    Ryan makes some good plays every once in a while- but I think we expected more out of him.
    I heard on the radio that he was taken out of the game the other day because he wasn't doing well. (Which makes me a angry because Blake is never taken out.) Anywho- I was wondering how he'd do as a Strong Safety- like Cam Chancellor. Obviously not for this season, but next season. Before yinz start telling how bad of an idea this is-

    Ryan Shazier::
    6'1", 229 lbs
    40 yard dash- 4.38

    Kam Chancellor::
    6'3", 232 lbs
    40 yard dash- 4.69

    If they tried it and he was actually good at it, we wouldn't have to worry about that position & we could focus on corners. If he was back there, we may not get so beat up by these tight ends like we did this season.
    Ok, I'm ready.... What do yinz think?

    Not knowing either player's position history, just assuming they have been
    a lb and a ss most of there football career's I think it would be very hard
    to train Shazier in coverage skills needed. Only my opinion for what it is worth?

    This was a hot topic back in training camp. I believe the question of switching Shazier to Safety was brought up by the media to either Butler or Lake and it was shot down.

    This defense has a history of taking a couple years to learn.
    Shazier has shown some flashes. We want these guys on the field as rookies. We have to deal with growing pains.

    On Blake. Boykin played 75% of the defensive snaps against Cleveland.

    Give him some more time. Timmons didn't exactly come in his first two seasons and tear it up. Most thought Woodley was the better draft pick at the time, and you can all see who is still around here.

    I'm just glad he is staying healthy. I see some INT's coming and forced fumbles coming in his future.

    He will stay put. Seems he needs a bit more beef. The jury is still out as far as i'm concerned. Hasn't lived up to the 1st round billing yet.
    I am concerned about Timmons. 29, 9years in, next year is going to cost 8.7 mill straight up cap hit. I believe they will extend him but not breaking the bank to lessen the hit. Solid player but has not shined to bright this year.

    I was wondering why Spence was in the game.....

    I like Shazier. He is way ahead of where a lot of new LB's are. I think with time, he will be very good - if he can stay healthy.

    Yes, sound good to me. I thought this is what they were gonna do with Spence before he got hurt

    This is it in a nutshell.

    I like the idea of position flexibility, and having Shazier drop back into deeper coverage may not be a bad thing - he can cover a lot of distance quickly, and often our defense has been exposed when a safety has been up at the line and not got back in time. But I would still leave Shazier as an MLB.

    That's a good point. Just because he is listed as a LB, doesn't mean he can't do some of the things a safety can do from an assignment standpoint. It's in his wheelhouse.

    Shazier is bigger than that now and is the one staying on the field in sub packages with Timmons coming off. It takes most ILBers 3 years to really get going and get a real feel of the NFL. Timmons didn't really even see the field much until year 3. Shazier will be a stud in this league.

    I mentioned shazier at safety early in the season, Arians has his 1st round draft pick safety, Buchannon playing at linebacker this year and he is really productive, Shazier could be better suited to be a fly around guy with his speed at free safety though in my opinion.....

    how about we leave shazier at lb and draft a good safety? i hope the will allen experiment is over. golden can take his role as the 3rd safety now but i'd draft one and pick one up as a FA for next year. :cool:

    If they were gonna try Shazier at SS, they would have done it by now. Like any young player he lacks consistency. Some of that could be attributed to the fact that he's been relatively injured in his first two seasons. It's not like he doesn't have it in him.... He's had some really good games for us, he just needs to be able to perform that way more consistently.

    Not a terrible idea but he really needs to just focus and work hard, watch film and get to understand his role on this defense. He is quick as a cat but sometimes makes mental errors. I truly believe this would be a thing of the past in the very near future. He has the athleticism he just needs to match that with his ability to understand what his role is on this team. Besides we have Shamarko.. hehehe

    Glenn I saw a snap breakdown yesterday and inexplicably now Blake is taking Cockrell's snaps. Cockrell had only 36 snaps. So they must be really high on Blake.

    Id first try to bulk Shazier up and try him as a OLB before Safety.

    Watching Shazier drop into his zones he looks like a natural zone coverage LB . When passes are thrown in front of him he doesn't read and react fast enough, he is better in recovery .. So my take is no I don't think he can play SS .

    What needs to be done is go to more 4 man fronts and have bigger DL help keep him clean .Shazier plays like Sean Lee of the Cowboys and Luke Kuechly of the Panthers...Both of them are similar in size 6-2 and 236 lbs. and 6-3 and 235 lbs. respectively..Both of those guys are great as LB'S and Shazier could be as well...The difference is the scheme. One could argue that Shazier could be better than those 2 because he is faster than both of them at basically the same size...

    The bottom line is a speed LB needs coverage from the DL so he can read and react and avoid the big blockers, Shazier is playing well for a speed LB being asked to play like a stuff and fit LB . He will never be great in such a role ...

    We could put him on the d-line at his current size and he'd already be better than Cam Thomas

    Not to change the subject, but shouldn't the same patience be given to Bryant. There seems to be a group of people who want to put him on a train out of town. Give him time, let him play through mistakes. Hopefully he and the team come out the other end better for having done so.

    Troy a couple of years ago played a substantial amount at LB. If it works one way....
