But if he stayed we'd still have the player.

None of this is life or death. Not sure what that has to do with anything.

Absent a compelling reason, yes it does.

I've seen it all now, now they need to be able read a mans mental state of mind 5 years down the road.

I buy this for the most part, but w/Keisel and certainly Deebo I think it is a little different. I think the Steelers held on far too long to Hampton, probably Farrior, Ike and now maybe now Troy. But Keisel was brought back dirt cheap and that is guy who truly seems to love the game....but the Steelers do now seem well prepared to move on from him with Tuitt and Heyward firmly in place, so releasing him makes sense.

But signing Harrison still makes some sense to me because the Steelers are so empty at the OLB position. If you can sign him for $4M to $5M for one year why not do it, the guy is still productive and you would appear to get some decent value for that money. Also people need to keep in mind that Harrison is 37 years old, but the guy really didn't start getting wear and tear on his body until he was almost 30.

I actually would rather sign Harrison to a 1 year deal and explore my options through the draft, future lens of this year's and next year's FA than sign Worilds to a long term contract when you have had question marks about this guy all along. I do not dislike Worilds, but to me he was pretty much just a guy and really only deserved a 4 year $20M contract.

Maybe. Maybe these kind of things are pretty much one-off situations that happen every once in a while. Barry Foster comes to mind (though injuries played a part there, I suppose). If Worilds have been giving a ton of hints that this would be the way it ended throughout his career, then it would be a different story. But for now, I'm not going to read too much into it.

What does "mental state" have to do with anything? It's clear as day that he's a "Use the game, don't let the game use you" type of guy. The evidence is there that he was fielding offers. I don't know why some people get all indignant when people challenge transparently obvious :bscow:

And yes, our personnel department needs to weed guys like this out.

You said they need to do better scouting players and find guys that love playing football. Mental state of mind means just that, your state of mind, how the hell are they supposed to predict that 5 years down the road.

Alright, let's not resort to name calling. Everyone can freely express their opinion, unless it's about how much of an idiot someone else is.

OK. I haven't seen that. He walked away from millions, no doubt.

If people didn't give their opinions about huge news, this would be a pretty boring place. Either way, as a legend once said...he's free to get on with his life's work.

I don't see why it can't be both about the money and his other interests. He wants to do something else and move on from football (maybe long-term health is a large consideration for him) but would be willing to stay for enough money. Guys get too much money all the time. I think he's worth $5M-$6M/year, but usually if I think a guy is worth that much, someone will pay him $8M/year. It's not crazy to think he could get that. No harm waiting and seeing, so he did. When he saw he couldn't get that much, and would probably have to settle for less than $7M/year, he thought, "Not worth it."

That seems much more plausible to me than, "They only want to pay me $6M-$7M every year? Boo-hoo, I'm going home!" which is what a lot of you seem to be assuming.

Also, I wouldn't break out the "How much his heart was in it" and "How much does he really love football" talk unless you apply that to every single guy in the league. How many of them are doing it for the love of the game, versus the gobs of money they're making? If they were forced to accept reasonable salaries like the rest of us, most of the college graduates in the league would probably retire after their first contract, if ever entering the league in the first place. I love playing and watching football more than anyone I know, but if I had to do it on a level which seriously endangered my health and didn't pay great, I might be inclined to bounce at an opportune moment and go back to playing with my friends at the park. And I don't even have "other interests."

I suspect this is highly likely but it will be like last year and will be much later in the year. It would serve no function to put him on the roster now.

At least get him back for depth purposes. We need to step up and bring someone else in like Orakpo or somebody like that.

The man is 27 yrs old, made more money in 5 yrs than most of us will in a lifetime, no known permanent injury and retiring after being a starting LBer for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I will take that any day.

Worilds is in a profession where people die young, are crippled at a young age, lose their wits early. If he decided he didn't go thru the physical training, didn't want to endure the pain of a season, didn't want annual shoulder and knee scoping surgeries, didn't want to be a invalid at 45 and wanted to take his $10 million of lifetime earnings and enjoy life, all I can say is "Good for him".

Look, I'm sceptical all too. I will not be surprised if he's in camp somewhere in August. But what he's doing is hardly a good negotiating strategy. So, I'll take him at his word.

I've always maintained we should have drafted Sean Lee instead of Worilds. Hated the pick and he never really developed into the type of player you spend a second round pick on.
