For the sake of accountability a change has to be made for Blake. That kind of play, or maybe even lack of effort, can't be tolerated.

I voted for bench both Allen and Blake for Golden and Boykin (or someone else other than Blake).

So he can join Ben and Shazier in the NFL's concussion protocol program. Based on some of his coaching decisions recently, I'd swear he has major concussion issues!

Cut Golden and Boykin now. Assuming the coaching staff is putting the best players on the field, and that indicates they are worse than Allen and Blake, who are horrible, then they must be worse than horrible. Grumble, grumble, grumble.

Okay, okay. I want to hear from the two that voted for the status quo. How can anyone justify no changes for a secondary that's almost dead last in the league and is getting torched week after week by the likes of Johnny Manziel???

I voted for the obvious in trying Boykin and Golden. The coaching staff is doing a disservice to the team with their stubbornness. MT loves Blake and Allen and he needs to put that aside and mix in some other talent.

I saw in one of the other threads today that Tomlin actually sang Boykins praise but that Gay is doing a solid job. So my question is, why did you throw away a draft pick for a guy that can only play the slot when you already have a good slot player in place

I voted other of course ...I would bench Blake for Boykin. I would put Grant in for Gay ....Move Gay back to SS and Bench Mike ...Then I would bench Allen and try DHB at FS ....

As stated in the other thread at least then we would have more speed on the field if nothing else...

Again did you not see the CB that played Odell the other day . He played WR at College and is now playing very well as a CB .....I am not sure why it's so hard for guys to grasp. WR'S and DB'S are basically the same thing..Esp. in today's NFL. Seattle has converted WR'S playing DB...I am sure there are more..

With the way the NFL is going and the passing trend with many Teams running more 4 and 5 WR sets , we better start figuring out how to convert WR'S to DB'S . This is going to be the future ...

What is the main job of a FS ?Here is a basic look..http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/the-positions-in-a-football-secondary.html

Now when you look at that why would you think DHB could not play that position? He has the tools and the skills needed we just don't have a Coach willing to try it they keep trotting out the same slow bad playing guys and expecting different results...

The last three games secondary observations, just my thoughts:

    1. Blake - Cannot cover well, leaves too much space between him and receiver, is lost sometimes, and does not tackle well.

    2. Cockerel - Okay in coverage, better than Blake, but does not tackle well, almost as bad as Blake.

    3. Gay. - Best of the bunch, if the past is any indication, he is much better in the slot than the outside.

    4. Allen. - Slow, old, out of position sometimes, not a ball hawk, but smarter due to his experience.

    5. Mitchell. - Best hitter of the bunch, but does not like to wrap up in tackling, and sometimes still takes bad angles. Is not a ball hawk, and seems like he is never in position to help the corners over the top end. Has improved from last year. Would be okay and serviceable if he had ball hawk type safety besides him, but he doesn't.

I would replace Blake this week with Boykin or move Gay there and Boykin in his place. Give Cockerel a lecture on tackling and tell him he got one more chance. Bench Allen for Golden who did okay when Allen was hurt.

You would think this would happen and I agree totally. Look at my post in Secondary Woes. Doesn't seem that this is going to happen...

Why buy a minivan (WR) only to shear off the roof and rip out the seats? Just buy a truck (DB).
For every one of these: van.jpg you get 1000 of these: car-photo-1990-oldsmobile-silhouette-minivan-converted-to-pickup-truck-fail.jpg

Let me see if I'm keeping track...

The future of the NFL will have WR's and RB's playing QB and everyone runs the read option because no one can stop it. And instead of employing actual defensive backs, they will now be replaced with WR's? Will there be enough WR's to go around if they have to play WR, QB, and DB?

I wouldn't mind trying DHB at FS, but to take our most effective DB off the field (Mitchell) in order to do it doesn't seem like a fix to me at this point.

I think moving Gay to outside and Boykin to inside makes more sense and will be more effective. I really like Blakes aggressiveness. He is a hard hitter that struggles with tackling. I believe it's due to his wrist injury.. Mitchell is fine where he is. He had a bad game and now I understand he is injured. Perhaps this is the reason he was not playing so well?

Well all Teams will need more DB'S thus why Seattle is trying to convert WR'S to DB'S . To me it is simple supply and demand as we can see the Supply of good DB'S is low and the Demand is high . Now is the time to start thinking outside the box , not 5 years from now...

The same can be said for the QB position a lot of Teams need them and not very many to go around .If Teams can use the rules and adapt their schemes to fit lesser talented QB'S then why not ? We didn't stop Tebow, we didn't stop Wilson, no one is stopping Cam,Kelly had his going until he lost his OG'S..Redskins looked dominate until their QB got hurt .... Tyrod looks pretty good at it...There will always be a place for true pocket passers in the NFL , the Question is where is that place they are going to come from ?

Teams are starting to stack Zone Read QB'S and the NFL will see more and more Teams use it each and every year ....And yes if ran correctly like any Offense there is no way to stop it ...I would go as far as saying if you ask the entire NFL DC'S they would say a dual threat QB is the hardest to prepare for ....Hard to prep a blitz when you don't know where that QB is going to be , and that's why it can't be stopped if he can make just half of his throws ... It is Football 101 you lose your double Team and you lose your force when the running QB has the edge ...

Other. Blake is on the hot seat and he knows his career may be in jeopardy. For at least this game with Indy he will do ok IMO.

He cant though if he is injured. I believe his inability to wrap up and tackle defenders is because of injury

I enjoy reading your insight and ideas, I just like to give you a hard time because you are so sure of yourself!

A true dual-threat QB is every DC's worst nightmare, but how long do they tend to stay dual-threat? If a team can find an athletic passer (Steve Young) then that's the best scenario. Use their athleticism early on while their inherent ability as a pocket passer evolves. To me, though, passing ability always trumps athleticism.

I have no problem looking outside the box for talent. Whether it be bringing in some WR's or QB's to see if that can play DB, or even in other sports (PG to CB?, etc) I think we need to scout areas that are overlooked. One things is certain, I won't bump a pure DB for a project player unless that project shows some undeniable trait, like a collegiate point guard with a perfect frame and an unusually high amount of steals, blocks and rebounds when compared against his peers. Like a Quentin Rollins, for example.

Keep the "wild" ideas coming, and I'll keep trying to reign them back to earth, but I tend to agree with the core principals of what you say.

We'll never know if he's never given the chance in a live game.... I personally feel that golden is better as a fs, but Mitchell is already there..
At the very least, Shamarko is hands down the best tackler of the bunch
