It's that they keep carrying 3 QB's while other teams have gone to 2 and the perceived loss of developmental players because of the roster spot he takes up.

I was under the impression most teams carry three but in any case, Colbert/Tomlin would deserve the heat for that.

The trend has been 2 on the active roster with that third being on PS.

You may be right but I feel fans hate Jones because we spent a 4th rounder on him when we had a lot of other needs. I don't feel most fans really watch preseason or put the effort into watching a player's progress, instead want to join the hate bandwagon. I also think while we have BB most people don't feel we need another QB, never mind to draft one.

The whole Jones pick has been beat to death so I am not going to get in to that, but what I will say we have no idea what the front office thought. Listen when we drafted Jones we were having problems with the oline and while BB was in the prime of his career he was taking a pounding. So I will leave that one as to the front office trying to be a step ahead, glad BB never went down and the oline stepped up and we sit here and complain about this pick.............

I think they changed a rule a few years back which meant you could do that, when you couldn't before... could be wrong though.

    It's a risk, though. A big risk.

I don't know about Jones' development. 2 years isn't a huge amount of time for a kid to adjust to the NFL, given he wasn't top drawer talent. It would be good to see something this preseason, of course.

I agree with BF, though, that if people's hang up is carrying 3 QBs and not 2, then that's not really anything to do with Landry Jones at all.

Well, considering he's played well below the line so far in Pre-season.....

Look, at this point in his career, "He who shall not be named", was a way better QB than Jones.

Ben stepped in as a rookie and went 14-1. This fan base is spoiled and want to see at least a glimmer out of the back-up QB. We're so used to the back-up having at least been a starter in the league with at least some moderate success.

i have to say the kid has been under a heavy rush in preseason so far and it makes it difficult to gauge him. this year we should have some pretty decent players in front of him and around him on offense to get a better gauge of what he has learned so far. our depth is not all brand new now and if he still doesn't show well, then he probably never will. i think he will get his shot early and then we will move to taj and gardner.

That's the issue in a nutshell, I guess: the purpose of Landry Jones is unclear for many people, and so the criticisms levelled at him are not always fair. He clearly wasn't drafted to be a starter. The comparisons need to be with guys who have been drafted to initially hold a clipboard, and the pool needs to be wider than the one in a million picks like Brady.

With that comparison, mac is right that you need to look at the guys around him as well as his own play. With all that taken together, my guess is that he's still below where the FO hoped he'd be, but - going back to my initial point - some guys take a while to adjust. He seems to be doing better than anyone else they've brought in bar Ben and Grad, so until he's usurped, he's here.

This. He was drafted as a back up, I don't think Jones was picked as Bens successor by any stretch of the imagination. Expectations shouldn't be so high. He's not where he needs to be but he's had 2 preseasons with limited work. There's no such thing as a 4th rd bust, so if it takes him a while to get going, who cares and if he doesn't, who cares, as the list I posted points out, anyone else they picked would have had just as much chance as not panning out.

My issue with him is he stinks. If Ben goes down and grad is not #2. we done. The deal is. A turd is a turd and no mater what someone tells you. You can not pick one up by the clean end

LOL. Jack... The kid didnt impress me or a whole lot of other people his last year at OU. We didnt need him with our 5th (4B) pick in 2013. Just so many other needs at that time. I questioned the pick on draft day. And I still ask the STEELERS FO.......Why did we pick this guy? It wasnt to replace Ben we all know that. It wasnt to provide competition to Grad. SO why draft this kid?? IHNI

it was because we had two elderly guys that break things tripping over the stripes on the field. you then hope maybe someday the kid would be good enough to be your backup. you don't throw for nearly 17,000 yards in college and stink. well usually. it was time for some new blood in here. you take a shot and hope he improves. these draft picks don't come with warning labels.
you take a chance and worse case scenario is we cut him. best case is he turns into a good player above and beyond his draft status.

:this!:That was point in posting this not so much the 4th rd pick, but Landry being on the 53 man squad. If the Steelers get to the point where they have to play Landry at QB they're doomed.

Most teams are doomed if they have to play their 3rd string QB.

The anger is misplaced. I don't know what people expect Jones to do, "you know what Mr Colbert and coach Tomlin, I am taking up a roster spot, would you kindly cut me so these other fine men can make the team".

Well that would certainly make things easier. LOL. Also he could maybe give back the $11 he got as a signing bonus to help our cap situation. Honestly I like him as a person and think he's probably one of the more high character guys on the team and I consider that a positive.

A lot of concern over a 3rd string QB.

I was on Steelers home page lastnight surfing and came across this vid on OTA'S with Labriola and Crowley. They touch on Landry ref. his 3rd coming preseason along with the potential competition in the house. I'm sure many here have already viewed, but i found it interesting and fitting to the current post. Blast i know your meaning in context of your post but i put a different spin on it after watching the vid ref. "what he needs to do"

He also gets a little bluetooth thing to go in his ear as well. At least I'm pretty sure he does. I think he listens to music on his Ipod with it most of the time.

I figured they brought Gardner and the kid from BC in, hoping they can make it as a WR and the emergency 3rd string QB, then they could release Landry. Hines was the 3rd option during most of his years.

That's why he should be on the practice squad, no other team is going to claim him and put Landry on their 53 man squad IMO.

    Yup, practice squad QB's don't get picked up mid-season for a reason. Unlike say...DE's, OT's, OLB's, WR's and recently CB's.

    Especially with the expanded PS.
