I don't buy the "aging" excuse. Yes - the core (LBs, DL) has aged, but our secondary has been really crappy since about 2003 - and NOTHING has been done (substantially) to fix the problem. Scheme? Nope. Players? Hardly.

We saw flashes of what could be, even with just average players, in Sunday's win when we changed our scheme.

So the aging thing? Nah. I hang our lack of ability to change squarely on MT. When he makes changes to fix the problems, and we start being a force in the playoffs instead of a one-and-done team (if we make it) then I'll give him a break. I think the "what have you done for me lately?" cliché fits here.

I was ok with Tomlin celebrating to the camera....I just don't get a thread like this. Where is this coming from? We just won a HUGE game! Cant we just focus on that? When we suck of course Tomlin is going to take some heat. It's a message board. It allows fans to vent and celebrate.

At least we got rid of Bruce Arians, and he's proven what a bad coach he is.

Not really, Cowher had a career playoff record of 12-9, a respectable .571 winning percentage against good to great teams in the post season. That is close to somewhere going 9-7 or 10-6 each year against stiff competition. He certainly isn't at the Chuck Noll, Bill Belichick, or Tom Landry level. But he actually has a similar or better winning percentage than some other well known coaches including about being equal with Bill Parcells, and better than Andy Reid, Mike Holmgren, and Tony Dungy. Parcells is in the HOF and people seem to want to annoint Tony Dungy yet no-one barely speaks a word of Cowher who won for years without a franchise QB (although that was partly his fault).

    Great post.

I have always felt Tomlin is a good coach in being a guy who relates the players well and he seems to be a guy who is fairly loose - butt doesn't clench up the way Cowher's did. I always thought that was important to a team of talented vets when he took over and he deserves some kudos for that SB victory. Where I don't think he is good is the details of the game, going with gut feels as opposed to having a measure of what the odds are, i.e what is a measured risk vs. an outlandish one. It is that area where I wish he would rely on others (i.e. get a good clock manager on the sideline, get someone watching the details like when Seattle obviously knew it was going to be a fake FG and call time-out).

One thing is for sure, they looked great when they started pressing more in the 2nd half of the broncos game. That should be done from now on.

Smh talking about Cowher's playoff record being mediocre.

Tomlin was 5-1 in the playoffs from 2008+2010.

Tomlin's record in his other six seasons is 0-3.

So, I'll be clear. I think that the arrow is pointing up. I believe that we will make the playoffs, and I've been saying for months that we will win the rematch in Foxboro. If the things that I think will happen actually do happen, then I will certainly be feeling good about Tomlin - gaffes and all. However, none of those things have happened yet. We're in a must win situation heading to Baltimore, and if the Jets upset the Patsies we will be in a must win situation in Cleveland. Those are both very bad teams, and despite the rivalry effect we should win both games with little or no 4th quarter drama. If we stumble against either and fall out of the playoffs, then I think we have to question whether Tomlin's coaching can pave the way to #7. I feel the same way about the 1st round of the playoffs. There's nobody that we can realistically play in round 1 of the playoffs that can beat us unless we beat ourselves. We need to, at minimum, win our 1st playoff game since 2010 this season. The defense isn't very good, but it's plenty good enough to complement our offense and help us beat anyone if we don't self destruct.

Coaching is first and foremost about results. I expect to see them this year. At bare minimum a playoff win and a tough, close loss in the 2nd round. With the Pats being more vulnerable on defense than they were last year, and Peyton's age catching up to him in a hurry, the door is wide open. Our coach needs to get this team through that door. I think he can, but I don't know he can - yet.

If scobee doesnt miss 4 field goals we're not in this position. That doesn't have jack to do with coaching. In a similar vein if we didn't lose Ben for 4 games and Bryant for that matter we're in n entirelt different position. Those two things don't have anything to do with coaching either. Let me guess when Ben throws 2-3 interceptions in a game and we lose you blame Tomlin? Ben's boneheaded interception last week should have cost us the game and probably would have with peyton,Brady,Luck Breeze... behind center. That is soley our 100million dollar franchise qb.

That has nothing to do with losing to Baltimore at home last season.

Steelers will make the playoffs but what will they do when they get there?

I would say two interceptions and two fumbles certainly had a big fat pile to do with losing. Anyone care to look up how many teams win games when they turn the ball over 3 times? What about 4?Maybe it's just me, but when your franchise qb throws two interceptions that's not coaches fault. Or when your 10 year vet te loses a fumble I blame the te as opposed to the coach. Do you blame Tomlin for Bell missing the game due to his bum knee as well?

The must win is because of multiple injuries, in particular Ben being gone for 4 games

NO no no. Apparently winter has had an affect on our mental capacity. Losing your franchise qb has zero affect on the outcome of games. If we lose it's because Tomlin sucks plain and simple.

Ben missed 0 games in 2013 and 2014 which is councidentally the same number of playoff wins Tomlin has since 2010.

    Excuses for days.

Sigh... I'm out of these Tomlin threads for good. There are some people who just hate the guy no matter what, and others who will come up with every excuse imaginable to absolve him of any accountability. I am in a reasonable point in between and end up having to debate both camps.

People who hate Mike Tomlin are like 2 dollar bills -- it's mildly surprising when you see one. I don't even know how they exist.

Well part of it is in two of those losses he went up against outright better teams. The Patriots simply were a better team than PGH when they played them back in 05 and Denver was better too back in 97. Keep in mind that Denver team had gone 14-2 the year before and had their own fluke loss to Jacksonville in Denver.

The San Diego loss was awful and the first NE loss was really bad too, though there were a lot of freak-ish things that happened in that game where you thought the Steelers were kind of snake-bit.

No we don't blame Tomlin for injuries, and yes the interception thrown by Ben was absolutely Ben's fault. But Tomlin deserves plenty of criticism for the way he manages the clock, the way he is stubborn with sticking with certain players and not giving others a shot, and is at least partially responsible for a defense which hasn't gotten a lot better since the glory days - though I put more of that blame on Colbert.

Wow would I love to see the Steelers get to an AFC Championship game about now!!!

You either win the Super bowl or you don't but getting to the AFC Championship beats a wild card exit at home any day.

So... Ben is losing games by turning the ball over... And Tomlin's response is to have Ben throw it 50 times a game and abandon the run game despite having the best ypc in the NFL... And still Tomlin gets no blame?

You're like Tomlin. Your favorites can do no wrong.

During a night game (I forget when), they interviewed Harrison. They asked about Cowher & James got emotional & said he missed him. They asked about Tomlin & James said something like Tomlin's like one of them. A team needs a leader- not another friend.
I gave him a chance when he first came here. After a while, I just didn't like him & I still don't. It's not just about the playoffs either. I'd appreciate him if he'd win another Super Bowl but that won't erase the stupid decisions he's made (on & off the field) that cost us games we should've won. I don't like that he brought Vick here & I don't like how smug he acts either.
It is like beating a dead horse. But as long as Tomln is our HC,
there will a lot more of this going on. There will be nothing left of the horse!!
