Saw this earlier, on several sites, but he got into two fights today, and Tomlin sent him off the field. Guess he finally hit something, albeit a teammate, but hey it's a start.....joking....I am not going to even listen to the talking heads and their "babble" of Dupree being a bust as of now simply due to the fact he's had two preseason games in his career, and is simply lost as of now. What Dupree is dealing with when it comes to the media, and fans is what I will labe the "Jarvis" effect- right now Dupree is expected to contribute because his counterpart has done zero to this point. JJ was injured most of last year, and going into his 3rd year we all want to see him live up to his 1st round pick. Dupree will get even less time to show something to warrant his selection this year, and he will defiantly feel the pressure sooner as these two HAVE to perform, and get to the QB, or this D will be mediocre at best. Not fair to Dupree by any means, but he has JJ to thank for it.

Mike Tomlin was looking for a spirited practice Wednesday after a scheduled off-day and got more than he bargained for. Rookie outside linebacker Bud Dupree got into an altercation with Kelvin Beachum that got Dupree so heated that James Harrison and Cam Heyward had to try to calm him down. It didn't end there. A couple of periods later, during individual offensive line/defensive line drills, Dupree and Marcus Gilbert exchanged blows before the start of the period that led to another fracas, forcing Tomlin to intervene and remove Dupree from the drill. Linebacker coach Joey Porter and Ramon Foster then exchanged words after some of the offensive linemen said the “rookie”— Dupree — needed to know his place. It was the first significant altercation in nearly four weeks of training camp.

Something got him worked up. I like his intensity. :)

The first-round draft pick got into two fights: the first against the offensive line, and the second Marcus Gilbert to start the one-on-one drills.

None of it was pretty, and Dupree was finally ordered from the linemen's pit to go work with the coverage unit at the other end of the field.

It started, most likely, with Dupree on the receiving end of "getting punked," as linemen call any kind of cheap shot. Dupree took a swing at Kelvin Beachum and the rest of the line collapsed on top of Dupree. Jarvis Jones came off the sideline to take out several offensive linemen from behind to aid Dupree, who got up still shouting as Alejandro Villanueva stuck a big finger in his face. James Harrison pushed Dupree back and shouted in the rookie's face to get his emotions under control.

The period ended soon thereafter, as the scrimmage broke off into two groups. Dupree then lined up for his one-on-one and at the snap immediately began fighting with Gilbert. After Dupree was pulled back, he came back to get into the face of the line again as Ramon Foster began shouting "This from a rookie!" OLB coach Joey Porter defended Dupree by shouting that "Just because he's a rookie doesn't mean he's supposed to take that stuff!"

Dupree could not be calmed until Tomlin walked over and made sure Dupree left the area.

Idk that its necessarily Jarvis' fault, but most of the time people expect way too much out of rookies. It can't be a real thing to label a player as a "bust" after two preseason games tho... That's just ridiculous. You knew this was going to be the case with Dupree from the get go. He came out early with no position coach, no pass rush moves, and really nothing other than raw athleticism on tape. He is an athlete and nothing more at this point. While I'd like for him to use this "superior" athleticism to beat a tackles (that will eventually be cut) in a preseason game, I realize he has a lot going on in his brain and it makes it hard to play football.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Dupree pre-draft (I preferred Landon Collins, who btw would look great as a starting safety for us right now haha) but I knew that we had to be patient with him. He will either come into his own and use that athleticism to be an absolute beast, or he will be just a pure athlete and flame out completely. Only time will tell, but I'm willing to give the guy that time before I start labeling him.

Eh, they are tired of hitting each other... At lest he has some spunk in him.

Read the OP, how is this Jarvis' fault exactly?

I saw Dupree at the HOF game, he has a quick get off once the ball is snapped.... real quick, maybe quicker than anyone currently on the team.

He just needs to learn how to play the run and use his hand better.

What is up with the OLine and thinking that because a guy is showing some hustle and intensity in practice it means he doesn't know his place? I get not wanting the starting unit to be injured heading into the season but you also can't be soft and Ramon Foster is almost always the softest of the guys so maybe he needs to shut up, nut up and get to work. I mean Pouncey calls out the ST unit but a defensive player can't show some intensity without a scuffle breaking out?

