That game didn't matter. If jets lost and we lost any of the last 3 and both go 10-6 they are in. We win out we are in. If we lose to Broncos and jets lost to pats we get in

Yes, it did matter.. A loss to the Cowboys, and to the Patriots next week would have given the Steelers the ability to lose one more game and still get in. Now, unless the Jets lose to both the Patriots and Bills, we have absolutely no room for error. The Chiefs sure as hell aren't going to drop 2 of their next 3, because that would be the only other scenario for the Steelers to finish 2-1 in their final 3, and still get in.

No the game was meaningless. If the Jets lost tonight and won their next two and the Steelers would still have to win out to make the playoffs. Since it wasn't an AFC game, the game didn't matter to the Steelers. If the Jets lose either of the next 2 and the Steelers win any 2, the Steelers are the 6 seed. Tonight didn't change that.

The Steelers do have the tie breaker over the Jets if they both finish 11-5 or 10-6 because that would mean they have the same conference record and the Steelers have a better win % of common opponents.

KC holds the tie breaker over the Steelers because they won head to head.

If the Jets win out and the Steelers lose a game the Jets get in.

That is why the NYJ vs Dallas game mattered- because the Jets likely need to get past the Steelers on overall record.

Lol, no. Prior to the Jets-Cowboys game, if the Jets would lose two of their final three games, and the Steelers lose one of their final three games, we would get in. Considering the Jets face New England next week, there was a strong possibility of this happening. The Jets face Buffalo in the final week of the season, which I don't see them losing. That means, the Steelers have to almost certainly win out to get in. Further, the Steelers could have clinched the 6th seed next week if the Jets had lost to Dallas, lose next week vs New England, and us win vs the Broncos and Ravens. So, again, the Cowboys ****ing up tonight screwed us over, no matter how much you don't want to believe it.

It's probably been said already, but maybe not 100% clear in this thread. Next week's Jet game vs. New England is the key game for tie breaking purposes, along with our game Week 17 vs. Cleveland (record vs common opponents). If the Pats beat the Jets, and we beat the Browns, then we can lose to either Denver or Baltimore and still get in. However, it would have been nice to get a Dallas win last night. Had that happened, there would have been a good chance of us being able to clinch before Week 17 with 2 wins + a Pats win vs. the Jets. Now, it seems pretty much certain that Week 17 matters to us.

Scenarios. The bottom line looking tunnel vision is THIS is a must win. Going against a major playoff Defense. They lost against another major playoff Defense, the Chiefs. Have to make a statement against a playoff team, might see them again. Time to run the table and have no doubt.

JPP is right... if the Jets lost to the Cowboys and won the last two, we would still have to win all 3 to get in. Your clinching scenario is wrong. If we win the next two and the Jets lose to the Pats, we clinch regardless. Had they lost to Dallas and beat NE, we don't clinch with two wins. We didn't need the Cowboys loss to clinch.

With a win vs Denver we would have the same overall record and AFC record as the Jets. Had they lost to the boys, we would still have the same AFC record as them and a better overall record. If we lose any of our remaining games in that scenario, we tie their overall but lose the tie breaker due to a worse AFC record should the jets win the last two.

Think of it this way. Entering last night the deciding factor for the playoffs wass remaining AFC games. We have 3, they have 2. If both teams lose the same number of these games, the steelers are in. If the Steelers lose more than the jets, we miss the playoffs. The Cowboys game only made a difference whether or not we get in via overall record or tiebreaker.

Either way, let's just win today so we control our own destiny with only the Ravens and Browns to go. I'd prefer to not need help down the stretch, even if that help is the Pats.

Week 17 isn't a make or break. If the Steelers win today and next week at Baltimore and NE beat the Jets, the Steelers will clinch a playoff spot. The Steelers will have the common opponents tiebreaker even if the lose to Cleveland.

Common Opponents (Cleveland, Indy, Raiders, NE). Even if the Steelers lose to Cleveland, they'd have a 3-2 record in those games. If the Jets lose to NE, they'd have a 2-3 record in those games.

The Steelers are in good shape. They will be favored in all 3 games and the Jets will be underdogs in at least one of their last two. If the Steelers don't make it, it's because they will have choked, not because of anything the Jets did or didn't do.

IMO if the Steelers don't win out i don't think they deserve a spot ..
If they can't beat a playoff team at home today with a rookie QB who never faced them yet and 2 divisional teams that are DOA which they know like the back of their hands ,,what makes us think they will go deep into the playoffs anyway ..They may not Need to win out but they "should" ,no if ,ands ,buts about it !!
Go in on a high,,not through the back door because it wasn't slammed shut on us !

First, the Cowboys suck. Really suck.

2nd, remember when must win actually meant must win? I became desensitized to the phrase around week 4. :poopy:

Jets were not impressive. Going on a limb here- and a pretty strong thick limb though- and say that the Jets just won their last game of this season.

if the chiefs and steelers lose today that puts us out with two to go because that would move the jets to 5th and the chiefs to 6th. we need the chiefs and jets to lose and we better take care of business. i could see the pats laying down against the jets by next week. all of ours really are must wins at this point. they better do it today.

Jets Shmets. As has been said numerous times, our scenarios didn't change one iota as a result of the Jets beating Dallas (a very bad NFC team). On the other hand, beating Denver gives us one more route to #5 if KC keeps winning and maybe more if the earth swallows up the Bengals. Although wishing that we beat the same Ravens team on the road that had to turn around the next week and go win at Cincy the following week will require more than Santa Claus. We will need the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy and everyone else from that Tim Allen movie....

    But while we're dreaming.....

We beat Denver and Cincy beats Denver in week 16....NE 1, Cincy 2, KC 3, AFCS 4, Pitt 5, Denver 6. Manning comes back for one more glorious playoff run, knocks off KC and NE, we handily beat whoever from AFCS and once again deny Cincy a playoff win before hosting the AFC championship game. I know there's a logical conclusion to this dream, but I already fear my stocking isn't big enough.....

We are in if we beat Ravens and Browns and we lose to Donkeys and Jets lose to NE.

Not a must win, but a chance to show everybody how serious a threat we are.

Ahhh ok, I was off by 1 game in my Jets common opponent record. Their loss to Oakland is looming really big. Agree that we will be in if we don't choke. However, we have this tendency to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory through stupidity (see Ravens game and first Bengals game, and I think to an extent the Seattle game as well). That's my concern - dumb decision making.

Here's the thing - if we lose today, it means that Denver won... Which means that the Pats will be very focused on beating the Jets to maintain serve for home field.

I'm sorry but is there a game that teams don't care about winning? I would think most professional sports teams go into a game thinking they must win otherwise why play. Of course in your constant effort to add to your amazing post total and threads that all say the same thing over and over and over snooze snozzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz where was I oh yeah didn't you declare the season over like 8 weeks ago? Shouldn't you be on vacation planning next year's must win threads
