Live by the sword, die by the sword. What an incredible decline for what it looked like a great player. Got paid and got big. And off injured.

They will be fine this year, next year the Woodley money will be off the books just in time. With the Ben signing and the Heyward extension this will be eaten up quick.

The Needle and the Spoon is my fav Young song. It's one of the ones I use when a copy is required.

I know a Little is my Skynyrd fav.

I'm trying figure out how the song connects to the problem. It's not like Woodley is a junkie as the song s about. Just a bad contract decision and hopefully a lesson learned from the Steelers FO.

    By the way.

Best Skynard Song is Ballad of Curtis Loew.

Just that when I saw that dead money hit, I was taken back by such a large hit for a player not even here. Damage. We could have got the top CB out there for that. What a bum that dude was after he got paid.

Couldn`t blame them for paying Woodley what they did, when they did...

He was playing like a beast, at the time....

Hindsight is always 20/20, and that definiteley was a mistake, looking back...

But I see no way their "crystal ball" could have predicted what was to happen.

8million plus, against the cap, THIS year, blows my mind, tho... OUCH...

As for the Music, Yeah, "Curtis Lowe" is a fantastic song, and one of my faves, but I`m personally more partial to the heavier stuff from them, like the previously mentioned "Give me back my bullets", or "Saturday night special"...

No problem with Neil Young, "Rockin in the free world", either, tho...

Ronnie Van Zant, acknowledged that the whole "Southern man don`t need him around anyhow", lyric was just a joke, in an interview, after the song was made,...

But it felt a bit disingenous, to me... What else was he gonna say???

This northern born boy has a southern heart, and loves them southern rockin bands!!!

    GO STEELERS!!!

The Needle and The Spoon is actually a Skynyrd song on Second Helping. LOL. I knew what you meant but just found it ironic that you made that slip. I Know A Little is great too. Steve Gaines is actually the best player ever in Skynyrd really. At least he is very close to Ed King.

Yeah RVZ was actually a huge fan of Neil Young. My buddy was just in Jacksonville and went to visit RVZ's grave and took his Les Paul and played Free Bird at his grave. He also visited Leon Wilkeson's grave as well. Gary and Ed are the only two originals left and they hate each other. I used to talk to Ed King a lot on AOL when I was a teenager. He was a SUPER nice guy. His name on there was "Humbuck54" and he was really patient with all my young teenage fanboy questions. LOL.

I am not saying I faulted them at the time of his new deal. Coming off a Super Bowl, you do everything within your power to take another shot at one, and keeping your stars is usually how to keep your chances best for adding another ring. You can't blame them for that. And I am not. I am just blown away with him still hitting our cap two years after he was even on the team, is all.

Still, $8,580,000 is a lot of dead money. Imaging what you could buy in FA with that?

Yea, LS has a bar at Jax Beach, Freebird Live (used to be FB Cafe). It's a really cool area, right at the beach. Great area to bar hop.

Actually for Woodley I think my favorite LS song applies. As soon as he got paid, Woodley said "Gimme Three Steps" towards the door.

Actually we all know the injuries didn't help, but personally I think there were things there that should have given the Steelers pause to give him the whopping contract that they gave him:

    (1) Woodley was never a complete LB...good bull rush guy but his lateral movement was never good which meant he often did not seal the edge on runs and really could never pursue guys either - and it shows too as he averaged in the neighborhood of 2/3 the tackles that Harrison would get

    (2) Woodley never had a chiseled frame, he was always overweight - obviously much worse in later years

    (3) This is primarily just guessing on my part, but it just seemed to me that Woodley like Worilds this past year got a lot of sacks/pressures against poorer competition like a TE, RB, coming unopposed compared to the way Harrison would have to work against a good or decent LT

Being that most of his game was bull rushing, I was fine with his original level of weight during his first contract. He was a little bulky but he got the job done. But when he turned into a fatty, that was just inexcusable. Other coaches would not have let that fly; I was pissed that Tomlin did. Can you see a Parcells or Coughlin allowing that? No way.

Yeah - I think you are pretty much right and Woodley did a good job at what he was good at...that bull rushing LB. I never thought he stunk or anything, he was actually a good player, but when you pay the type of money the Steelers did for him you should be getting more of a whole package and Woodley wasn't that. To me Harrison was that, he was a great pass rush guy, good against the run, moved laterally fairly well - the only thing Harrison couldn't do was drop in coverage on a TE.

Yea, Woodley was good at one time, James was GREAT. And he just wasn't built to cover, but what he did offer was super valuable for this team: create havoc and dish out punishment causing fear.

My thoughts exactly. I was shocked when we busted the bank on him. He got a lot of help from the guys around him. Porter used to make my blood boil in the end of his time here. He would play paddy-cake and just stand there most of the game and then choose his moments to give his all. I was thrilled when we got rid of him and started Harrison. I remember stating on the old board, "start James harrison and he's going to the pro bowl". I think Harrison is my favorite Steeler of all time. But i could go on for days...
