Good signing. Basically a no brainer.

    (This is your year, Shamarko!)

I frankly hate this signing. he's old, can't make it anywhere else and isn't that good. now he will keep any young talent off the field. oh well, same ol chit. might as well sign larry foote too. one step forward and three steps back. good old KC.:cool:

Agreed, on both counts. I loved the Shark pick and been looking forward to seeing what he can do and Allen did a nice job, good insurance policy. If things pan out, won't need him to play much.

Who is being kept off the field by this signing? Some practice squad scrub?
Fact is no promising player is going to be held back because of this signing. If there's a safety who has potential to be a quility player for us then he'll be given the chance to unseat Allen.

to be honest glenn we are in safety hell right now on this team. we are only going to keep so many db's total. so yes WA will take a spot from a young guy. WA played well, but did he? we used him to help a corner on one side of the field in a high low scenario. that's two db's to do the job of one corner. we also gave up the most plays over 25 yards of any team in the league last year. that alone shows our safety help was lagging. I stand by my statement that I don't like this signing but I figured it was coming. I don't believe he has the range we need and we will never find out what is possible if we keep trying to play it safe with these type of safety shield signings. we can call these practice squad guys scrubs all day but one we have was pretty darn good in college and as we know james Harrison was once one of these practice squad scrubs until he got a chance to get on the field. :smiley1::cool:

I'm just glad we didn't lose him. He's decent, knows us, and inexpensive. Why wouldn't you sign him?

I have mixed emotions on this signing. I think he is good for depth , but I do agree he is not what's needed. Does he keep us from attacking the position the way we should ? Does he keep a guy with skills off the 53 man roster ? This is what I worry about? Being so comfortable with a Vet and not knowing what the young guys can do .

Similar to Shamarko we have no ideal whether he can play at a good level in the NFL the Team choose the Vet and made him a healthy scratch or relegated him to ST'S. When I look at it like that I can feel Mac's pain.

What player that is so great are we cutting to make room for W. Allen?

All the moaning over Practice squad players and third stringers that get cut or signed by other teams is mostly all for not.
For the Steelers how many of these guys went on to great careers for another team? 1 or 2 out of countless guys?
You have to field the best team you can each year.
Trust me the Steelers aren't getting rid of any special talent to sign W. Allen. And if any player comes along in camp that the team feels can be a productive player for us they'll cut Allen.

I've been guilty of being overly attached to PS guys but starting to come around on that. Maybe 1% of these guys ever go on to do something meaningful. I'm going to keep track of Mauro, he's the last guy we lost that I was upset about, see if he turns into anything special.

PS is a long way from being good enough for the NFL, if you do enough good things, maybe you'll crack the 53 and even then, you still aren't guaranteed to get a helmet on Sunday, aka, Moye. Justin Brown was another guy who I liked and he actually made the 53 and played 8 games before being cut. I'm not worried about Will Allen keeping us from finding a diamond in the rough.

Blanchflower is my current hopeful PS guy, see how that plays out.

I have no problem with the signing, Allen probably shouldn't be a starter though.

Dick's gone now. Let's see if that changes the insistence of only using vets all the time, even when a young guy should have seen the field. Dick lamented young players.

I used to think Justin Brown had potential, but alas, he didn't make the cut. When you see what someone like Bryant can do as a rookie, you realize Brown just wasn't good enough to play. Even more so with Moye, who is your classic patsy white guy from PSU that they give opportunity for because he "works hard." Well, working hard is nice, but give time to more guys with actual talent, please.

I'd hate to see a guy that was drafted and was showing some real potential get cut to sign Allen. No reason to keep a guy just because he's young and no reason to sign a guy just because he's a veteran. You sign/keep a guy because he can improve your team and give you a better chance at success.

I'm starting to think that Will Allen must be Tomlin's illegitimate son or something. LOL. They are always talking about how much Tomlin loves him on Cooler Talk and shows like that during the season. He's a solid guy but no Troy for sure.

since we will be drafting some cb's hopefully and we tendered Robert golden and we have Mitchell and Thomas already and now will allen, how much room will be left for new guys? not just PS guys but draft picks. we did have like 7 safeties on the team last year but they didn't play very well, so I guess we better hit with 1 pick at corner and 1 pick at safety to make the team because unless we are cutting somewhere else off the defense than we will be out of room for anymore. I think we are finding out we lose good ones off of trying to hide them on the practice squad. this is my thinking about bringing back a very mediocre safety like will allen. it's just not about some scrub off the PS, even though they may be better than allen or golden. heck we lost a good O-lineman trying to do this and both guys that were our future depth at DE to boot. I also want to say we have probably one of the better groups of talent out of these futures picks than we have had in awhile, and I do think several could make our squad out of this group. the bar isn't real high on defense at this point, nor is it that high past the starters on offense.
