I think part of the problem (and this had been mentioned before) is the fact that the seats are yellow. This stick out pretty darn well on TV.
That being said, I too was at the game yesterday, and most of the times the stadium probably doesn't get "full" until probably 2/3 of the way through the first. Same thing goes after the half. When the 3rd started, I was probably one of 3 people in my row. Granted, I was in the club section where you can watch from the inside, but regardless it gives a bad impression on the TV. I'm not sure how you fix it though. It seems as though some of the people out there like to tailgate well past the start of the game. And then they'll leave again at some point to go out and tailgate some more. It's almost as if they go to the game just to sit in the parking lot.
Is the stadium to blame? Who knows. Sure, the concessions lines could be shorter, but I imagine that's a problem you face at every stadium. I noticed a lack of mobile vendors yesterday, and the more I think about it, I usually don't see them too often at Heinz field. Maybe the fact that if you want a beer or hot dog (or whatever) you have to go inside to get it is part of the problem?

What the hell is going on? Browns could take us over if they wanted.

You have the for resale button clicked a lot of people list the tickets but don't always sell them unless the get a profit. Then they dump them, if not they end up going to the game.

Didn't you go to the Raiders game last weekend? Excuses got to stop man. Browns fans won't buy them like the Raiders. There will just be a lot of empty seats.

I did go to the game. Yes. But if there is one (just one) available seat in that section the whole thing on the map shows blue for that section. I will guarantee you this, there will be Browns fans there Sunday, there was plenty of Raiders fans there last Sunday. They drew an attendance of 66,000 last sunday. If you want to see fans take over a stadium you ought to see when we play the Browns in Cleveland it's almost 1/3 to 1/2 Steelers fans.

No, I understand that. Go click where the seats are available. It isn't one per a section. It's looks like 1/8th of the whole stadium is available. I know our away fans will take over a stadium. It's the home fans that don't want to go to games. They fudge their numbers.. Half the stadium is empty at kickoff and half empty by the 4th.

    What

Can we sticky the articles on what teams report for attendance? It seems some people don't get it yet!

There are 2 Teams that report actual gate turnstile counts! The Steelers and the Giants! They don't report attendance as number of seats sold, so if they say the attendance was a record and was 65k, then that's what went through the turnstiles! It doesn't matter what an unofficial eye test looking at the TV says. Unless you're counting the people in the stadium from a still shot (You'd still miss a lot due to not everyone being visible)

Looks like on the Ticket exchange there are 3,065 tickets available for the Browns game.

I know the article you got that from but keep reading...

If the Steelers reported attendance based on number of tickets sold, they'd announce a sellout for every game. The team has sold out all 117 games played at Heinz Field since it opened in 2001. But that's not how the Rooney's do things and as such, we know that the Steelers are averaging 3,922 no-shows per game this season.

If that number sticks, it will be the second highest average in the past seven seasons. The team averaged 8,189 no-shows per game in 2013, including a Sunday night game against the Bengals in December where over 19,000 people no-showed. That many no-shows can also cut into how much a team can make on concessions, merchandise and other things at a game.

Right, but the OP has said numerous times that the stadium, looked and sounded empty on Sunday. Sunday, the attendance was a record according to the gate count.

The article is from 2013, an 8-8 season, showing how fickle fans can be as far as attending games that they've already bought tickets to.

Also, the Steelers aren't the only team dealing with it. At least they are actually selling the tickets unlike some franchises like the Jaguars and Buffalo.

With an average of 8,000 no shows a game it does look and sound empty. It's progressively gotten worse. It's worse now then it was in 2013. I honestly think it's because of Vick. Somebody didn't do their homework. Every game when I look on Instagram or Twitter I see thousands of pictures with their pets in Steelers gear. Also, if they base their sellout streak on turnstiles and you are getting 8,000 no shows how is there still a sellout streak? People just walking in without tickets now?

I just want an awesome atmosphere when I go to games and for the refs not to be able to walk in and job us at home in the playoffs. You look at stadiums like New England or Philly refs will never go in and screw them because they are scared for their life.

I didn't say they base the sell-out streak on turnstile counts. Read what you quoted from the article. The tickets are sold already. How many people actually go to the game is what they report for attendance!

If they were to report like the other teams they would just say they sold out every game!
That's the key here. Whether any of us like it or not. The Pittsburgh area itself is considered a small market. That's the issue.

Call it over saturation or whatever. This has been happening for awhile now.

Dropping a story from the Browns AFC wildcard round game. People left a Playoff game early and missed the comeback! A PLAYOFF game in Pittsburgh against the Browns no less! http://www.behindthesteelcurtain.co...s-fuamatu-maafala-saves-steelers-vs-browns-in

It's a sellout because all the tickets were sold. Actually sounds like on Sunday the # of people through the gate was pretty good. The Stadium didn't look very full throughout the game. For whatever reason people like to stand in those two walkway ramps and watch the game. So maybe a lot of people weren't in their seats.

    That 8,000 # you're quoting is from 2013 right?

I still think one of the biggest problems is people who acquire season tickets with the sole purpose of reselling for a profit.
For a team that boasts a 20yr waiting list for season tickets you'd think they'd want to make sure people were in those seats on Gameday.

Attendance is pretty steady over the years averaging around 60,000 since 2008, this year averaging 64,000....

Problem is how do you know why someones not attending the games? Can't just say hey we're taking your seats back that you bought and paid for for years because you're not actually going to the games yourself.

    That's not what I'm saying.
I'm saying that if you're a season ticket holder your tickets should have to come through the gate a certain percentage of the games. That way if you can't make a game you'll get them in the hands of someone who'll actually attend the game.

Doesn't the old black out rule work by the TV company buying all the unsold tickets so they can show the game TV, or has that practice changed?

That's what I figured you were saying. I believe that's why they started the ticket exchange from the team website. To facilitate getting those tickets into the hands of someone that would attend the game.

Doesn't quite work that way anymore.

Also, the problem isn't tickets not being sold for the Steelers. It's tickets actually being used at the gates. No-shows are just that. You paid for something that you didn't show up to go to.
