JJ's got two of the best Steeler OLBs of all time to learn from so I sure hope he's able to take the next step. The eyes of Steeler nation will be upon him.

Absolutely. It's definitely a key part of the equation.

I agree. I don't think the Steelers are nearly as worried about JJ as the fans are. I'm sure they are disappointed that they lost a years development but I think they have full confidence in him.

I put that in for you :lolol:

I dont know what percentage their confidence is at but I know from what the coaches and Colbert have said that it reflects the same things I and others have said about JJ. I see progress, I thought he played very well before he got hurt this season and I see no reason why that won't continue.

The injury was real unfortunate, big set back.

I'm rooting for him to have a breakout season but I remain skeptical. I know that surprises you. :lolol:

Good deal. He showed last year that he can still be disruptive. A nice insurance policy and hopefully he rubs off on the kid they bring in.

Well I was wrong. Thought they would wait after the draft closer to camp. Glad to see James Harrison back. The presence that he brings is without parallel. Attitude and work ethic. Starter i'm not sure of. Keeping him fresh for the year to be a monster in the playoffs is what I would like to see. Situational pass rusher, mentor. Colbert calling out Jarvis Jones was surprising but not to most here. Big year for Jarvis although I don't blame him for the set back injury last season. He was coming on and I expect him to do the same this season. I feel a CB will be the 1st pick this year. And a trade up. They will draft an OLB later and hopefully Shawn Lemon surprises, eh.

    I love that photo!

I'll call this a great signing. He'll actually play this year, and maybe come back for next season if more mentoring needs to be done.

A $1.75 million-ish cap hit for a quality OLB and leadership is quite the bargain.

As others have noted, this is a bargain. Also, as I have written before, Harrison is 37 but the guy didn't really start getting significant minutes until he was around 28 - so he has less miles on that 37 year old body than others. The guy also keeps himself in incredible shape. Obviously at his age any injury can be harder to recover from, but I guess I view him as an 05 vehicle with 80K to 90K miles on him not 120K to 130K.

Agreed, some will point out that he was injured last year, so was our 2 first rd picks and he still played more then they did.

Wear and tear is one thing ... and age is another. Age will rob you of reflexes, quickness, speed, and explosiveness of all kinds regardless of wear and tear.

I completely agree. There could be a large fall off from Deebo this upcoming year....but when you look at past history and most importantly his recent history you have to like his credentials...especially from a VALUE standpoint. I have read some of your posts before and you and I seem to be in agreement that holding onto to players too long is not a good idea especially when you are paying out a large salary and pushing back the pay dates on the guaranteed money and that it can hurt you badly down the line from a cap standpoint.

But this signing is very cap friendly and you are bringing back the guy who was your most productive OLB. It just seems like a no-brainer.

Not only that, but he came in very out of shape and had to work his way back; by season's end he was much better than when he first started playing. This season he will come in, already in shape, ready to rock. He will be our best LB, for better or worse. Will that not say much about JJ and Shazier? Maybe. But it is what it is.

All of that is true. However, even with that being the case he stands a pretty good chance of being our best option at ROLB in 2015. Now, that may say some less than stellar things about the rest of our OLBs and our front office for allowing things to get to this point, but in terms of what made sense to do this offseason, I think he was the best option.

Dont think that will happen. JJ would get overpowerd on runs to that side. You need a bigger linbacker on that side as teams like to run to their right more. Starting OLB next year is Harrison on right side and Moats (until they get someone better) on the left side. JJ will probably back up both OLB positions.

I oppose keeping declining old guys around even on minimum deals. If I'm looking at 2 players (1 old & 1 young) that both are unlikely to be productive for you past the current year (if that), it is wiser to choose the young player every time. However unlikely to develop, the young guy has potential upside. The old guy is staring into an abyss. Not only is he out of upside, but even a run of the mill injury can effectively end his career.

It's not just a financial decision, it's about a roster spot. Think of it this way, had the Steelers kept a 32 year old Jason Gildon around at the veteran minimum for the 2004 season, James Harrison maybe doesn't ever happen. We would've had Porter, Haggans, Gildon, Alonzo Jackson heading into his 2nd season ... and Deebo at OLB.

harrison is still twice better than any of olb we have on the roster .. if you want to have a chance to pressure the qb deebo is the man
till we find one better harrison has a roster spot

The difference is that Harrison will likely start. With Porter and Haggans we were pretty set with starters at the position. We are not in the same situation, and as a team that aspires to make noise in the postseason we need to have the best possible players, even if they need to use Geritol as a workout supplement.

I don't see any of our young talent being held back because Harrison is on the team. JJ is going to get another shot to start. If we draft a 1st or 2nd round OLB they will get minutes. Right now Harrison is the best OLB on the team - to bring that back at a little over $1M is a bargain and worth the risk even if he doesn't play a down in the 2015 season.

I'm for anyone that helps this team further it's chance for a W each and every game. From what I saw last year Harrison fits that criteria. This old man sure made trouble for Young defenses and for cheap?!?!?

Anyone can suffer a career ending injury @ anytime. Young, old, Practice squad, off the field, working out, it happens. James number comes up and the cost is negligible. Compare that with the cost of a young higher end draft pick and the gulf is huge.

Careless if he's drinking geritol shakes after nap time as long as he pressures that QB like last year.
    Suit him up.
