I guess that explains the announcement after midnight at the end of day #1 of free agency. He was looking to land a huge deal, not a good one. If he wanted a good deal, he could have signed a long term deal with the Steelers last season instead of playing the year under the transition tag. Face it, if he had been offered the deal he wanted, the "Lord" would have told him to keep playing football. Whether he's worried about getting his brains scrambled, or he's hypersensitive, or he simply doesn't love the game, the reality is that he had every intention of continuing to play football until he saw the offers that were out there for his services ... at which point "other interests" assumed a higher priority.

No thanks. We have enough problems without investing in a guy who isn't sure he wants to play football.

This line is almost as old and tired as these Cowher players. What did the young guys learn from Keisel and Deebo all these years? It's just an excuse to keep bringing these guys back year after year because we just can't quit our favorite players. This place has turned into an aging players semi-retirement home, and it needs to stop. Football is a young mans game. Guys that need practice days off during the week, need to get on to retirement.

I was listening to Sirius NFL radio this AM, and the host discussed talking with an insider on a team that talked with Worilds about a contract, and the team rep told him that Worilds' expectations were unrealistic. The quote was something like "we're not going to pay him $1 million per sack."

If this retirement isn't at least partially about disappointment with his market value, then why field offers in the first place? If he says it's about more than money (faith, family, staying healthy or whatever), I can accept it at face value. But if he wasn't interested in staying in football at all, he wouldn't have had an agent talking to teams. I think there was an element of disillusionment to it, and I'll maintain that personal view on the situation - whether or not others agree.

Exactly. I feel like he's butthurt about how the process has gone, and is basically "taking his ball and going home." I still think he comes around once he has time to process what he'd be walking away from

Didn't expect this one. He's not one of my favorite all time Steelers or anything, but I've never disliked him and I remember some pretty great plays from him from time to time.

Agree, not worth what we were paying, okay as a really nice backup. Still was weak against the run.

    Yep.

Does it make such a difference why he chose to retire or not? In the absence of any compelling evidence either way, I'd just take him at his word, wish him all the best, and get on with finding the next killer OLB that Worilds never quite became.

    Nice little article here:

    http://dkonpittsburghsports.com/2015/03/11/column-a-decision-worilds-apart/

The Steelers also released a statement/etc (dont have the link handy).

From reading articles/tweets/etc...it seems like Worilds people called interested teams either when the legal tampering began or when F/A began to make them aware of this. The whole $1 mil a sack stuff and whatever else was floating around out there doesnt really matter and in reality is just he said she said at this point. He probably could have gotten I would think $5+ mil a year regardless of what people have been saying. In the video shown in the above article he even turned down deals last year to stay with Pittsburgh (yes Pitt gave him 9 mil in one year, but others were longer term/etc).

Say what you want to about the guy he was a decent player for the Steelers (no he wasnt to superstar LB level yet), has always been a model citizen and a very nice guy. And I wish him well!

Those who didnt want him back got their wish in an albeit surprising/odd way!

I couldn't believe it when I saw it this morning. I assumed it was an April fools day joke but it's too early for that. I would have welcomed him back. Good luck Jason.

Faith wasn't mentioned anywhere in the early reports and even if they were, I guess his faith has a price tag, he was clearly looking for a specific number and when he didn't get it, he retired.

I have no disdain for him, I wanted him back, at a fair price, I think he was our best option given the circumstances.

Maybe he figured the only way the Steelers would re-sign him is if he retired. It worked for Harrison...

this morning I read an article that cited his faith and pursuing avenues that it has provided? Also, his contract would have been close to the one Graham got so it's not like it was a minimum deal waiting somewhere. Just don't understand why some always have to "dig" for an answer when it's not anyone's business. Dude is gone and left a lot of money on the table to pursue happiness. Something many of us wish we could do.

I don't blame the guy or the others that just came out of No Where with this. Come in make your money hope to have a chance at a ring and get out before it affects your life 20 years down the road. These guys are the smart ones IMO

Actually it does matter why. If he's walking away for any reason other than family or injury, it means that we need to do a better job of drafting guys that love football.

    Big whoop!

I could say the same if he didnt retire and stayed with the Steelers.

Not getting a comp pick is not life or death here. Jeeez!

Just because 5 years after they drafted him he decides to walk away from football doesnt mean he didnt/doesnt love football. Things/people change over time and theres no way to predict the future.
