It does seem like Golden has regressed since he made some noise his 1st year. But I thought Darby was the safety that was late getting over when the TE scored. But today they said it was Thomas who missed the assignment.

There are sure a lot of names on the depth chart for the secondary. 3 more games for someone to separate.
    Cajun took:
    CB- Cortez,Blake,Gay,Boykin,Grant,Webb

    S- Mitchell, S.Thomas,W.Allen, Golden....

I think they kept 10 secondary people last year too.

Good thing they picked up Boykin. That helps the list look decent. Grant will stay as a drafted player.

Webb looked okay game 1 but not vs JAX. Who's left for that possible spot?

    Depth Chart

FS Mike Mitchell Robert Golden Gerod Holliman Alden Darby
    Jordan Sullen

SS Shamarko Thomas Will Allen Ross Ventrone Jordan Dangerfield
    Ian Wild

LCB William Gay Antwon Blake Kevin Fogg Doran Grant

LCB William Gay Antwon Blake Kevin Fogg Doran Grant

    Who's left?

Holliman, Darby, Sullen--Ventrone, Dangerfield, K.Fogg, Ian Wild.

    Cajun's ---
CB- Cortez,Blake,Gay,Boykin,Grant,Webb---Earlier someone put Ventrone[extra S instead of CB Webb.] His ST play warrants a spot. Unless someone shows some super cover skills soon Ventrone is back.

S- Mitchell, S.Thomas,W.Allen, Golden.... I don't think I kept Golden last year so that leaves that spot for Darby, Dangerfield, Wild, Holliman or Sullen. A real coin flip.

    Cajun's OL picks:

OL- Beachum,Foster,Pouncey,DD,Gilbert,Wallace, Big Al, Hubbard, Adams. Hate Adam's isn't working....again!!... Hubbard's experience beats out BJ's disappointing performance.

This thread was a good idea. Maybe a week early, but Nah! sooner or later these players have to be looked at hard one way or the other. From looking at the picks I take it none of the newcomers have enough to replace any returning vets. AV an exception.

They kept 9 last year also.
    OL- Starters: Beachum,Foster,Pouncey,DD, and Gilbert,
The other 4 were Wallace, Adams, Hubbard and We.Johnson. Hmm! Almost the same.

Well, like I said this was a good idea to get a line on all these players. I was going to post the OL depth chart but will wait a week. This week at GB might be a good chance to look at all those new OL players here. Really not much room available. Some fans might replace Hubbard but it is looking like the PS is the option for those new OL guys.

Frankly, as usual, I did not pay any attention to the OL. But, generally the protection was good so someone was blocking for sure.

Yeah looks like Archer wouldn't be eligible for PS since he was on active roster more than 9 games last season. So the option is keep on 53 man roster or cut him I guess. Don't see Steelers cutting him.

They do seem to like DHB. He doesn't have good hands so as a WR he is limited. He isn't a demon on ST like Garvin or Golden but as a blazing gunner he does command attention. CJ is a much better WR, young and will only get better. I like Zumwalt but Garvin is much better on ST AND he is showing he may be a decent ILB as his play there is improving.

Holliman- I was excited when we drafted him. I knew his short comings....can't/won't tackle... but had hopes that would be corrected in camp. Last game he totally whiffed on an open field tackle... looked like he was trying to get out of the way honestly. He is running with the 3rd team because he isn't earning his snaps in camp. He's a 7th rd pick!!!! He can and will be cut if he doesn't produce. They've cut higher draft choices.

I don't equate Holiman with a normal 7th rd pick. I think they believe he was a gem to be sitting there still and will be patient with him, a camp is not nearly enough time.

Tell me why you value him so high. I see him as a one year starter in college, with outstanding ball skills but has a gambler attitude and is a a non-factor in run support. In the NFL that gambler attitude can be used against him. There is a reason Every NFL team passed on him 6 times...some more than that. We have to be careful not to overvalue a player because of an outstanding stat line. Yes, 14 int's is impressive, but also limited in total evaluation.

Same reason you thought so highly of Yelden? IIRC in our mock draft, you felt his fumbles could be corrected, well I think its Holimans short comings can be corrected.

He's a ballhawk, which is greatly needed on this team.

Again we view things differently. Yeldon is a complete back with a slight flaw easily corrected with technique coaching. Holliman, while a one year wonder ballhawk isn't a complete safety. His flaws are more than slight technique adjustments. Its a heart thing, a time to overcome whatever fears he has that prevent him from attempting to hit/tackle, a much more difficult "flaw" to overcome/ coach up.

Also- you are correct in we do need defenders who can defend, create turnovers, and be trusted with his assignments.

It might not make a difference, but Holliman is at a weak position for us. I bet he at least makes the PS. I think the concensus was that he was a project with high upside... No reason to give up on him after one camp.

