I saw on NFL network last night that Matt Spaeth is out. Is Jesse James going to get the start or do they roll Will j to the side opposite of Heath and let Nix be fullback.

James is no answer based on his pre season performance, he's not ready to start until he improves his bottom line:

Bottom line: Big, in-line tight end with room on his frame for more muscle, but he's limited by a lack of functional athleticism and a mechanical play demeanor. James isn't a plus receiver with great hands and he lacks the quickness to consistently free himself from man coverage, so he must become a more determined run blocker in order to have a shot at starting in the NFL.

I say there's no way James starts.

If Spaeth is out, my guess is James dresses and sees the field rarely if at all.

Given what Nix offers, the benefit of Will J is that he can fill in at TE.

Speath was out earlier this year, I believe they used the Fullback.

I'd say Billy the Kid has a better chance of starting at this point.

Where did that evaluation come from? I dont agree with that at all. I wasnt high on the drafting him but he offers more athleticism and catching ability that that write up suggests. Not saying he is Gronk but not as bad as that evaluation makes him sound.

Also, preseason was 8 games and 2 months ago. Bryant looked like dung in his first preseason and then 8 games later exploded onto the scene. Granted, Bryant has a higher ceiling that James but the point is, he's had half a season to refine his game and learn the playbook.

In 2 TE sets I expect to see Heath on the line of scrimmage and Will J lined up as an H-Back. I don't think we'll see much of James.

I think it's a cbs sports draft prospects analysis. I read some things pre-draft from the site, and for some reason I think I read that write up about James there.

But I think they will activate him for the game. He may not see the field much, but you'd have to think they need another option at TE other than just Will J. God forbid another one of our players gets hurt. We need to have 3 TE's active

I'm pretty much in agreement with that assessment. He looked not very fluid and showed a lack of strength when he was on the field. even on special teams.

I liked this pick since they needed a TE to develop, but I think he's going o need more seasoning and may not see the field unless Will J goes down.

I say him start Blount. I think the reason we are good then slide to be low average is, Our rookies sit for 3 or more years. Look at Dupree, Pouncy and Bell? then Jarvis and Cortez. Just my 2 cents.

Kinda funny I was thinking last week why is Spaeth out there? I am not taking a shot at him but my thinking is we are an offensive team and we know what he is at this point. We have guys like Spaeth, Johnson, Nix and Todman who offer zero offensive power, why not give James a shot to see where he is now and see if he is gonna be here next year? Spaeth has the experience I understand that but offers no upside where as us drafting a TE the last 2 years and not giving one of them a chance is kind of a waste, imo.

I know we only spent a 5th on JJ and a 7th on Branchflower, who is gone now but still we used a pick on him. I say in this cap era we have to see if JJ can replace Spaeth not just for an upgrade on the field but also to see if we could save 500k next season. Even if we keep Spaeth around we at some point have to be worried about Heath, he is no spring chicken. I am in favor of seeing what James has to offer.

NY, I think Spaeth is on the field because he's such a great blocker. He's a big part of the run game when he's healthy.

Yeah your right but I guess my question is how many blockers do we need....Spaeth, Nix, Johnson??? I would rather have 3 TE's and one less FB to help the passing game and see if JJ could help as Heath is getting older. JMO

With our line not looking as hot as I'd like for it to I'd say we need about 16 blockers at any given time.

to be honest i think jj would be a better replacement for spaeth ( if he learns to block as well) and could be a better pass catcher than spaeth. i don't see jj as a replacement for heath but the replacement for our #2 TE. of course JJ had a hard time staying healthy in college too. spaeth can catch also but just doesn't get the opportunity to do it much. my trouble with him though is health and how much we pay for him not to play since we brought him back.
