I saw segments of his rant about this on Twitter yesterday before he pieced them together for this article. I see this all the time when a fan is in love with a player and gets upset when the team releases them. Managing a roster is full of challenging decisions. How was Grant going to help the Steelers roster over the next few weeks? He probably wouldn't see the field all season.

Lastly, I'm sure the Steelers front office is aware of who they have under contract and for how long. :lollmao:

Draft profiles are often all over the place but here is one on Grant --

"Too hands-on downfield with his arms extend, making him an easy target for pass interference calls. More reactionary than instinctive and can be late to find the ball. Tends to second guess himself. Overeager tackler with bad habits that leads to missed tackles, especially in space. Skill-level has appeared to level off and he doesn't have ideal NFL upside."

Sounds like it was a risky pick from the get go but I guess they all are.

Maybe he just wasn't good enough?
    Maybe he stole Tomlin's wallet?
Maybe they found out he had character issues?
Who really knows, but why keep a guy if he doesn't fit?
Why does it always have to be Tomlin and Colberts shortcomings? Could it possibly just be Grants fault?

He was just a rook though. He certainly didn't look totally incapable out there... I don't think he will ever be a star, but I felt he could be a Will Allen/Deshae type?

But for crying out loud don't you think Grant deserved a longer look given our current state of the defensive backfield? If anything I would think the team would want to keep him around a while longer based on the recent history of CBs drafted in the 4th and 5th rounds. From what I read, Grant had a decent camp, at least to the point of earning a longer look. He's now the highest drafted player sitting on the waiver wire.

Another article about our secondary woes:

Agree, seemed like they cut ties with him quick. Tells me that either he was terrible or had some other issues that we're not aware of.
Has he been picked up by anyone else yet?

Wish we were privy to how they decide things. Like why does Shark get so long but Grant is shown the door after 5 preseason games.

The Grant thing is disappointing because after the draft, you're hopeful that Golson and Grant will help lock down the position and now both are lost for the season. At least there is still hope for Golson.

Holiman is another one I had hopes for but at least he was a 7th rd pick.

As fans we are tired of seeing our secondary being torched. Last year Tom& Co. Gave us the worse loss ever, Gave up 400+ yds passing, 600+ yds of offense and 55 points. It also seems like, true or not, we cant find or even develop DB's anymore and this from a franchise that fielded, Blount, Shell, Woodson, Lake, Troy.....

Grant was to be "that" guy who may not contribute this year but developed into what we desperately need.

The thing is at half time vs Carolina Tomlin said it was a shame all these young guys were not taking advantage and showing they deserve to be here. We were torched by Jacksonville,Buffalo, Carolina.... wow

Tomlin is making a statement by cutting Webb,Fogg,Holiman,Arden,Wild and then Grant...then he benches Shark.......

Yes, the players need to play better but lets remember our position coach needs to coach better too!!!!

Shamarko got benched already? I didn't realize they moved him down the depth chart. I know the draft is a crap shoot and fans, unreasonably for the most part, expect superstars at every position but I just don't see how picks like Landry and Archer don't get under some people's skin when we obviously have more pressing needs than project players. Yes I know that we've needed a good return guy for a while and it would be nice to have an explosive, Sproles type, player but I think we need more help in more constant positions like linebacker, safety, and corner. That's my two cents anyway.

I think they jumped the gun on this kid just like they did on Urbik, there are 4 or 5 undrafted FA cornerbacks in the hall of fame, they signed with teams who stuck with them and made it pay off, one of them was UFA Jack Butler who played for the steelers...........

    This is kinda my point.
Why can't we look at all the possibilities, why does it always go straight to "Colbert can't draft DB's" or "Tomlin can't coach"

Seems people forget the positives that happen. They only care about the negative and as a result want someone to blame.

I have not been a fan of the Steelers always dipping into the OSU draft eligible pool. They are a great college organization and have good players. They just haven't been panning out. Shazier may be the exception we shall see. It's probably the same success rate from players at other schools, but the OSU players stick out because we seem to draft one every year.

I didn't get to see many OSU games last year besides the playoffs. Grant never struck out to me but I was watching those games more as entertainment if that makes sense. I didn't see too many draft profiles of him this past offseason.

However, I thought he did fairly well in the preseason from what I could see. His tackling seemed pretty consistent. I was shocked to see him jettisoned and thought he was definitely worth some future coaching. He had some decent size too. I was rooting for this one to stick.

A reporter said that Shamarko told him that yesterday. He's still top on the depth chart, but those aren't always accurate.

I don't like all the OSU picks either. I guess it's a product of being from SEC country and hearing all the people around here talk about how "they don't play anybody" and stuff like that. I suppose I just have this image in my mind of them looking like beasts on tape against scrubs that will never sniff the NFL. I think Eddie George is pretty much my favorite player to ever come from there. I do like Cam Heyward though.

Ha, yeah. OSU is like the Steelers farm team. Grant was OK. I'm not in the meetings, training room, practice field etc, but he looked average.

Bottom roster guys are never safe the first week, especially when you've got a slew of injuries and suspensions. They didn't waive him during the waiver period, so I guess that says something. If Golson was healthy, I doubt there would be much outrage over this.

I think if they spend a 3 or 4 pick on a player they should at least keep him around longer than just to have a cup of coffee, or their draft player evaluation process is flawed??

Dude... this is Steeler Nation. We always find a reason for outrage. I remember a huge thread about a guy named Moye once. LOL! That's why I love this place so much. For things like that to fire us up like that we obviously love this team.

I keep forgetting Heyward is from OSU lol! I grew up in Ohio and root for the Buckeyes and Huskers and most of the Big 10 schools. I'm anxious to watch their game tonite.

Can you tell me how people up there view the SEC? Down here people hate the Big 10 and swear up and down that the media is out to get the SEC and just loves the Big 10. There's this weird paranoia almost. Are people up there completely indifferent and oblivious to the SEC?

I would have to lay some blame on the scouting dept. They are the ones who bring the team's attention to the prospective players. I wonder if the scouts get graded out on their "hits and misses". I know its a cumulative effort, but it would be interesting to see how their reviewed.

Side note, I didn't know former DB Chidi Iwouma was on the scouting dept. I knew former TE Bruener was but hadn't seen the Iwouma hire mentioned.

From everyone I talk to, the SEC is considered the top dog. I think everyone up here is just tired of hearing how good the SEC is and none of the other conferences get any respect.

The "which is the best conference" debate is lost on me though. Just another topic to debate lol. Good teams are good teams irregardless. Hopefully the new playoff system will sort all that out. I played Div. III in college and there was a playoff system and it worked great. It's so much better imo than the BCS ratings they did previously.
