I hope he watched The Clone Wars cartoon because it has really awesome stories in it as well. If you want to see another thing that is cooler than the prequels you should check out "Honest Trailers" on youtube. They are hilarious and actually pretty dang spot on. There's also a version of TPM called The Phantom Edit and it takes out a lot of what was lame about TPM and supposedly it is really awesome. I've never made the time to watch it. It's just a fan project from some dudes that were sick of George Lucas destroying the franchise they love so much.

I'm so glad I live 20 miles from downtown! The tickets for the annual geek-fest that is known as Comic con go on sale tomorrow. Should be a hectic 30 seconds! I think the reason I'm ambivalent to the whole Star wars lovefest is that it's such a fad. I enjoyed the first one but was over it an hour later. I was the same way about E.T. It was so big when it came out that I had a bumper sticker made that read, "Nuke E.T."

Fad? I don't get that, specifically speaking about the original 3, I loved the Star War movies because they were awesome, not because it was the cool thing to like.

You may not like them much, and sure there are a lot of people who don't care about Star Wars movies at all, but a fad? Star Wars is the exact opposite of a fad. A fad is something that gains enthusiasm and then disappears. Star Wars has held enthusiasm for meany years and still does for many, many people.

I call it a fad in that there is so much enthusiasm for it that many people go to see it that otherwise wouldn't because of peer pressure. "You haven't seen Star Wars? Duuuuude! Ya gotta see it!" Much like the Kardashians.
I understand that millions of people like Lucas' franchise. I just question why. I like the ride at Disneyland though.

LOL, I don't know about you but trailers are what make me want to go see a movie, not some guy saying dude you need to see this. :lolol:

I'm talking about when the movies first came out, when we were teenagers.

Yeah, the bits I've seen of the Phantom Edit are good - basically, Anakin says very little, but gives a lot of cold, hard stares.

I feel sorry for that kid in hindsight, his life was pretty much ruined after the film.

I'm not that old, TV's were invented when I was a teenager ;)

I think most people go to movies based off trailers more than word of mouth. It's certainly part of it but not wholly why Star Wars was so popular then. There wasn't even social media back then, all you had to go on was those 20 second trailers. But isn't that why you go to movies anyway? Because of hype? Whether it be from word of mouth or trailers?

I went to see it because my parents had just seen it with my aunt and uncle and they came home and decided that they needed to take me and my cousins to see it. I was 5 at the time. My parents loved the original Star Wars and when they took us kids to see it, we were hooked. I remember how cool I though the "gold robot" was when I first saw it. That's what I called C3PO until I saw it again a few weeks later and realized what his name actually was.

Sorry to stir up the nerd nest. I'm not immune to sci-fi love. I just happen to be a Star Trek guy. What I'd pay really good money to see would be a GOOD version of "Dune" and it's sequels/prequels. Not going to hold my breath on it though as it's way too complicated to make into only one 2-3 hr. movie. Maybe someone will do a mini-series.
Something about Lucas rubs me the wrong way.

Lucas rubs me tye wrong way too but Empire rubs me the right way. Lawrence Kasdan is what made it so great. Lucas is a great conceptualist but just has a harder time actually bringing it to the screen. John Williams is also a part of what makes Star Wars so excellent. I respect Trekkies and Trekkers for thei passion but the facts are that the production and overall package is just better on Star Wars. The music. The characters. The set pieces. The action sequences. The lore. The drama. It is just all better on Star Wars.

George's problem is that he seeks perfection when it is imperfection that makes it believable. Some tinkering did enhance the originals but some did not. In the prequels he should have been the creative force but left the writing and directing to others. I remember watching the bonus features on Revenge of the Sith and being flabbergasted that the epic fight between Obi-Wan and Anakin was less than a page where George writes then they fight.

As to the discussion of why we went to it as kids. I went because it fueled the imagination. It allowed us to believe there was more out there than just mile after mile of farm fields. You got the toys and recreated these fantastic battles. It just made everything seem possible. I remember using a fisher price tape recorder to tape the audio from when they played it on network TV and listening to the tapes over and over again. It was an awesome time to be a kid, before videos games got big, before cable TV, before cell phones and the internet, it was cool to play star wars.

Of course the effects were better in Star Wars. Trek debuted in '66 and Wars came out in '77. a lot of technological advances in 11 years. Better lore? apples and oranges. Trek was an episodic show. Very few associated storylines.
There wouldn't have been a Star Wars without the Great Bird of the Galaxy having gone where no man had gone before!
When Eddie Murphy does a stand up bit about Han Solo and a green b**ch, I'll re-think my opinion!:lolol:

I was saying that the Star Trek movies and Star Wars movies are not in the same league. Do you like all the movie and series or just certain ones? Some Trek fans like everything and some only like certain things. I will say that if I was gonna watch a Trek series it would absolutely be the first one though. I just think the movies are too cheesy. I mean I love campy movies but I just can't get in to Star Trek movies because I feel like they take themselves way too seriously.

The original series!! Anything with The Shat and Nimoy. NONE of the series with the bald guy. As for the movies, # 1 was boring, "Wrath of Khan" was the absolute best, "Search for Spock was okay, the mess with the whales was smarmy, enviromentalist nonsense........now J.J. Abrams is re-writing the whole thing (Lucas) Did he not ever see the original Star Trek pilot episode??
One of the reasons I like Star Trek is that, as the youngest brother in a house with one TV that only got 4 channels (UHF anyone?) we had to watch what my oldest brother wanted to watch!

Ah, that explains it, you're a trekkie nerd. Have little action figures of "The Shat" and Nimoy on your shelf? Its ok, you can admit it, you know BFT's room is littered with Star Wars stuff.

I wish I had original action figures on my shelf! That'd be worth some dough! My grandson's room is littered with Star Wars stuff too. I can't take any of that stuff seriously when there are Lego Star Wars characters out there!

See, that's one thing I don't understand. It doesn't have to bee (see above image) one or the other. I'm a bigger SW fan, but I really love the original Star Trek, too. My wife and I are watching through all of the original series episodes with our kids, and we're about halfway through season 3 right now. Kirk and Spock (the originals) were some of the best sci-fi TV characters to me. But there's no reason you have to like one OR the other when it comes to SW and ST.

And I agree, I'd love to see a better Dune. I liked the very first movie that was done, I thought the later series that was done around 2000 was ok, but I'd like to see somebody tackle it again with another mini-series.

See I've never watched the Abrams films but I've heard that you don't have to be a Trekkie or even a soft core fan to like them. That actually sorta rubs me the wrong way because I feel like Star Trek has such a devoted fan base that their fans actually deserve to be catered to. When people tell me you don't even have to be a fan to like it I don't really consider that to be like "true" Star Trek because I feel like Star Trek is a lot like jazz and sort of an acquired taste but once you do acquire the taste for it you are hooked for life.

Well, now that most of the original cast is dead, all that's left is the new franchise. At least there are reruns.
