I know it sounds retarded, but this may be a week to try to use both Jones and Ben. It isn't my favored approach and I would probably go with Ben if AB was playing considering the rapport they have with each other. But with Ben limited in practice I just wonder if there are some things Jones has been practicing with the current crop of receivers that may be a new twist that Ben has not had the chance to practice.

Also - if you start Jones and he stinks, but you are keeping it close it might give you a lift with Ben coming off the bench.

I get that QB rotation usually is not good for the QBs or the offense because it doesn't allow for a rhythm to be built, but these are different circumstances and the absence of AB really throws a wrench into things - so I am just wondering if something more unconventional might be worth trying. Either way I think the defense is going to have to play the game of the year.

Yep!! It really is risky to move too far away from your basic game plan at this point. You either believe in it, and your back-ups...or it never should have been the plan. But doing alot of flakey thing now....in the playoffs is just not smart.

The Cowboys did this back in the 70s with Craig Morton and Roger Staubach, as I recall. They started swapping them each game, and then each drive, and then on plays.

I know the main reason they dropped it was the QBs themselves complained. If I'm recalling correctly.

No. If Ben is healthy enough to play, you don't take him off the field for Landry Jones. Ever. That is ridiculous. Now lean forward and choke yourself - GSGT Hartman

I think it is flakey too, but if Ben can really only throw with some zip 10-20 yards downfield, the Broncos will then suffocate the short routes. Also I am not implying a straight on/off rotation- more some set plays that works based on the defensive formation they see.

Also Ben might be playing possum. I saw he sprained his shoulder in 08 and the next week he completed a 50 year pass downfield against Cleveland.

If we even consider such a thing I would go with Tyler Murphy we know that Denver is prepared for Ben and Jones what they would not be ready for is the Wildcat ....If Ben can't throw well deep then we could use that set on 3rd. and long and hope to confuse them or get more 1 on 1 coverage or maybe the QB could break a 15 or 20 yard run like Cam and Wilson do..

I think if Ben is healthy you want to keep him on the field as much as we can if it is cold there. Want him to stay warm with that injury.

Agree, but if you want to chuck it down the field and have DHB run underneath it, you might need Landry's arm. Not sure if you can do that if you just bring him in for one play. Might telegraph the situation.

The last time I remember that being done was when Reeves tried it with Tommy Maddox and Shawn Moore in Denver. It didn't work out very well.

Is Tyler Murphy still on the Steelers practice squad? The wildcat isn't effective anymore in the NFL.

The Steelers released Murphy when they promoted Doran Grant to the active roster.

If this were their approach I would probably turn the TV off at the beginning of the 2nd qtr just to save myself the aggravation.

I think you need to get rhythm.

This has nothing to do with my post above.

To me, rotating the QBs is much more likely if you have to start Jones. You may put together some package for Vick which works to his strengths IF and ONLY IF you find a weakness on tape that he can exploit. That being said, I don't think Ben is coming off the field.

2 Teams left are playing it,,for the most part.. Carolina and the Hawks ..All the Wildcat is
Yep the Panthers and the Hawks are running it..Wildcat is a Offense based on a running QB . The Zone Read is the #1 play .The Zone Read pass is based off of that .. So basically the 2 Teams are running a very close version to the Wildcat..

The wildcat was lining up a RB to receive the snap, two totally different offenses IMO.

Tyler Murphy is still on the practice squad roster. But finding some role for him to play in an emergency was an idea worth checking out.

But let's start thinking positive here now. The news Friday sounded very good.

From the Trib after Fridays full practice.

Tight end/fullback Will Johnson confirmed that among Roethlisberger's throws were “most of the route tree” and deep throws. [notice the deep]

“That was the plan coming in all week — for him to take it light during the early portions of the week and Friday try it a little bit,” Johnson said.

Coach Mike Tomlin told the team's official website he wanted to see Roethlisberger attempt “a variety” of “specific” throws.

“He did everything we asked him to do,” Tomlin said. [notice the everything]

But let's start thinking positive here now! [notice the positive]

In HS and in College they use this as the Zone Read Offense from the Single Wing or the Spread .You can block man and run power plays or zone block and read . Basically the Wildcat is just the running part of the playbook from the Spread and Wing formations .Teams with dual threat QB'S can run the entire offense from what is a Wildcat look such Teams are the Panthers, Jets, Bills,Seahawks,Eagles, I am sure a few more ...

Tyler Murphy ran the spread and multiple wing offenses in College and could run a version like the Teams above with both run and pass options ...
