I fail to see the benefit of hiring an analyst who has little knowledge about football, as stated ( That’s why Kassam is spending considerable time learning the game and the nuances of the scouting department.

The info provided is very valuable , but you don't want that guy to just be a stat guy you want him to understand the reason behind why a certain team tends to do a certain thing in certain situations . Does that mean the stat guy needs to be a Football Guru ? Not really but he does need some basic Football knowledge.

Evidently it's a math related project to determine a players predictability if he's drafted, it seems more like hiring a minority owners golf buddy so he can have a job to me...

It's like that football freakonomics thing - having a look at things people do just because it's "what you do in football", and seeing if they're actually effective.

Probably one of the best examples of using analytics was a guy called Clive Woodward, who ran the England Rugby team. He brought in some changes that nobody had really thought of doing, based on performance analysis, which led to them winning the World Cup by gaining a bit of edge on their opponents.

Sometimes that's the whole benefit - they can question why certain things that seem obvious or natural to those more familiar with the game.

Year 17 and Billy Beane still hasn't won a World Series or even the American League.

When the Steelers' salary cap is reduced to $10 million, I'll reconsider your post.

I thought analytics was for MLB and the NBA. Maybe this nerd can help the Steelers get ring #7 :roflmao:

The pats already have an "analytics and research" coordinator and his name is Bill. LOL. They should just ask him about some ways to gain a competitive edge. I'm sure he's already doing that right now. The next "gate" scandal is incoming. LOL.

No, but several other teams have, using his blueprint. He changed the game.

Todd Haley is a huge chess playing geek and told Mike Tomlin that he needs an unofficial assistant to help him manage the game better, or at least stay off the field. Formulas have to be developed to convince him to go for it on 4th and 2 while in FG range, down by 5 late in the 4th.

If this new guy can teach someone when to call a timeout vs. when to spike the ball, I say sign him to a 20 year contract.

Analytics can definitely help clear up the picture. As a coach I use them quite a bit to help teach kids their tendencies, weaknesses and strengths. It really helped me become a more well rounded and informed coach. But you can't rely 100% on analytics. It is just another avenue to try and help you become the best at what you do. Personally I think this is a very good move. Whether it truly pays off we may never know.

Using his blueprint and a crapload of money. In the past 15 years, only the 2003 Florida Marlins won a World Series while being in the bottom 1/2 of payrolls (#25). Of the remaining 15 winners, 9 were in the top 10 in spending. Teams are winning the same way that they did before Billy Beane.

This was a great move. I work in analytics myself and it's amazing the amount of information out there that can help managers (Coaches) manage their business (game) that would otherwise go unnoticed. Most of time it's correlations that you point out that makes everybody go hmmmmmm.

we lost our quality control coaches a couple of years ago. i believe we did add one though a year ago. we used to have one offensive and one defensive. our defensive guy moved to ilb coach. this can be a big help in game planning. teams do have tendencies on offense and defense. finding those helps us prepare for our next opponant and thats what we base alot of our gameplans on in those short mid week practices.
