Actually the Coach for the Patriots stated it and the Coach for the Cowboys. They both stated they rest the Starting QB 1 day a week and let the BU do the work in an effort to have him prepared if needed. Those are 2 Teams I know there are more out there.

As Coach Herm would say 'You play to win the game ' if the starting QB takes all the reps and he is 1 hit away from being out of the game, that's not playing to win the game .

Do you guys think that Bell takes every Rep at RB ? Do you think AB takes every snap as the #1 WR ? Do you think Miller takes every snap as the #1 TE . Well I can answer those for you. No they do not and for sure neither should Ben. Ben complained about his camp reps and I bet Haley gave into him and stopped getting the BU ready . Both thinking all Vick will do is carry a clipboard, well that cost them the Ravens game.....

Next man up can't step up if not properly prepared.Again that is up to the Coach to make sure that they are.The tape showed neither Vick nor Haley were prepared .

Sorry, Id have to see that, not saying you are lying, just maybe mistaken. There simply isnt enough practice time to take it away from the starting QB. Im sure its like you say back before the new CBA but not now. Id be very surprised if true.

And it didnt cost us the game, Scobee missing two kicks cost us the game and Vick missing a 5 yard out is no excuse regardless of practice time. I admit the coaches didnt do him any favors calling that play for a left handed QB but that all goes towards my argument that they never should have brought him here. Unless you have a left handed starter, you should not bring in a left handed back up.

I found a link where garret talks about the the backup getting a day a week last season due to romo's injury. He goes on to talk about how they're using virtual reality to help with prep because there aren't enough reps for the backups. So yeah I'm pretty sure this was just a pwp interpretation thing

I took it just how he said it. Coaches job is to get the BU QB ready by any means that you can. Something Haley failed to do. Ben stated of course we are going to go for 2 we spend to much practice time on it not to use it . Had Haley used Vick 20 % of that time on those in practice he could have and would have had a better game plan for Vick when Ben went down. Again not so sure why this is so hard to grasp ?

Give the running QB 3 snaps out of the GL 10 that you run that day, what they get 2 practices a week now I guess ? So that's at least 6 times the number of weeks .So since Aug 25TH. til Ben went down on Sept 27th. one full month later the Coach should have had at least 24 plays to evaluate Vick on . Again had he had those he would have had at least 2 Bread and Butter plays for Vick in crunch time that would have sealed the game .

Exactly why I stated in the How will they use Vick thread they should be getting him Reps , but they are probably not . The bottom line is Teams are going to have to find ways because the QB'S are going to go down and 1 bad loss could be the season such said loss could turn out to be the Rats game.

No you took it as evidence that the steelers coaches don't know what they're doing and used it to try and support your argument. Unfortunately for you google exists and your proof is easily proven false.

Nice article and some Coaches are looking to find ways to help get there guys ready . As a former Coach I have seen the starting QB learn just as much standing back in the all 22 look as they can get taking the reps. The starters already have chemistry they need to know where the holes in the Defense are it is my take it is more valuable to get some QB center exchanges in. It is my take it is more valuable to get some mesh point reps in on the handoffs. It is more valuable to let the BU understand how his guys run routes .

Give the starter 80 % of reps give the BU 20 % this is the way I was taught to Coach and we didn't look like idiots when the starting QB went down .We knew what he did well and what he didn't do well. I like Haley as a Coach ,but failing to know that information is bad Coaching. The bottom line he had a chance to gather that Info , but failed to do so......

Never said they didn't know what they were doing. I said they were making a mistake by not using Vick some in practice and I am correct . I bet you Haley wishes he had used Vick more on those 2 pt conversions in practice. I am thinking as a Coach and I am sure he is kicking himself now.

The question he is asking himself is how much would it have hurt to take away a few of Ben's reps..?
How much would it have helped to give Vick a few reps ?

This is really not for the benefit of Vick , but to benefit the OC . You can't Coach if you don't know what your Coaching. That's not a guess that's a fact the tape showed that . I expect a lot better this week as he will be a lot more prepared to Coach him.

It's hard to grasp because you just don't take snaps away from your healthy starting QB. You must feed them all the work they can get. Trying to squeeze in a few gimmick plays to a backup QB just limits the effectiveness of the starter, and isn't enough work for the backup.

You mean the play that Vick got stuffed on and the play where he missed an absurdly open Antonio Brown? That's probably about the success rate you're looking at no matter how many practice reps you give Vick, and the reason you never take practice time away from your starter, and never ever take your starter out of the game for a gimmick play(er): Ben makes that throw to AB and Vick doesn't.

