I was thinking last night that he definitely has a cannon. Really I'd say the majority of qb's in the league do though.

it just seemed effortlessly. that ball gets there in a hurry. usually no arc either. thats part of his problem in some cases. he could use a little more touch on some throws.

Actually Ben has said this year that he believes Wheaton will have a breakout year and be the most improved wide receiver.

People are perhaps overlooking Wheaton because of all the talk about Coates being the next Bryant, which kind of overshadows the other stuff that Wheaton can do. If Wheaton can play to some of the ability he showed last season, there's absolutely a place for his skills on the team.

Was it just me, or was Shayon Green out really early on defense? The big no.49?

He looked pretty bad in the first half. But I wouldn't have expected to see him on the field until the 3rd or 4th quarter.

You know I love how in the comments sections of some of these other sites, there are guys saying things that fly in the face of what everyone else was seeing. Some fool was commenting on how AV looked like hot garbage and didn't have good hand placement and was letting the pass rush get into the body while playing on his heels all game. What?! Every other commentary expert and armchair saw him with good footwork and hand placement only occasionally missing and using his strength to his advantage. The stupid was strong with that one....

I wasn't overly or underly too impressed with anyone, for the most part. Timmons looks like he is going to pick up where he left off. I thought Shazier looked pretty good. Initially, I thought his tackling was weak but it improved as he went on. Boykin will be starting by the time regular season rolls around. Archer has a lot more potential than I thought but needs to get longer cleats or something. I actually thought James did a decent job. Yeah he dropped a couple but I think that is an easy fix for him. That's all I got to say about that...

How in the world can one make these preceptions on 60 mins. of play barely into preseason. You can't get jello to jel in that time, tough fans or maybe just impatient. The only negative i gathered from this game was the Suisham decision which was totally unacceptabe. Nothing to prove nothing to gain in this backyard scrimmage that was going nowhere fast. knowing dam well he's the only kicker on the roster is beyond me! Discipline boys discipline! Lets give these boys some time along with encouragement. Game had some good and some bad but remember the function of PS is to weed and grow. Will be fine as the season progresses

What's everyone's take on Archer's running Sunday night? It seemed like nearly every time, he was swimming because his feet were too fast for his body. Maybe that wasn't it, but...somethin'. Trying really hard to make something happen? Trouble with the turf?

Maybe all of the above. Maybe he's been coached to run with his body lower, and he's adjusting his usual running style.

I would hope they've been working with him on things like how to make the tackler miss and create some space using his footwork, which he wasn't really doing last season.

Either way, there were a few moments when if he had just kept his feet for a moment longer, he would be gone for a huge gain. I think he's already shown more than he did the whole of last preseason.

This is, of course, the cue for him to now get injured for the season.

There has to be some kind of mechanical issue with his running. He just seems to have horrible balance at higher speeds.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Dri needs to take up some dancing or balanced yoga classes.

LJ had a good game considering his first game out with rookie receivers and not having much timing with them, he didnt throw any picks and a backup comes into games playing with the 1 receivers during the season, his numbers would obviously look better playing with starters instead of the green tomatoes he had on the field, he looked good to me he had a good feel for the pocket and did step into his throws contrary to some here claiming he didnt....

Jones did throw 1 INT. Some of the passes he threw way off. It didn't matter if a scrub or a HOF WR was trying to catch it, it wouldn't have mattered. He was off.

Yeah, you can't really put that one on the QB.

There were still a few iffy throws, and some that could have been picks with a sharper secondary, but like you say, we need to remember the receivers aren't necessarily running the sharpest of routes.

I still don't think LJ is Ben's heir apparent, but then I don't think he was ever meant to be. From what we saw in the game, he's progressed substantially, and that's something to be pleased about.

It occurred to me that as often as Archer was hit by the first guy on special teams last year that perhaps some of his stumbling came because he was EXPECTING to be tackled.....then when he wasn't touched, it was such a surprise, he wasn't sure what to do....
That may sound a little cynical, but I think the same thing happened to Landry Jones on one of the 'sacks.' He expected to get hit harder than he did, but he was already invested in getting knocked down so pretty much fell forward under his own weight and gravity....better safe than sorry I suppose when the pocket's collapsing, but you sure miss Ben on a play like that.

Agreed on the containment. One (very) meaningless preseason game doesn't tell much of a story, and don't get me wrong, I love to see aggressiveness drummed into a defense, but it's hard even in a meaningless environment to not have play-action flashbacks on defense which always seemed to kill us in key (and not-so-key) moments in recent years.

Tough loss on Suisham -- hard to fault the guy TOO much for playing football in a preseason game (goodness knows the Special Teams needed the support), guess if it was going to happen, better week 1 of preseason than week 5. At least Hartley will have some time to acclimate....

    GO STEELERS!
