a ridiculous notion. MTs first pick will retire a Steeler.

So let's just say Shazier turns into the ILB he could be and Williams and Spence continue to develop none of you would consider cutting Timmons to save a bunch. I know I would. IF Williams continues to develop like he has him and Shazier would be the perfect combo for the inside.

In that scenario I think you have to weigh how much you are willing to pay to keep Timmons against what Spence's 2nd contract will be as well as Williams and then Shazier. He may very well be a cheaper option or someone they have to cut just because of deals that have to be done.

I'd hate to see him go, but yeah business speak wise... He may be expendable. We're loaded inside and that don't boast well for him in today's game. This next season will answer that question I assume.

    With you on this one.

On the plus side of the issue, this means he may have an even better year!

I think he needs to get a little of his speed/quickness back. I don't like him calling the plays though. When he does it looks like he losses his own recognition.

I like Williams and Spence but neither are on Timmons level and I don't foresee that jump in one more year. You dont get rid of your best player on defense. And the cap is projected to go up, they wont be in any kind of cap hell that they'd be forced to make a move like that. You also need depth, has our current situation proved nothing?

It could happen. He'll be in his 30s, a linebacker that relies heavily on athleticism. He'll be making bank, and we might have young, cheaper options available. As of now there's a big dropoff from Timmons to those options, but that dropoff could get smaller in 2015.

Why though? He will only be 30 in 2016 and his cap hit actually goes down from its 2015 number. He also becomes a UFA after the 2016 season... No reason at all to cut him. None. Let's not get too cute with the cap... Especially with our best defensive player (and only defensive pro bowler).

The real question is what we should do with him after that 2016 season, but there is way too much that can happen between now and then to begin to speculate. I'd say if you're set on extending him and lowering his cap number, cool. Sign him until he is 32-33 and make it so that he is very easy to cut in the final season if his game starts to go. Otherwise, just let him play out his contract and go from there.

As said above, it could change in a year. Right now we have a pro bowl guy vs a guy who has difficulty making open field tackles and a guy that has shown little more that mediocrity. To me that doesn't equate to options.

As thorn058 alluded to, this is Spense's last year under contract, and Williams could be gone the following year. Timmons stays until at least one of these backups proves capable, AND signs a new contract.

Yeah, but if one of those guys proves capable of replacing Timmons with little dropoff, they could be re-signed to a much cheaper contract than that of Timmons, and of course play longer.

I'm a Timmons fan and I always have been. Just sayin' it's possible. He could also be traded, if we were a team that did trades.

Timmons ain't going no where (yes I said aint)....he's the best leer we got. He will restructure or extend. Khan is the greatest cap buster in the league. He's a Brilliant numbers guy!

If history has taught us anything, it's that Lawrence Timmons will be around for at least another 8 years. Maybe longer if he's willing to play for the veteran minimum. It won't even matter if he can tackle anymore. As long as he can stay on the field, we'll keep putting him out there.

Spence needs to worry about keeping his job. He's a great story and he did OK when he played ... but just OK. I'm not sure that he's a lock to make the roster this season.

They'll cut him or wont resign him when the time is right, like they do with everyone.

His jobs not in danger, last year was essentially his rookie year, he did pretty well, no reason not to believe he won't improve upon it. Garvin is the one I expect to get cut this year.

Yeah, I laughed out loud when I saw your list. I guess maybe you can say Ike but his was more a situation of not having anyone to replace him with and actually would have been cut if he didn't take a major discount. So no, cant really even say him.

Did you really put Bus on the list? :lolol:

And Batch? A 3rd string QB? Really? Whom by the way, came in and beat Baltimore after not playing in like 5 years.

Farrior was never flashy but pretty solid, even when let go and it showed on the defense.

Smith was still a force when healthy, unfortunately the injuries started mounting. I can't blame them for wanting to see if the injuries would cease, he was that good.

Ward? The only problem I had with him was it was painful watching guys T off on him but in 2010 he had nearly 800 yards, why the heck would they cut him? They cut him when they should, after the following year when he didn't even amass 400 yards.
