I just spewed this out in another thread a few minutes ago. We're a notch above an actual small market team with only history and hardware and a few player acknowledgements on our side anymore.

Thankfully we we don't over pay for ass hats, but it hurts not to be able to play the game as it stands now.

weve been very successful and have been very recently in football lore, but these crazy contracts further remove our style from the swinging trend of the league. Both Competitively speaking and as a fan being to attend these events.

i hope the moral approach continues to pay off for sure, but it's getting a lot harder to do with prima Donna players that have no morals/no remorse.

But hey who can blame em? We're the idiots that finance it all. That is what in this day and age endures me to the steelers, but I know ultimately, that those those days are numbered.

everybody loves to be here loves to play here etc... So long as their ass is overpaid and feeling whatever love it is they desire.

We we settled for Moore and Mitchell, because honestly they are all we can afford. They might think they're this or that and segments of their tape may suggest they are, but regardless of what them or their agents believe, they ultimately know.

Sure, every now and then you get someone who pans out like a Clark, or farrier or Von oelhoffen or the bus that either way you get them, it just works.

    Getting harder to do
my friend and the hills getting steeper

I don't think you'd convince Ben, Troy, Harrison, Woodley, and AB that we're a bunch of cheapskates. The philosophy is just that you build from within and not from without. In today's NFL it's hard to have a roster of superstars. Free agency took that away. The only way teams have tons of stars is if they draft them and get a few good years out of them at a bargain. We celebrate the 70s more than probably any franchise in sports but the fact is that if FA had existed then the team would have looked much different. There would have been no way to retain all those guys and stayed within the cap.

Must have been rough for you not to be able to complain about anything all this time, Steel :smiley1:

This shouldn't be surprising to anybody who is a Steelers fan. I'm glad they aren't throwing exuberant contracts at FA's that will likely never live up to it. Get these high priced guys out of the way and then we'll see what they do.

That being said Blast I would like some news on guys that are on their radar. They don't need flashy expensive Free Agents that don't fit the Steeler way but they do need to add to the roster and there is quality to be had at reasonable prices.

I agree, and trying to do so without going over board with the cheapskate thing I think.
Free agency has killed a lot of good that teams can possibly wield, but then again a team like us or the Pats make that a hard arguement to have. However, the change with rookies is, unless you get someone that can crack the lineup and be successful in 1-2 years coupled with the fact that they enjoy HERE above B.S. Elsewhere the League and it's rules will increasingly become harder on our team and teams of the same financial ilk.

And for the record, I like how we do things... But how long can we do it for in a money driven league? I still have an old sports magazine from the 80s that listed us as one the cheapest teams (it used hoge's salary for reference) and I've seen what has transpired since. Not overly worried that we can't transcend time and trend again, but I don't know how much longer the rules will allow for it.

As Mallory said to James Bond in Skyfall: "It's a young man's game.

The Steelers brought in two "decent" FA WRs, Moore and Hayward-Bey. By mid-season, they were smoked by Wheaton and Bryant, two younger receivers.

The NFL is more and more becoming a three-and-done league for most players. By the time players hit free agency, they're easily replaced by cheaper rookies. Back in the day, you never saw rookies starting so much. Now, it's the norm.

I think the Steelers are smart by not jumping into free agency. Now days you don't build through the draft. You don't have time. You "rebuild" through the draft.

A look at the Steelers cap shows that they are far from cheap. Misguided spending perhaps but not cheap.

Or how about "spending up to the cap on your own players doesn't mean a thing unless you throw stupid money at other teams' players"

I guess you missed the great pick ups of Jeff Hartings, James Farrior, and Ryan Clark over the years.

You don't score with every free agent deal, plus we don't have cap room to blow. We need Ben, A. Brown, and Bell locked up for our future.

With the cap requirements you can't be cheap. So the whole premise of this posts title is incorrect.

No. For every $60 million guaranteed you give a guy, you have to have 6 subpar vet minimum guys to offset that contract. Jeh1856 is correct. We may not always make the correct choice ( Woodley), but the Steelers have a good money to championship ratio. Better than all but 1 team, I believe. And we do not have all the asterisks of that team.

Listen, it's not a mutually exclusive thing: The Rooneys are not always cheap, with agreeing to pay top $ to its best players. But they ARE cheap in other areas, you can take that to the bank, so to speak. I know that in the old weight room at 3 Rivers, they had benches tore up, with foam sticking out that they would "fix" with duct tape and the "budget" for the weight room was only $100 a year. Now, does that not sound "cheap" to you? So you'll have to excuse me if I don't think some of their FA approach is not related to them not wanting to spend $. I agree that it is not wise to be the biggest spender in FA, and we have seen that proven many times with teams like the Skins never getting any good even though they often spend big. But, unless you are merely trying to avoid spending $, it seems that we should sign a few upper (not top) tier FAs once in a while, but we almost never do. I would prefer if we would at least sign some good FAs like the Pats do. They don't go wild in FA but they pick and choose their spots and do sign some upper players sometimes, and all it did for them last year was win the a ring. Had they not signed those two corners, would they have won it all? I don't think they would have.

They aren't cheap, they just prefer to re-sign their own like Pouncey, Cortez, Ben, Gilbert they got big money. You don't want to be like the Redskins used to be spending all that big money on washed free agents.

Im glad we resign our own as a priority, but some of that has made a mess of things. The jury is out on Tez... Gilbert is a head scratcher though he may turn a corner and become consistently ok. Things like Woodley and others have killed the pay roll... I appreciate loyalty when they pony up for it but it usually bites us in the rear. And we have a problem with ponying up to the wrong party at times.

If the Steelers are cheap why are they always juggling to get under the cap? There's a guy on the radio here that was always saying that the Steelers are cheap. I called him and asked him to look at how much cap room the Steelers had and which free agents they'd let go that had monster careers somewhere else. The answer was not much and not many. I haven't heard him say that since.

Mitchell didn't exactly come cheap - certainly not for what he produced.

Do you think spending up to cap is the end-all discussion in them being cheap or not? Trust me, they are cheap in other areas. Also, you HAVE TO SPEND 89% of the cap or you are punished. Just because you spend up to the cap limit isn't the trump card for proof of not being cheap, ever.

They generally keep the guys they want to keep. Spending like drunken sailors is no guarantee of success. I don't care what else they spend their money on as long as they keep winning. Generally they have and the fall off in performance isn't related to not spending it's related to drafting and some bad spending.
