He can, but he doesn't have to. He can stay in Pitt and still get full value.

But really, the salary cap is what $120mil per team per yr. Let's say Ben's fair market value is $22mil/yr. He ain't gonna take $15mil and be paid less than Cutler or Dalton. So he gives the home town discount and takes $20 mil. Wow! The team has less than 2% more money to spent.

That's nice, but it doesn't get you a top CB, or a top pass rusher. It covers an unexpected injury to let's you make a late season trade to fill for an injury. It helps but my math says says it doesn't plug any major holes.

Cap experts, feel free to tell me where I'm wrong.

IMO we shouldn't extend Ben this offseason. There is simply no benefit to it other than for the 2015 cap ... and there are other more prudent ways to fix that. Let Ben play out his deal, clear the books, and then figure out whether it's best to franchise him or re-sign him long term next offseason.

Nah, let's nail this down now. I think it'd be too much of a distraction for Ben and the team if he goes into his final contract year without a deal.

He's financially secure. He's dealt with the distraction that comes with the Super Bowl 3 times, and well as with the following Super Bowl hangovers. He's dealt with head coach and OC changes and losing top WRs one after another. I don't think there's any need to worry about distractions. If anything it may increase his focus since he would literally be playing for his lunch.

Oh yeah ... and then there was the rape allegations, the suspension, and the eating an Oldsmobile with his face.

I just don't see why we would spend that money on Ben when we already have Landry Jones.

One major factor here is Ben's wife isn't worth $300 million...

I know all these guys push and push for the biggest contracts so they can take care of "me me me me", but I'd like to hear more stories about guys that say "hey how about this reasonable offer.... now go out and get me some better support players with that discount". I would like to think, once completing a $100M contract (not sure of actual pay out, but even at 50%..... 50M, he can realize that he is on the wrong side of his career productive years.

Unfortunately for Ben, he can't really compare his next contract to any of the big $$ recent QB's, I mean when was his last playoff WIN? I'd love for Ben to retire a Steeler, but don't want the franchise to suffer long after because of some salary cap nightmare in the future.

He just had his best season to date. Flacco got paid and its not hurting the Rats from competing.

Steelers aren't going to pay him some ridiculous contract, he'll get his market value and the team will be fine.

That is an awful idea. If we franchise him he costs us 22+ million each year against the cap. IF we extend him now he gets paid well and we save money against the cap. You have to remember important terms like guaranteed money when it comes to contracts.

I never proposed franchising him every year ... or even any year. I said allow him to play out his current contract and then decide what to do.

Regardless of what you think of Ben's game the Steelers could not find a QB of his skill on the market at any price. When you have a super bowl quality QB you pay him what he needs regardless because you can never find his replacement on the market.

It will be interesting to see how it's structured. I'm looking at the top QB contracts, and the structures are vastly different. Some have large signing bonuses (Brees, Flacco, Rodgers, Romo), and others have little or no signing bonus, but have high salary guarantees (P. Manning, Cutler). I do think we're looking at around 5 year, 110 million in new money, and I think it will be structured so that Ben sees most or all of that money. That means that if it's structured in a way that keeps his 2015 cap hit largely the same, he'll average 22 million against the cap for 2016 - 2020 - maybe starting at 20 and escalating to 24. I think that's manageable.

There are different ways to measure "highest paid." I think annual average is usually used as the metric for comparison, but that doesn't necessesarily mean squat if there's not a lot guaranteed. If Ben will be the 2nd highest paid QB when he signs, that may not be all that bad. Usually when a franchise QB gets paid, he resets the market. Rodgers has the highest average at 22 million. Ryan is 2nd at 20.75. I was assuming the new deal would be a tick above Rodgers' contract. If it's less, cool.

if you look at the contracts, the real franchise QBs have a lot of guaranteed dollars. Heck, even Cutler has over 50 million guaranteed and he is no franchise QB. A guy like Ben does not have to settle for a Kaepernick type of contract. If you're thinking Ben will agree to a contract where the big money is all in unguaranteed base salary in years 4-6, you're going to be disappointed.
