Let's hope we see some exotic blitzes and rookies starting before their 4 year in the league.

I hope we go to a 4-3 and we see more stunts and twists up front send 1 LB and let those 5 create the pressure . If we can do that then we can play more man and more man zone keep QB'S guessing and create more turnovers.

With the talent shortage we have, changing DCs will have little affect if we don't improve the talent. With the DBs we have, exotic blitzes which get picked up and tight coverage at the line will add up to 3rd and long touchdowns rather than 3rd and long first downs. Be careful what you ask for.

Its's only exciting if it works. Otherwise it becomes exciting for the other team.

i do not see Butler going to a 4-3.

While I'm confident that some changes on defense will be made and the opposing offense will get some different looks, with the news of Butler officially being the guy, I firmly believe that our base defense will remain 3-4

    Keith...

Reports are he is going to get a 3 year deal. He has waited in the wings, now is his chance to shine, to bring the Defense back to a respectable level. Tomlin will have more say in the Defensive process. Time for some more bump and run lineup across from the receiver then the 10 some yard cushion crap. And consistent pass rush. The secondary and OLB position are key for this years draft. Can't wait to see what Butler brings to the table.

Let's hope he does a better job of teaching these guys not to prolong the other teams drives with defensive holding/PI/personal foul penalties.

I was actually hoping he'd go WAY outside the box and hire a woman. Oh well. I guess I'll settle for Butler.

I read on here from another poster that Tomlin has said he likes the 3-4 because it is better suited to deal with todays running QB's.

The 3-4 also offers more flexibility and the ability to create more pressure.

Probably doesn't matter much in the end, as others have said, you don't spend as much time in your base, teams are probably running more of a hybrid in todays game anyway.

this could make roster spots very important. having specialty type players that can play more of a hybrid front 7 than the standard 4-3 or 3-4. the NT spot comes to mind. do you keep a couple of guys as NT's of the old stature and two guys that are less NT types and more in the mold of hoke as DT's in the 4-3 type sets? same at DE, more of the 270-290 type guys instead of the 300 pounders as DE's usually used in a base 3-4. this is where this hybrid style kind of straps teams unless they expand rosters.

Not opposed to this hire but I don't get it. 1) I doubt Butler will be much different than DL, since he's been here since 2003, 2) if we're going with the same defense, why not with DL 3) If Butler does want to change things, could be difficult being an internal guy as players are set in their ways 4) If Tomlin wants more say, does that mean DL didn't allow it in the past (doubt that, but if so, shame on hour HC)?

I hope he stays away from the idea that 15 yard cushions is a good strategy. Like all the 3rd downs the Ravens converted.

I was hoping for Rooney Mara. Hey, we're going way outside the box, right?
