I think Tomlin made the right call in that situation, Berry needs to get it inside the 10 yard line and not kick a 20 yard punt.

If we try that kick and miss... only a small percentage of Tomlin haters would jump on him for attempting the FG. Most would not blame Tomlin for missing a FG. Was he blamed for all the misses so far this season? While he was the guy that didn't bother to tell our kicker not to make tackles in preseason games... it was our FO that threw away a draft pick for horrible kicker that cost us a win.

It made perfect sense to kick that FG. especially given that our kicker has been $. The risk / reward there is possibly putting he game out of reach vs giving them the ball on the 42 ? And if you trust your defense then why not? They had been great most of the game. Bad things happen on punts also. Our punter has been about as inconsistent as they get. To just expect that ball to be downed inside the 10 is asking a bit much. You give your kicker a shot ...this was not a 56 yarder...this was a kick well in his range... not many coaches would punt in that situation... We were struggling to score points and we had at least a 50/50 shot at making that kick.. I'd say more like 70/30 of making it considering his accuracy in the 45+ range so far. Stupid move that completely goes against Tomlin's mantra of not letting your fears dictate your decisions. He's aggressive at the most moronic times and goes soft when we had a chance to put that game away.

Why?? Because this guy doesn't know how to make decisions! He sucks at this type of things, like clock management. I am really tired of this from Tomlin.

It was actually a 17 yard punt, but that's my point. We should have kicked a field goal since we were only talking about a difference of 17 yards, or, if we'd missed the field goal, a difference of 25 yards. That's not nearly enough to sacrifice 3 points in my book.

Yeah but have them drive 90 yards on the way the defense was playing yesterday, would seem the better choice.
Over 50 yard FG 's at heinz just aren't very easy.

Not easy to pin a team at the 8 yard line, either. You've got a kicker who has the leg and has never missed a field goal. Time to take him out for a spin.

I think there's maybe a 50% chance he misses the FG, but also a 50% chance Berry kicks it short of the 15 or into the end zone. Difference is, one of those only changes field position by 25 yards, and the other gives us 3 points. It's a roll of the dice either way. Go with the points.

As far as the punt goes, how come no kicker punts the ball out of bounds anymore? I assume the kickers kind of have an idea on how hard they have to kick it, so why not just kick it that hard but angle it out of bounds. Seems like a no brainer to me.
Or, worst case scenario, take the delay of game and get a 5 yard cushion so you can get off a higher, further punt.

Or, maybe Tomlin is living in his fears after all and remembers the two missed field goals by our last kicker and the heat he got? It looked like a call by somebody playing scared to me. Just what we need, a dumb coach playing scared.

    p

Should of kicked the field goal, and should of called time out at the 2:38 left mark and then the clocked would of stopped at the 2:00 mark, instead of letting 38 seconds run off the clock. That could of been 2 extra plays at the end. Also our kicker hasn't missed yet! Just bad coaching no matter how you look at it.

I'd have tried some razzle dazzle type stuff like the Georgia Tech vs Clemson fake field goal.

As others have pointed out, Boswell has shown a strong leg, and has hit all of his kicks including a 51 yarder. It would have been a tough FG, but he had a decent chance of making it. The situation was not the same as if Suisham or Scobee were still the kicker.

Don't the players have to go out there and execute still?
