    Article:

...Just like Jeff Reed, Chris Boswell is off to a phenomenal start in his career. On the season, Boswell has made 92.9% of his kicks, hitting on 26 of his 28 attempts. His only two misses have come from 40-49 yards, but he has been a perfect 2 for 2 from 50 yards and beyond. In his last game, Chris set a new franchise record for rookies with his 26th field goal, breaking Kris Brown’s former record of 25. The guy he is replacing, Shaun Suisham, is no slouch either. Suisham, who had failed in Dallas and with Washington because he was too inconsistent, seemed to find his groove in the NFL’s toughest venue for kickers...

Suisham coming off a surgical injury and rehab, wont be any competition for Boswell in camp next year, it's Boswells job to lose and I don't see him losing it to a rusty kicker......

Boswell needs more chances from 50 plus to get a better feel for him. so far so good though. If Tomlin trusted him more at the beginning he'd have a few more chances from 50 plus.

I like Boswell on kick offs better too...sometimes he angles it to the side and not much of a chance for a run back.

It will depend on how Boswell finishes the season. If he keeps kicking well then does his think in the playoffs, I'd be really surprised if he isn't the guy next year.

They are very similar kickers tho. They are both money on the short/mid range kicks. Boswell seems to have a bigger leg on FG attempts, but is poor at turning kick offs into touchbacks (Suisham isn't much better). As long as Boswell continues what he is doing, you gotta go with the cheaper option IMO.

I will wait until the season concludes before I have a final opinion. Perhaps this year Boswell will have the opportunity to tie or win a playoff game as the clock expires. How will he handle that kind of pressure?

Just imagine it - 4 ticks left; Steelers and Panthers tied at 27.... Boswell lines up for a game winning attempt at 48 yards. Here's the snap... the kick is up.... and it's (to be continued )

    IN SAN FRANCISCO??
I swear if we go for a fg at that time of game from that distance in that stadium with that weather
I will jump way off the Tomlin support mobile while it is going over the goldengate.

knowing we had a timeout to use anyway previously and obviously would have had two left if it wasn't for some silly challenge earlier,
Plus the only reason we are sitting at 27 is because sometime earlier he made us go for two and.....

God I hope Boswell makes it

I like Suisham, but I feel much more confident lining up Boswell for anything 40+. I always had to look away when Suisham would get ready to kick a 40+.

For some reason I have a feeling that Boz will win us a game in the playoffs, thinking something around 50 yards. I believe the kid is a winner and has the football gods with him...Just like Ben. Let's hope I'm right...Go Steelers!!!

Lets see how it plays out? Competition is always good. Lets see
how Boz kicks under pressure when it counts.

Boswell is set to make 525k next year
Suisham will make 2.4 m next year

So it seems a given you'd take Boswell
BUT and I'm not real sure how all this works if we r going to owe Suisham all this money anyway maybe we should keep him and waive Boswell and save the 500 k

I would keep Boswell who's younger and seems to have his head on straight. Suisham was very good and I liked him. But if we get rid of Boswell, you might as well kiss him goodbye. He'll get snatched in a heartbeat. The Boz could be our guy for a long time.

A shame for Suisham that he could lose his job based on his commitment to a tackle.

But there you go. I suspect we keep Boswell; I suspect he has a sophomore slump and people call for his head; I suspect he pulls himself out of that and turns into a good, solid kicker for us for at least a few seasons.

I expect Suisham will be brought back to compete next year if for no other reason than courtesy. Let the best man win, which I expect will be Boswell. Then Suisham has a chance to sign with another team if he shows anything.

Unless Boswell totally chokes in the post season (assuming we're there) and forgets how to kick in the off-season, the job is his. Tomlin wouldn't even attempt a 50+ yard FG with Suisham at Heinz but he's got a kicker now who can put it through the uprights at 60 and is as accurate as Suisham. This isn't even up for debate at this point, IMHO.

Here is the deal as far as salary goes, Suisham is set to make 2.4 base plus 1.1 prorated coming to a cap hit of 3.5 mil. If we cut him he will cost us 3.3mil and only saves us 194k. Now we bring him to camp and do a post June 1st cut and he will only cost us 1.1mil spread out over the next 2 years with a cap savings of 2.4 mil! This does 2 things, #1 saves our salary cap & #2 give Sushi a chance to prove himself for another team.

To me here is the thinking:

*We are always looking for cap help.
*Sushi has had problems with kickoffs anyways.
*The way I see it both are good kickers so we can't go wrong with either.
