The talking heads on ESPN radio were so sure that not even the Pats would have the "balls" to do that after just getting away with the deflategate - especially on national TV. I'm thinking why the hell wouldn't they?

    That's much ado about nothing.

Refs can ask for a 25 second reset on the play clock following anything that delays placing the ball at the LOS - even if the 40 second clock is already ticking. (Such as a long incompletion or player going out of bounds) Brady was mimicking the ref's signal to the clock operator to get their attention. ALL teams do this. Happens every game.

Ray this was a beautiful written piece and I would never destroy a perfectly good rant however one small thing, they did say the Pats were having problems with their headsets as well during the live broadcast as it was happening to the Steelers. They didn't elaborate that it wasn't the coach to coach system but rather Brady's receiver being sketchy. I do agree though that in no way does the league want the 2001 Superbowl tarnished it was too perfect for what the country was going through. WE had been attacked, people were scared, people thought the country was vulnerable, war was coming and here the New England Patriots were winning the Superbowl, showing American Patriotism was strong. You couldn't write a better script than that. No way they want to say that in order to win those games they had cheated to get there, it cheapens what the country holds dear.

A better script would have been if the Yankees had won the WS :frustrated:

I agree TOTALLY. I always felt like that would have really been even more uplifting to the city that year. AZ was in sort of a horrible position in that World Series if you think about it. I always was sorta bitter against AZ anyway because that's where Mark Grace went after leaving the Cubs. He's really one of my favorite players ever.

    That doesn't mean much.

    1) As another poster said, they could have swapped Brady's helmet and solved the problem at any point. That's not the same problem the Steelers had.
    2) As long as we're theorizing conspiracy, the whole point is that if New England knew there were going to be problems, they could be extra prepared to deal with a shut down in communications. It even makes them seem like co-victims, if they're having issues too (if they really were).

"The Pats had someone screw with the Steelers' radio communications, knowing that either they would maintain an advantage by keeping their own radios on, or gain an advantage by being forced to turn off their radios along with the Steelers, but having non-radio communication built strongly into the gameplan in a way no other team would ever ordinarily do."

That sounds crazy, but look who we're talking about. It's on the same exact level as all the other cheating they've done. And they know there will be no punishment, because they are so in bed NFL that the NFL can't punish them without punishing itself, and it just won't do that. It already tried once (barely), and failed.

The only thing that surprises me about this is that it was the first game back. I thought they'd take at least one game off. I guess I was giving them too much credit. I didn't think that was possible.

On the bright side, Tomlin made a pretty big stink about it, pretty out of character for the united league. I think the Pats are going to have to end this scheme. Can't wait to hear what the next one is. Only a matter of time until hypnosis and tripwires are involved.

Just curious though.... if the NFL provides the expensive radio headsets for the games..... why don't they supply game balls? Just sayin!!!

The Pats play football according to the Art of War, according to my memory of the book. Using spies, assassins, sabotage, any means necessary to get an advantage. That includes knowing the rules and any vagueness and using that for an advantage (eligible receivers on the line from last year, linemen jumping around, etc.). I imagine they review the rulebook and look for any advantage, even bending the rules, if they can. It is quite brilliant.

And to add to the unsubstantiated plots, they run the organization like individual terrorist cells, no one group knowing what the other is up to, and no central coordination. The ball guys "know" Brady likes his ball inflated a certain way, and they make it happen, all on their own. The radio guys know what an advantage would be, and can make it happen. There is no directive or culpability on any leader's part, but everyone knows they are to look for any advantage. A decentralized system of stretching any rule they can to get an advantage.

No evidence for this, of course.

    Brilliant, but evil.

Ben has shed more light on this situation..

“In a lot of games, the offensive coordinator to quarterback headset, there’ll be — whether it’s one play, it’s static, something — it’ll go out,” Roethlisberger told 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh, via Pro Football Talk. “It doesn’t matter if it’s at home, on the road, it just never fails. There’s almost always some kind of communication [problem]. But it’s real brief. It never lasts very long.

"I think the difference this time — and this is, like I said, there was no communication issues really between coach (Todd) Haley and myself — but what I was told and what Bruce (Gradkowski) told me when he listened is that when we had the ball on offense, our coach-to-coach communication, so the guys up in the box to the guys on the sideline, were not only hearing themselves but they were hearing the radio broadcast of the game. And from what I was told from coach Haley it was only when we had the ball. When the Patriots had the ball there was no radio broadcast.”