If Holliman is placed on PS some other team will grab him... i was reading tweets yesterday abt practice.. and Holliman was the only DB that even got close to getting a pick yesterday.. i kno thats nothing but all the other DB'S where allowing completion after completion... anyway i think he makes the 53 JMO

I would argue that teaching somebody tackling techniques is easier then changing somebodies running style. The heart thing is the real challenge, getting him to want to stick his nose in there. I believe they can.

Tackling is pretty substandard in the NFL today, its one thing for a team not wanting to take a risk using a draft pick on him but quite another for him to be served up on a platter ala the PS. I think he makes the team, his upside is too great. Still have 3 more games to make an impression too before having to decide his fate.

Rewind to draft day: there were some people calling for Holliman as early as our 1st or 2nd pick. I said I wouldn't touch him before the 6th. I hope he turns this around, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised if he washes out and doesn't make the final 53 or PS (though I think the PS is likely).

Holliman will get some in the stadium reps . If he wants to make the Team he will have to make some big plays . I think we need to be careful and not loose any future talent at that spot. I don't think Mitchelle or Shamarko are the answer .

Yeah, idk about Mitchell or Thomas either... I think it will be tough to cut some safeties outright since I view it as our weakest position. Besides those 2 we will keep 2 possibly 3 on the roster. Allen and Golden seem like locks, so if we keep 5 it will come down to Wild, Darby, Holliman, and Ventrone. If it were me, I'd keep Darby or Wild, PS the other one and Holliman and cut Ventrone outright.

    QB: Ben, Grad
RB: Williams, Archer, Harris*, Johnson - Harris sent to PS after Bell returns
WR: AB, Wheaton, Bryant, Coates, DHB, Goodwin
    TE: Heath, Spaeth, James
OL: Beach, Foster, Pouncey, DeCastro, Gilbert, Villanueva, Wallace, Finney

DL: Heyward, MacLendon, Tuitt, McCullers, Thomas, Walton
OLB: JJ, Moats, Harrison, Chickillo, Dupree
ILB: Shazier, Timmons, Spence, Williams, Garvin
CB: Gay, Allen, Boykin, Blake, Grant, Webb
S: Mitchell, Thomas, Allen, Golden, Darby

    ST: Hartley, Wing, Warren

PS: Chisholm*, Wild, Holliman, Van Dyk, Clear, Murphy, Fogg, Dieffenbach, Hemer, Zumwalt
(Chisholm released when Harris is sent down)

That's how I'd do it. They will probably keep Jones and leave off Darby or Webb.

All kidding aside, the thread was about the 53 man roster, which I said Bell will be a part of.

Now, during the suspension, does he not still occupy a spot on the 53 man roster? He won't be on the active game roster, but not all 53 are.

No, he doesn't occupy a spot on the 53 man roster. But I wasn't going to take your money anyway. ;)

I wasn't as hard on Him as you. My thoughts were Ed Reed wasn't the greatest tackling/hard hitting safety but he was great in reading the QB/ Offense and made at a on the ball. Maybe Holliman had some of those traits and once in camp he'd realize he would Have to hit and tackle. His technique could be coached up if he showed a desire to do it. HE HASN'T !!!

I stand by he'll be lucky to make the PS and even then once Bell returns he may be low man on the totem pole. It's not even close to how far ahead wild & Darby are of him.

Last comment on Holliman.... if he makes the 53..... IF.... he'd be the 5th safety.... he's only job this year would be ST where he MUST tackle.......something he seems afraid of doing. Ventrone would dominate him here..... if you're counting that's 3 safeties outplaying him for a presumed 5th safety position.

You have Walton as 6th DL. Did you notice Hemer against the Jags? Dude was hustling and playing his butt off. Loved the effort. I like how you left off Adams..... but that left us with only one b/u OT ..... other than Wallace who will be the 1st interior OL called into service if needed no one else is making a clear claim for that roster spot..... Finney/Hubbard...... someone please....

PS.... you like dyke over Palmer? No WR?

I don't see anyway Villenueva doesn't make this team. They have switched him to the right side now to see if he can be a swing tackle and he seems to be grasping it pretty quickly from what I've been reading.

Yep he will get cut and probably not make the practice squad some other Team will pick Hollman up and ask him to do what he does best. In a year or 2 I predict Holliman to be rated as one of the top in the game meanwhile back at the ranch Shamarko will be out of the NFL .

Holliman is just a true cover Safety he needs to be on a Team with solid Bump and Run CB'S , he needs to be on a Team that plays aggressive on the outside. The Steelers don't have the players nor do they have the desire as of yet . In our scheme the Safety spots are more like LB'S and that's exactly why our D is so soft.Weird statement , no not really. Passing attacks expose them which leads to more blitzes which leads to more space which leads to bigger plays. Both in the running game and the passing game.

I still contend the only way to stop the Spread and multiple WR sets is from the outside in. 5-5 CB'S who run 4.5 against 6-3 WR'S who run 4.3 is just not going to cut it.