Today wasn't JJ's fault, as I said, the situation Dupree has been drafted into is to improve an awful pass rush, and to do it sooner rather than years later if at all. Dupree was a 1st round pick along with JJ and fans want results.... NOW

But what you're defending Dupree from - the expectation to perform immediately - seems to be exactly what you're then accusing Jarvis Jones of, surely? Dupree is suffering from heightened expectation because Jones suffered from heightened expectation?

I might be misreading you, though.

Love that Porter knew exactly what they were doing to him and decided to shut Foster up!

Ramon Foster does realize he's the weak link on that line, right?
I get not wanting to be shown up by a rookie, but I like the fire. It seems as though Dupree is frustrated, and wants to use that pent up energy. I say harness that energy and turn him loose in the next preseason game.

Hopefully his frustration doesn't turn into 15 yard penalties when the lights go on.

I would echo TTF sentiment. I like the intensity. Bud is new and trying to fit in . He is still learning and as a consequence he is likely experiencing a great deal of frustration. Perhaps his development as a rookie is not to his liking or maybe he is just "that" intense he is not going to take any crap from anyone regardless if it's a team mate or not.

He will develop into a good player. My expectation for him is to see the field very soon.

You're missing the point. It wasn't his frustration that ticked him off it was a little cheap shot "getting punked" they gave him and apparently continued to give him. That's why Peezy said what he said. Foster was the ass-hat that had to talk crap about Geathers "practicing" too hard last year, now he's trying to give the business to a rookie who's just getting acclimated to the NFL?

It's all part of the initiation into the NFL. I like the intensity, hopefully it can be translated to the field.

I think it was on the Atlanta series of Hard Knocks, where one of the coaches summed it up: "you don't get better doing that kind of ****."

I've seen this team penalised too much for late hits and weak discipline to ever get excited by a guy starting a fight in training camp, regardless of who (if anyone) was at fault. The time they have available to practice in pads is short enough as it is.

It's about time we had a good fight. Seems a little late in camp to get one. What is this camp cupcake? :lolol:

You Never know the situation he could have felt someone tried to chop block him ? For a guy known for a calm demeanor I would think it would take something he perceived as dirty to go off like that ?

I normally could care less about camp fights. This time I feel a little different.

The guys over at depot said he was running his mouth. Started a fight with Beachum who has a reputation of clean play and class. Kept running his mouth..Foster had enough and as he went to him he kept running his mouth while running away..... Will have a hard time living that part down.

I don't like it, Im on record as not liking the pick during our mock draft period. I thought he was physically gifted but too much of a project as he underperformed in college. He has shown that to be true, has been underperforming in games and camp and I think this new found "fire" is simple frustration born out of continued failure.

He is a Steelers now so for the time being I'm going to give him time, support him and pray he doesn't become a bust. I'm hoping he develops much better technique, quits acting like a spoiled child and gets some "real fire" and truly becomes what we all feel he can be.

Sidenote - His troubles in college were attributed by some as being switched from DE to OLB...... with our "new" DC and system(s) is he practicing/playing both roles here?

I disagree with this portrayal of the events. It makes it sound like he was the instigator, and I haven't read one first hand account that indicated that. He was angry and a bunch of guys were fighting him.

I also don't think he's frustrated due to continued failure. At least, I don't see how he's continually failed.

On the first link read down near the bottom for the description of what happened. The other link just discusses his underperformance in the two preseason games. I've read a number of camp reports on his struggles and even how Chick is outplaying him looking more explosive and winning more battles in camp. Didn't have time to look those up and link them but I will if you require it. It may take me a day as I'm about to leave.

You are correct in we just never know. Only have camp reports from others it almost becomes he said she said. Different people seeing the same event can often recount it with varying degrees of accuracy. Having said that we should know Beachum has several camps and years of playing here and I can't recall any thing like this happening to him or with him........

Something happened.. this we know, exactly what, we may never know..... Hopefully Dupree grows from this.
