Is Ben throwing down field way too much or not? He seems not to get the Brady calls. Just my opinion

I'd prefer on 3rd and short to pick up the first down....as long as the deep ball is not forced I'm okay with it...but first keep the drive going on third and short.

Yes, he is. It worked this week and it may very well work next week. That deep ball stuff won't work every week though. It's a low percentage play. We need to focus on getting 1st downs by running the ball and our short passing game, not going 40 yards down field on 3rd and short. That's going to bite us in the ass one of these weeks, I guarantee it.

New Orleans used to be the best deep ball team in the league, yet they couldn't win a SB with that kind of playcalling. It took top notch defence for them to win a SB. Without their great defence, they were just a regular season wonder who couldn't get it done in the playoffs, if they could even get there.

I think it feels like a bit too much as well. It feels a bit like a return to Arians ball.

Yes, we throw deep too much, especially on 3rd down. I like taking shots on 1st and 2nd downs, especially to Bryant and Brown. However we just do it too much, and end too many drives with missed bombs on 3rd and 3. I can see occasionally going deep on a 3rd down to keep the defense honest, but not nearly as often as Ben does it.

Probably because we've been abysmal on 3rd down. It seems that it's all or nothing with Haley. For the past couple seasons it was dink dunk dink dunk with the occasional shot down field. This year it's bombs away. Don't get me wrong I'm all for the big play;however, they're low percentage plays. It seems we are pressing more now and using fewer check downs. As it stands we're converting 3rd downs at a rate of 37%

My only problem is when we need 3-4 yards he wants to bomb it for 40 yards on 3rd down.
Sometimes it's a big play, but most times it leads to a punt.

No problem with it at all, it is who he is. I think having Le'Veon out, even with Williams' fine play, takes away a huge component of our short passing game which is why you see Ben chucking the ball down the field even more than he usually does. And a big reason why our 3rd down conversion rate may be where it is.

We have a thoroughbred at QB; let's not try to make him into a draft horse.

Unlike the offense when BA was OC, we are scoring TDs now. Our RZ efficiency has improved significantly and our success on 2 point conversions is indicative of that. I do get aggravated though when we have 3rd and short and it's bombs away.

    This.

And I'll add that with the deep threats we have it would be foolish not to throw it down the field 5 times a game. Whats too much in peoples opinion?

The only part I agree with is the 3rd and short. I know you are trying to catch them sleeping but I'd prefer to pick up the first down.

We just had 4 games in a row scoring 30 or more points, 3 of them 35 and over, doesn't seem to be hurting them.

The real question to ask in order to answer the OP - has it cost us any games this season? Not that I recall. Now bad coaching decisions on the other hand...

With three deep ball threats like Wheaton, Bryant and AB, only a moron wouldnt chuck the ball deep, make a big play with chunk yardage or get a PI and those deep ball plays took the colts secondary out of their game last night and opened up the run game, bryant had 114 yards on 4 receptions, thats production. The colts by no means is an elite team, but we will see how our deep ball game works against the bungles, since they cant double all 3 in the triple threat, we was too conservative the last time we played these clowns, so lets open it up on them this time, we have nothing to lose....

Totally agree with you on this. It's not like he is throwing alot of interceptions when he is throwing up there. It may be a low percentage play but when it hits nobody can argue with the kinds of yards Ben is putting up.

Dont forget we dont have Bell. He provides the short passing game. No problem at all with Bens deep ball throws. We have the players to do this and it works really well. I do not have the figures in front of me but we both know Ben is putting up huge yardage this year.

Offense is throwing too much period. Need more balance.

The OL opened some huge holes for Deangelo last night.

I think they used them fairly strategically this week. The offense has looked bad this season whenever it's been one dimensional - so as long as teams are afraid of the deep ball, use that to our advantage.

Anyone think last night might be the beginning of unleashing hell that Tomlin promised last December?

I am on the opposite end here. I think we are throwing about as much as we should.

We really struggled to run early on and only started to get it going when the passing game softened the defense up. I kinda like throwing the ball all over the place in the first half, then ramming it down their throats in the second half when we're up. Seemed to work pretty well last night.

I care about wins, not individual stats. Bell is out, but Williams has proven himself to be quite capable as a receiver out of the backfield and should be utilized more imo. If we were focusing on sustaining drives instead of always looking for the big play we would probably be in better shape then 7-5. Look at last week vs Seattle. There were several occasions where haley/ben opted for the bomb as opposed to moving the chains and it bit us in the ass.

I agree.. The long throws have us winning. I do not understand why people ***** about winning games when Ben airs it out. OMG.. We would be in better shape if we sustained less injuries and Ben play all of the games to date.. Bell being out has hurt us as well. And having a crap secondary for the games we lost made a difference.

You don't seem to understand. We're 7-5, not 12-0. The bombs while exciting are low percentage plays and are frequently drive killers. I would rather our offense march down the field methodically, keeping the defense off the field than throwing a 40 yard pass on 3rd and 5. We threw deep to Bryant 5 times last night, but he only caught one(20%). With a similar percentage last week. Keep our offense on the field with high percentage plays or take shots with low percentage plays and allow the likes of Wilson to torch us with 5 tds? It makes far more sense to throw a pass that you complete 60-70% of the time. Doing so shortens the game, wears the opposing defense out, and keeps our defense(our weakest link) off the field.
