OK, didn't know that. I've been in Florida for a week so I've tried to follow this case as best I could, but beaches, beers and bikinis took priority.

I was watching CNN, and one of their sports guys said that the NFL rulebook specifies a $25k fine for tampering with game balls, so this is clearly low on the NFL's list of violations. Yeah, someone in the Pats' organization is probably going to have to cough up $25k.... maybe even $275k ($25k x 11 balls), but don't expect suspensions, or draft picks, or anything else that's substantive. It's just not going to happen.

    UPDATE:

Peter King is reporting that all 24 game balls were checked again after the game, and they all checked out fine.

    This means two things:

    1. Atmospheric conditions played no role in the deflation of the footballs.
    2. The Pats didn't tamper with the balls before the second half.

#2 leads to a bigger question: if Brady is capable of playing well with the more inflated ball, then why the heck deflate them in the first place???

I missed that. I'll see what I can do, but I wouldn't...hold my breath? No, that doesn't work. I wouldn't have...high hopes? No, that's not right either. Inflated expectations! That's it.

To the why . So he could throw them extra hard and not risk tipped balls or stripped balls. So they could run the ball and the RB could use his free arm to fight off tacklers instead of covering up.

It's like rich people who steal.

I remember reading that the Pats would spray their cleats with silicone spray in the snow, so that the snow wouldn't cake up in their cleats. The Bills didn't do that, and it gave NE a slight advantage. I forget who said this (a former Bills coach maybe?), but he was just making the case that the Pats push the envelope with things.

Is there actually a rule against that?

I agree, just wanted to gauge and see how fans would feel if the NFL sent the Colts to the SB in NE's place.

I wouldn't watch the Superbowl at all. Regardless of what the Pats did or didn't do, the Pats are very clearly the better team and easily won that game. Like the Colts players said, it wouldn't have mattered what they used for a ball, it was a spanking. Besides, the underinflated balls were taken out of the game at some point in the 1st half, so for more than half the game both teams played with the exact same balls at the exact same pressure and weight. The Pats smoked the Colts. You want to argue that the Pats don't deserve to be in the SB, that's your right, but the Colts deserve it even less. They aren't a very good team, they simply got lucky to get as far as they did.

I'm not for putting the colts in. You could argue the Ravens have a better case. But I'm not for that either.

And the NFL will NEVER rule the SB a forfeit. So we're stuck with the Cheats.

But we can always strip them after the fact. ;)

No. What happened in this Colts game is irrelevant once the SB starts. The team that wins is the winner. There has to be a winner. Either the Pats or the Seahawks. Otherwise what's the point in playing the game if you're just going to give the Seahawks the win regardless of the score at the end of the game?

I'm not sure I would be for it. Playing devils advocate here.

Thats true. If the Colts had shown up at all that game, it would be a better hypothetical.

Won't need to. Seattle will crush them anyway.

(And watch all the calls go their way too)

Yeah, thats what this whole thing has accomplished for me, went from not being able to root for either to wanting NE to get embarrassed like Denver was.

That and loss of draft picks and or suspensions, I'd be good with any of those punishments. The NFL is smug though and knows their product isn't in any jeopardy, so I won't be surprised if nothing happens at all.

After the Ray Rice and AP thing, I think the NFL's hands are tied. They'll have to act.

Why the hatred for Seattle though? It's not like it's the same team that we played back in 2005.

The Seattle team that played in last year's SB would roll the Pats. However, the Seahawks have looked shaky in both postseason games, and flat out lucked into the SB by Green Bay screw ups. They need to get back on their game, or Pinnochio Brady will be hoisting his 4th trophy.

I don't care for Carrol, Sherman and Lynch, especially Lynch. Sherman off the field is fine, mostly, he's a well spoken eloquent guy, I just don't like his act on the field. Carrol just seems more lucky than good, same with Seattle in general, like the GB game, freaking ridiculous they won that game. Lynch is just a jerk, his crotch grabbing the latest example. Sick of hearing about the 12th man, which they stole from Texas A&M, their fans aren't any louder or passionate than anyone else, it's just they have a stadium that keeps the sound in.

It's amazing they win with that offense which is why I don't think they will beat the Pats, even know I want them too but NE has a good defense as well and a much better offense. Hopefully, luck will be on Seattles side for this game too.

I don't like Seattle, either. But...I do like Russell Wilson. The guy plays the game right, plays hard, doesn't whine for calls. I remember in the NFCCG, he took off for a QB run and then slid down. He still took a headshot (from Matthews, I think) that wasn't called. It should have been. But he didn't do or say anything. He flipped the ball to the ref and ran back to the huddle. I like that. And he seems like a really good guy off the field, too.

Yeah, I have no problem with Wilson, he's at least one player I can get behind for this game.

I like Wilson a lot. On and off the field. Seems like he really has his head on straight. Which means that some time soon he will probably be outed as a mad ax murderer or something. LOL.
