will Johnson had good upside. Mauro. Williams our draft pick of a couple of years ago who according to our d-line coach was getting better. that's two draft picks (5th and a 7th) gone plus a positive DE pickup that's playing pretty good in arizona.

thats just last year. all 3 could be good depth that we could use this year and now we have none at those spots. we basicly handed 3 teams players we need for nothing and two of those were draft picks. we can't afford to give away draft picks. we can't afford to bring players along to just give to other teams when we have no depth behind our starters. we sure could have used everyone of those players this year. thats not even counting who we may draft this year. we only have so many spots for new players. are you really happy with w.allen, mitchell, thomas and golden as our safeties this year? how about cam thomas as our depth at DE? how about mike adams as our LT if beachum goes down protecting bens blind side? we lost 3 good prospects because there was no room at the inn.

I don't want to say I don't like WA, being a buckeye fan, but the age thing is my problem with this. I thought we were over the over 30 group of signings. we need young playmakers back there to start getting us some turnovers and speed and athleticism over knowledge.

He sounds like an interesting possibility...
It sucks, tho, that nowadays, I have to ask, "Could his biggest strength be his biggest liability?"...

I absolutely LOVE to see hard hits, and devastating tackles!

Unfortunately, nowadays, it seems the league doesn`t.

According to the article, and videos include, his "bone jarring" hits, are his biggest attribute.

Used to be, I would LOVE that...

NOW, I have to worry if it would lead to excessive penalties, even if he "lowered his target area", as the article suggest...

The first gif in the article, would DEFINITELY be flagged as "helmet to helmet" in the NFL, right now...

    Crying shame...

10 years ago, he would be PERFECT for us...

    NOW...

I gotta wonder if it`s better to go after someone with better technique, but "punishes" the ballcarrier/reciever, less...

    Thanks a lot, Rodge...:bscow::rant:....

    GO STEELERS!

p.s., Yes I agree with signing Will Allen, although, I can understand the "low risk/ low reward" argument.

    :steelflag:

While I agree it sucks that some "maybe" gems got picked up from our squad, I ain't gonna cry over it just yet. Maybe down the road but not right now. Pitt seems to defy the law of averages in knowing what they're doing even if they have a hiccup or 3 here and there. As far as the draft, I ain't holding my breath but I think they may go safety first pick and get the kid from BAMA. At this point Id be okay with that.

Mac I know you are trying to prove a point but who are these quality guys that they lost that just can't be replaced? Josh Mauro? Total of 5 games he played with the Cards, two of them starting with 5 tackles and 1 pass defended. Nick Williams? 2 games played no starts and no stats, Wes (Munch's) Johnson? zero games played, zero games started and zero stats. Now I know that they showed promise and could have been great in support and that stats don't tell the whole story however two of these guys were rookies so their time with the team was small and correct me if I'm wrong but Williams spent his first year with Pittsburgh mostly on the injured list. So in terms of time in system they wouldn't have much more than a rookie or FA brought in this year. Am I comfortable with any of the backups you mentioned? Heck No, not even close but at this point we could wring our hands about what might have been with some guys that were good in camp or concentrate on who is going to step in. If Wes Johnson couldn't get on the field for a very poor Jets team I am not going to lose sleep about letting him get away and only having Adams as a potential swing tackle. Mauro is the only one that I might regret because he showed he has a motor but BA snagged him and now has to protect him or hey we could snag him back.

it doesn't matter about the PS guys. any new player we may even try to get , will allen will be taking a place of. PS, FA, draft pick etc.. he will be 33 years old when this season starts. here are his must have stats as a steeler.

    74 games
    59 total tackles
    0 sacks
    3 forced fumbles
    4 passes defended
    1 interception

if we saw these stats on any other player out there at his position and his age would you think this is a must have player?

I don't really know what more needs to be said that hasn't already. I've just come to the conclusion that you're thinking on this subject is flawed.

I'm thinking you assumed young talent meant practice squad players and ran with that glenn. that is not what I said, you did. you brought up the PS scrub thing. will allen is not that good of a player face it. there is absolutely no need to have him at his age and talent level. he doesn't make us better. we need to be better and that is not flawed thinking by any stretch of the imagination.

Who were you going to have back there at safety? We've got Mitchell and Shark, who are both unproven (other than Mitchell's one good season), and Golden who has not proven that he can deliver the goods after a few years of opportunities. Will Allen gives us a vet who can step in at EITHER free or strong safety. We're a contending team. Contending teams have to stock their rosters with players who can help them win. Will Allen can help us win. OK, so having him means that one of your no-names that you insist is the next JH needs to go to the practice squad. Oh well.

this is where the misconception is still going on elvis. I never once said a practice squad player is being held back by allen. don't you think we should draft someone? how many safeties can we keep? if will allen is here and golden is here as the ST's stud, how will we get a draft pick on the field at safety? we only dress 45 guys. if will allen is all we needed to contend then we didn't need Mitchell evidently. if will allen makes us contenders we are in serious trouble. this practice squad thing was all glenn twisting what I said and putting words in my mouth. I guess young guy means PS.

I'm saying bye bye Golden. Yes, we should draft someone, and it's not likely that the someone will be ready to step in day 1. Will Shamarko be ready? Will he stay healthy? Will Mitchell grasp his responsibilities in year 2, or will he continue to earn the nickname I gave him last year - Mitchell two-step (as in 2 steps late to the ball)? There are lots of unknowns. The free agent safety market wasn't exactly buzzing with studs this offseason. There were a few has beens and a few more never beens, but nobody worth bringing in and teaching a new system to. So yes, Allen makes us better by providing veteran experience in our defense. I don't even see why you'd debate it unless you're ready to have all 4 safeties be guys with big question marks.

I said last year Mitchell needs to play SS. that's what he is. I'm still of the thinking that we need a ball hawking FS. draft pick? yea why not. shark may or may not be a FS, but I think he's more in line with SS or nickel back at this stage. he's capable of those two positions. golden was a wasted pickup too. one or the other, will allen or golden have to go for some young blood and young blood can't play if they are not dressing. if all we wanted was vet depth we could have kept troy. lets not forget we have a new DC which kind of nullifies will allens knowledge of DL's system. as has always been said also is the fact all steeler safeties know both safety spots.

So, let's agree that Golden is the odd man out. That leaves us with Mitchell, Shark, a draft pick and Allen as the just-in-case vet. In that context, he provides us with value as a guy who we know will perform at a solid level if needed.
