RIP Glenn. Used to love playing and singing Peaceful Easy Feeling in the old band days - while a Bernie Leaden tune, Glenn sang most of the leads early on. This is a time when most of this Rock hard living is taking its toll.

Saw this earlier. Dude was a complete jerk but still had some killer material. Don Felder is easily the best guitar player ever in The Eagles and Frey and Henley treated him like garbage. I'm still really sad to hear he has died. I grew up absolutely obsessed with The Eagles and he was really a great songwriter.

Agree about Don Felder - he was the genius behind Hotel California (the song) and rejoined the group for the Hades Freezes Over tour (like that Rev?) and it was pure heaven hearing both he and Crazy Joe pluck out that tune so melodically. Glad I had the chance to see it/them live. Funny though it was their opening song when half the crowd was still getting stoned out in the parking lot and after they finished the song, Henley said -'That's so all you idiots don't keep yelling out "Play Hotel California" throughout the show'!

LOL! That's funny that Henley said that. He also is a totally pretentious jerk but can still say something funny and he also is a great songwriter. But Felder and Joe Walsh were definitely the shot in the arm that actually made the Eagles "rock". Not that they weren't a great band before them but they just didn't have the edge without those two. Felder's solos are always extremely melodic and his note selection was really great. If you watch The History of The Eagles you will see exactly how bitter it was between Frey and Felder. They literally almost fist fought ON STAGE. Joe Walsh basically says that he has just stayed quiet all these years because the band is such a dictatorship.

RIP Glenn. I'm constantly astounded at the number of guys dieing in their 50s and 60s and, somehow, Keith Richards is still around!

Yeah I saw a video of Keith Richards and Clapton playing with Chuck Berry in the late 80s. Keith looked so young. It must have been when he was in his early 90's or so.

Does "Weekend at Bernie's" ring a bell? I think that's the only explanation for KR - he's either a voodoo resurrected or androgynous!:zombie::guitarplayer:

Favorite band, Frey was awesome, both his work with the Eagles and solo projects were great. Him and Don Henley are among my favorite musicians.

Was so glad when they got back together, gave me a chance to see them in concert, twice, nothing glitzy, just fantastic music performed by incredibly talented musicians.

Rest in peace, Glenn Frey, you will be missed but the music you provided will live on forever.

Back in '84, we were in Cabo San Lucas for the season (along with dozens of other boats). Word got out that Keith Richards was coming down for his wedding. Mind you, this was before they really developed the Cape into the nightmare that it is now. Very few restaurants or bars. Well, one night, Keith and his fiance came into the local watering hole. It was probably 80 degrees out and he was dressed all in black including a long sleeved shirt. He looked like the walking dead back then. I can't imagine how he's still alive today.

I'm not a huge Eagles fan, but I can certainly appreciate them. Hotel California is an all-time classic song and Take it Easy is probably one of my favorite song to come out of the 70s. Even though the latter was originally a Jackson Browne song, it was Frey who finished it.

The second verse, written by Frey, may be the all-time greatest verse in any song ever.

Did you ever see the History of the Eagles? Think that was the documentary but anyway, Joe Brown lived downstairs from Frey and he told a really funny story about how he learned to write songs by listening to Joe Brown downstairs.

I don't recall that about Take it Easy but doesnt surprise me since they were friends.

A bit confused now - did Joe Jackson, Jackson Brown or Joe Brown (former GM of the Pgh Pirates) live downstairs from Glenn Frey? Or was it Santonio Brown? ;)

"It's a girl My Lord in a flatbed Ford slowing down to take a look at me"? That the one? Passed through Winslow AZ a few times - not a whole lotta action going on there - so his experience there might have deserved special attention in a song. :guitarplayer:

    Well, I'm a standing on a corner
    in Winslow, Arizona
and such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford
slowin' down to take a look at me

I mean, how fantastic is that?

Yup, that story comes from that documentary. Browne was having a tough time finishing the song, Frey took it from there. Even Browne was saying how wonderful the song was, in particular that second verse.

Its awesome but thats why they are my all time favorites.

Funny enough, my favorite song wasnt sung by either Frey or Henley but Randy Meisner, Take It to the Limit. Originally, anyway.

I saw that documentary. They really made Frey look like a complete jerk. I just really hate the way they treated Felder. I still really love the Eagles too though. Didn't you think that documentary cast him in a really poor light? I mean it all but says him and Henley are dictators. It also made Randy Meisner seem like a complete flake and Take it to the Limit is one of my favorite songs ever. I guess if I had a gun to my head I'd maaaaybe say that After The Thrill is Gone or Wasted Time would be my favorite song from them.

I didnt think so, I only saw it once though, would have to go back and watch it again. Frey and Henley made decisions that they felt gave the band the best chance of success. They had the best voices, it made no sense letting Feldman sing songs, if thats a dictatorship so be it but do you think Belichick is going to play an inferior TE over Gronk just to be fair? No, you do whats best for the team, and Frey who was a sports enthusiast, actually ran the Eagles like a sports team.

I also tend to think Felder was the jerk of the trio, anyone that says "Thank you...I guess" to the Governors wife whom they were doing the show for, is a jerk IMO. If I was Frey, I'd have wanted to kill him during that show as well.

They all have big egos though, Blount, dont kid yourself, my buddy is in the music business, he met a lot of big time players, knows some personally, said Joe Perry is completely nuts. Said Sammy Hagar is really cool though, total down to earth guy, so there are some exceptions.

I'd go with some of their earlier simple tunes with great harmonies - like Old 55, My Man (a tribute to Graham Parsons) and Southern Skies. The crowds at their concerts are a real mixed bag of extremes IMO - you have the early country folk hicks, the weirdo Joe Walsh crazies, the Don Henley solo tour urban/industrial freaks and then the just plain old middle of the road suburban soccer mom/dad Eagles rock fans. Lots of strange tension in the crowds at concerts of theirs that I attended which I never saw at most of the Prog Rock shows of other Bands I used to see all the time - Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Yes, Procol Harum, King Crimson, Jethro Tull.

Felder was a vastly superior player to them and that's more what I was talking about. They also pretty much forced Felder to go to that stupid rally and he really didn't want the band involved with all those bleeding heart liberal causes and just wanted to play music. They didn't really pay him very good compared to what they were making but you're right about the egos. Lars and James are the same way in Metallica. That's why Jason Newsted left and Kirk Hammett has basically just tried to keep his mouth shut for 30 years to survive. I'm sure that's what Joe and Timothy do in the Eagles as well.

    Vastly superior? No.

And doesnt hurt to do a little shmoozing Blount. Its not like the Ealges were like Bono.

And too bad if he didnt want to, Frey invited him to join the band, just do your job and shut up.