Professional backup QB's are going to have to find ways to be better prepared without taking snaps away from the starter. They have to make the most of their practice time with the scout team, keep their nose in the playbook, and pay attention at practice and in the meetings.

When Ben comes back Vick should literally get zero practice snaps with the starters, unless the coaches decide to rest his knee.

And this approach will cost you games. Just because the Starter is better doesn't mean you shouldn't have a BU plan . By the way the Zone Read is no longer a Gimmick in the NFL . It is here to stay at least 3 Teams run it as over Half of there Offense. 1 of which was in the Superbowl. So when the Offense looks much better this week and Vick plays much better what will you attribute that to ?

Vets in the same system don't need lots of Reps , they need mental reps against the other Teams bread and butter blitzes . What you are not getting is Ben would actually learn more by watching a few reps.Once you have Chemistry the next best thing is seeing how play A develops against blitz A then blitz B and then blitz C . This is how you determine progression , but you can't get there until you have a basic Chemistry with the players around you . Ben has that the BU QB does not. That is a problem in today's NFL no matter how you look at it .

Again they will have some this week and will look much better , but in a 16 game season that's 1 game to late.....

And at least two of those three teams that run the zone read have terrible offenses, the Seahawks and 49ers, presumably. Not sure who the third team is, the Titans? Either way, the tried and true method for success in the NFL is to have a traditional pro-style offense lead by a competent passing QB. Every now and then a totally dominant defense comes along and propels a team to a championship, no matter what kind of offense the team runs.

Our offense will look better because Vick is now the starter and is now getting all the starter reps, as should be. Landry Jones should not be getting any. And because of that, Haley should open up the playbook more, which could be good or bad, depending on how you look at it. More opportunities to throw for Vick can also mean more opportunities to throw into a hornet's nest.

Film. You can film from many angles, and still allow your QB to take all the practice reps and get his mental reps in.

What you are suggesting probably works in the NCAA, and more than likely is a good practice to do in high school where the talent pool is so disproportionate. But the NFL is so ultra competitive and evenly matched that winning usually comes down to having a competent QB or not.

I do agree with winning most times come down to QB play , but i still think it is a bad ideal to not get the BU reps Get LJ some reps and let Vick actually be with the OC behind the set and get some live feed back. Just my style 80 to 20 I really believe the NFL will evolve to this as well . To many QB'S going down and to high if Stakes to just throw a game away .

Thanks for the link Strummer :thumbs up:

GB, every one of your responses should be framed and sprinkled with glitter, that was spot on.

PWP, I might add that you dont have to take into consideration the exuberant contracts that are in play for NFL coaches. Owners are going to want their 100 million dollar QBs as prepared as humanely possible. Ben didnt miss a game in 2 seasons up until this injury. Preparing for something that may never happen isnt a luxury teams can afford.

Duh, it's called timing it doesn't matter who the receiver is they still need more than one practice together. And Vick is left handed something else AB isn't used to.

No team with a franchise QB is prepared for that player to go down. There is a frenzy of trade, free agent signing and back up player speculation every time this happens. On a lesser degree its also true with an injury to a star skill player. The Steelers were no exception imo. The question I hear asked the most on national media and by Steeler fans is why was someone brought in who is so different from the starter? Right handed, left handed, pocket passer, running QB, etc etc. We know about the Tomlin-Vick connection. I'm not certain what was the right move as Landry Jones did not inspire confidence in anyone after Bruce went down. I'm sure Tomlin thought that Ben would be relatively injury free after last year's results. So he went with his pick. did emotions get the best of him--who knows, we'll see by the W-L record when Ben returns.

But I would be fairly confident in saying that Haley is not the most at fault for Vicks play on a short week. Do you really think the relationship between Ben and AB is developed by letting the backups get reps at practice? I would be inclined to think not. The coaching staff is handcuffed by the CBA for practice time and it is what it is. Would the coaches love to spend an extra 30 minutes on getting the backups time? Your damn right they would. Teams take a dive when the franchise QB goes down, hence all the flag football rules. You have to invest in the position to achieve depth there.

Broncos nailed it when they drafted Osweiler as a back up. Lets hope we can too in the next year or two.

I remember watching the Bills in the early 90's. Frank Reich was mediocre when he became a starter after Kelly retired, but he was awesome as a BU QB. Think of that Houston Oilers playoff game:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Comeback_(American_football)

What the Steeler's needed and wanted was a low-maintenance, durable backup who could take over with minimal changes (other than simplifying the calls and running more) and was safe with the football.

Which makes it strange that they went with Vick, who is high-maintenance (not prepared without starter snaps), oft-injured, tends to turn the ball over, and requires the entire offense to adjust to his throwing left-handed.
