I watch the draft but I don't watch much college football. I don't understand it like I do the NFL- never took the time to. Also, there's just too many teams!
Ben is getting older & I don't know how much longer we'll have him (I wish he'd play for about 10-20 more years, but I don't think that's going to happen.)
My question is this:: when do we try to get a QB to replace Ben when he does retire? This offseason obviously isn't the time. I think we need to focus on the defense (mainly the secondary) in the draft. But should we wait until Ben retires? Or get one a QB while Ben is still here so he can learn from Ben? Is there a sophomore/junior QB in college now that looks like they'd be a good fit?
    What do yinz think?

I think we draft Ben's replacement in three years.

the only qb I would even give the time of day to in this draft is cardale jones.. and only if he somehow fell to the 4th rd.

I think we can safely spend a late round pick on our 3rd QB, as Landry should be our #2. But to reasonably draft Ben's replacement that would cost a 1st and we aren't in that position yet.

As for timing, I think we wait until Ben calls it quits to make an aggressive move to get a QB we like, unless an Aaron Rodgers situation presents itself in 2-3 years. I don't have any names of college QB's right now who would be targeted in the 2018/19 drafts.

Nope! Favorite NFL team: The Cleveland Browns.

Seriously though, he looks like someone to keep an eye on, TarHeel notwithstanding.

Bens replacement probably isnt playing college ball yet.

It will likely take a 1st rd pick and that probably wont happen for at least 4 more years.

getting a guy about 3-4 years out is the best plan, groom him like greenbay did with AR...

I don't think they will find Ben's replacement for another 2-3 years.

Rodgers was a 1st rd pick, don't see the Steelers doing that any time soon. If they are going to try that, they'll need to find a diamond in the rough in the later rounds like NE did with Brady. No easy feat.

I don't think Ben is even close to done. Could easily play until he's 38-40. If he keeps his arm strength, and keeps getting the ball out quickly he can play for a long time. If we must, then I think that kid from UCLA could be worth it in a couple years. It's hard to tell though. I wouldn't expect a high pick on a QB until 2019.

Again, only watch OU games but damn that Baker Mayfield has Big Ben written all over him. He's impressed much more than Sam Bradford or Landry Jones while they were at OU.

You want to draft a QB that has thrown 15 TDs in his college career?

    Don't believe the hype.

I just watched some tape of Mayfield. I like his style. He has good awareness and good accuracy and he is a playmaker so I get the Ben comparison. He is fast too.

Mayfield could be an NFL QB eventually.

I like Jared Goff but he needs to eat something. Goff has good pocket awareness, nice accuracy and can make all the throws. I think he could be an NFL QB too.

Even if a guy like one of those 2 falls it is not in the Steelers interest to sign them. Ben still has 3-4 years left at a minimum

    Sign a veteran QB.

This was a good thread Steelgirl because Vick and Gradkowski are both gone after this year.

I hear Brian Hoyer might be available haha.

Steelers probably retain Vick as the backup is my guess. I think that is a good decision. He has a lot of experience as a starter and still has a strong arm. His accuracy on short passes is garbage though.

I know that's an unpopular opinion.
