The Reasons We Lost

From my observations of the game the main reason we lost are:

1) No Ben, enough said.

2) Tuitt was out - this I feel was way bigger than most will note. Tuitt is a great gap man, run stopper, and gets pressure quickly. He really helps the rest of the line and the entire D. Cam Thomas is not 1/10th the player Tuitt is and is was a major factor in this game.

3) Poor judgement on the coaching staff to take Bell out on short yardage. While we all like what DW did when Bell was out, he is not a specialist short yardage back. I trust Bell to get a single yard more, and so should the coaches.

4) Lack of screens to Bell and lack of getting it to Heath.

5) No answer for a big pass catching TE - this scars me down the road. We could not contain Gates, but still won. We could not contain Gronk and lost and now could not contain Kelce (sp?). The Cleveland TE scars me a little.

6) Trust the new kicker.

 

What about all the missed tackles?

 

Chalk it up to another Tomlin trap game against a team with a very weak record. Really not a surprise anymore.

I am positive that they will come up more determined this week after that loss but if they can't figure out how to cover a TE immediately then it will get into a shootout that we won't be able to match up well with.

This pretty much sums it up

 

The D was off today. Lack of pass rush, wide open passing lanes. Tuitt was missed. Dupree is coming along.

AV got his @ss handed to him. This was a concern of mine. Good learning experience which I hope he cleans up for next week.

The Offense came out throwing, then it seemed they couldn't get into a rhythm much at all. The Chiefs defense woke up and it showed. Landry was rushed into throws. Bell was a bright spot.

On to the Bungles. Hopefully this doesn't start a spiral downward. The team is good and have fought through adversity. But today this secondary looked putrid and could be the undoing.

 

Landry played like it was his first start. Last week was an aberration. First pass was good, next several not so good from a play calling perspective. WR screen to Brown goes for loss, but no other WRs on that side to block.

 

This team needs to go to remedial tackling classes. They were terrible.
The team came out flat, as we have seen before, and it didn't get much better.
It would be wonderful to have a secondary that can cover or at least know their assignments.

 

Blake is a nightmare looking for a place to happen. Unfortunately, he keeps finding a place for it to happen on the Steelers defense on game day. He is terrible. Maybe we don't have anyone better. If that is so, shame on us. I was hoping when he was injured before half he would not return to the game. No such luck. He can't cover and he can't tackle.

 

AV did not "Get his ass handed to him". His only real knock was the last sack/fumble and Hali just showed him some veteran stuff. AV took it and hopefully he learned to not let it happen with Ben in the game. I think he'll be fine going forward.

 

Yeah he only made a few rookie mistakes and getting beat wasn't one of them in my opinion. The only real glaring one was on the 4th and 1 try he chose to dbl team Foster's guy and not the two lined up to seal the edge on the outside. Had he chose to block the guy outside Williams has a lane to fall forward between AV and Foster instead hit behind the line and lost momentum.

 

Sorry, his Butt handed to him. Not a knock but for his first full start he had his hands full. He will see more of this against the Bungles.

 

Would have been nice if D. Williams would have caught the ball that bounced off his face mask. Who knows maybe we score a TD there instead of kicking a FG

If Brown makes that catch instead of tipping the ball to the Chiefs who knows...

Not sure why we continue to play off of WR's especially when playing these west coast short pass type teams?

He didn't do terrible, but wasn't overly impressive either. I doubt he's a long term answer at LT, but stranger things have happened.
I love his story, but at the end of the day we need players who can help us win. I do think he'll continue to improve though.
Interesting story to watch for sure

 

I don't think Tuitt would have changed things much, to me the game plan was shoddy from the beginning.

The TE on KC had huge windows to run in. Its not just jarring them at the line, if you plan to account for him you need to have him double covered tighter than that.

I'm fine with Deangelo as the short yardage person, but at least change it up on the 2nd 4th down. Fake the run and throw it to Heath, who didn't see that run coming?

Didn't seem Steelers Blitzed a whole bunch, they crowded the line hoping it confused Smith, and it didn't... should have blitzed way more.

Blake is a miss tackling machine... yeah he gave us a pick six, but his missed tackles are bleeding this defense slowly.

 

The only thing I don't like is that once again it appears that the Pats a re a runaway with their division and so they likely will have home field where they are so tough to beat even without the refs helping them.

I tried to warn the fans don't be surprised if Landry and AV struggle both making their first starts, also the missed tackles. How in the heck do you give up 100 yds rushing to that RB West? You would think playing the Chiefs without Maclin and Charles would be a easy win, not so with the inconsistent Steelers defense.

 

Really though, if you think about it, this team is built perfectly to beat our defense. We play to not give up the big play. They don't have a big play in their whole playbook. They are designed to just take what is given them. The Cards aren't like that. They are BA ball and depend on the big play and that's why they stall between the 20's. Any team that is death by a thousand paper cuts can beat our d all day. That's my two cents anyway.

 

It seems logical that it should be a part of the plan. I would be a huge proponent of knocking all receivers off their routes at the line, but there has to be a reason its not widely done a lot in the NFL or at least very effectively. It must not be practical or realistic to do to an NFL receiver all game... with the new rules they will always get open.

I mean look at Edelman, he is a tiny dude, why not knock him on his butt all game, don't even give him a chance? He always gets a clean release and it baffles me no team really tries it?

 

I think it's because guys are so fast now that if you whiff at the line you are looking at 6. It kills me to see guys being turned loose so frequently though.
