You sure put a lot of faith in PS guys in the first quote?

Signing W.Allen for depth has is not going to keep us from drafting a safety if a good one is available. And for the 10,000th time, if they have a young draft pick or practice Squad guy who they feel has a lot of upside and and outplays Allen They'll cut Allen.
McCullers is a good example of the Steelers having faith in a young raw late round pick.

Who at safety has come along and outplayed Allen? Let me guess Dangerfield?

You complain about these young guys not getting a fair shake in favor of old vets. Again what young guy that didn't get a fair shake here went on to something great somewhere else? Those three you listed earlier was a joke.
You might be able to dig up a name or two over the last 15 years, but the percentage is so small it's not worth the risk.

haven't we witnessed enough of the keeping old players around too long? allen was nothing more than an old backup, now he's a must have? really? look at his stat from playing here, nothing we can't live without. Mitchell and now Thomas are veteran enough to play in this system at this point and veteran enough to play in a new DC's system. yes, glenn for a team with no depth at DE and not much depth on the O-line, those draft picks and PS players that I named were being groomed for our depth, now we are starting over with nothing behind our starters. we sure didn't grab any free agents for depth so where will the depth come from if not from them or the draft?

What in the world does Will Allen have to do with depth at DE? It's not like they used an extra roster spot for him. Whether it was him a free agent or a rookie you still have a safety in that roster spot.
I'm not sure where this myth that old players are taking spots from young players comes from. It's an older veteran player gets outplayed by a young guy then the young guy will get the playing time. It's as simple as that. I'm still trying to figure out what young guy got cut in favor of keeping an old veteran And the young player went on to have a great career or even a very solid career?
Of course there's the rare example of what happened with Troy. We probably held onto him a year too long. But I have no problem with doing that for a legend with the resume of Troy.
I'll be waiting for that list Mac, but I won't be holding my breath.

So I guess we won't be getting proof that your point of view is valid?

Sorry Mac, but I think you're obstinately clinging to a very difficult position to defend. For reasons I've stated above, resigning Will Allen to a small contract was a very smart thing to do given our uncertainty at the safety position. Is he a star? No. However, he gives us a veteran who can get the job done for another year if needed. I just don't see the downside, especially since we need to add another young safety to the mix anyway.

:this!: If one of the young guys are ready to step up and take his job, they will, but I'd rather have Allen there in case they can't step up and then have no one to fall back on.

Let's not forget that a whopping $80k of his 1 year contract is guaranteed. We aren't limited to 53 roster spots right now. So if indeed some young players beat him out, then he gets cut and we eat $80k in dead money - chump change for the risk mitigation that signing him provides. To me it was a no brainer.

i guess but still think we could get that kind of production from a traffic cone over that many games, and the traffic cone could play special teams better.
