I did not know that. I would have thought the coaches would...

As a coach I don't have a problem with being aggressive. The issue seems to be no reason as to when and why. Tomlin relies on his gut. Gut coaching is obviously not a science and can come back to bite you. My frustration has more to do with the overall gameplan instead of the in-game strategy. How do you let a guy who has only been in a system 12 calendar days to come out and carve you up? How do you let a WR corp with guys I have never heard of outplay the Steeler WR's. How do you let a defense in which you can only name one or two starters stop a team that has been scoring points on anyone? That is my frustration. As a coach you can live with getting beat, but when you are more talented and beat yourself that is in part due to bad coaching. Either during the game or during the planning phase. Yesterday seems to be a trend too often with Tomlin at the help. Playing down to our competition.

I loved the call to go for it , but hated how they did it . The reason they did go for it was to set the tone and to impose their will ,it back fired of course because we got to cute...A couple of variables to look at on that play . The first being the crowd noise and playing on the road . The next variable being all the success that DW had had prior to that play ...When you look at those it should be obvious that you need a silent count to negate the crowd noise. It is also obvious they are going to key on DW . When I put those 2 together the only play is quick snap on a silent count with DW running the same way he did to pull the LB'S that are keying on him and Ben just taking that snap and diving off the left side ...

If you watch that play as soon as DW slants to the right the entire D slants that way there was no chance they could have stopped the sneak non at all . Not sure why Haley didn't have his Good OC hat on , but it was a very poor play call ...

I would of taken the field goal to get the lead. However you are absolutely right the play call and design was even worse. We don't have a Faneca or a big back like Betis to get the 1 yard and what's worse DW was going sideways. I didn't yell at the TV when he didn't go for the field goal, and just thought Tomlin was going with his gut feeling again. But I screamed when I saw the formation as did their defense. They knew what was coming as did I. Just another of many bad play calls this game.

To me as coach you got to have a feel during the game (not gut feeling) but what you see and how the game is developing especially when your QB is struggling, you then got to give him plays to help him. This was totally absent from the coaching staff against the Ravens.

Just wondering sometimes if Ben could use QB coach like he did in the past. Heck even Rodgers at GreenBay has one.

Naw, Tomlin doesnt learn anything from losses, remember he does everything from his gut, he is mister macho man who knows all and he is the teacher not the student............

Yep and Haley needs some scripted plays as well .One of the things I hated the most was play progression . DW ran very well , but I didn't see 1 play action pass off of those same run formations ? Also if Haley had a script he could see what plays work best against that Cover 2 shell , he should have known , but he didn't ... To me it was evident what needed to be done ...Go 4 WR single RB set and spread that D thin and throw the Quick slant . I will watch the tape again , but the only time I remember was the one to DHB and it was the easiest pitch and catch of the game ...

Agree, I was getting texts from some friends and relatives during the game. After we were successful running up the middle in the 1st quarter the texts were: please play action on 1st down and throw down the middle on short and medium passes. We never did the whole game.

I disagree with going for it on 4th to "impose your will" for two reasons:

    1. If you are going to impose your will you do that on both sides of the ball for 60 minutes. You shouldn't call plays based on anything other that what is coldly beneficial to a favorable outcone.

    2. If there is any team that doesn't know what "impose your will" means it is Tomlin's Steelers. The power running game has been non-existent resulting in calls like an empty backfield on 1st and goal from the 1.

(Also if it backfires it does give the other team an early boost).

Yeah there is very little play action now. Remember Ben's numbers on play actions early in his career? They were ridiculously good. Ben takes time for plays to develop anyways might as well include PA once in a while.
