I don't think there's a top-down conspiracy, here. What we see from officiating (like in any sport) is the subjectivity of the official. Some penalties (like a false stat or delay of game) don't have any interpretation. But the two most important calls/penalties in the NFL are judgment calls: pass interference and holding. And calls/non-calls on either can break a team.

The refs are as human as anyone else. And they all have their built-in biases. The crews talk, they read the papers, they know what's going on. Don't think for a second that some of that doesn't come through in judgment calls. It's why Ryan Clark had an assortment of personal fouls on perfectly legal hits.

And it's possible that Suh's reputation tilted the officiating scales in Dallas's favor today.

They need to just institute challenges on certain types of calls. Helmet to helmet being the number one example. The game is just too fast for the human eye to really keep up with and when you've got two pro athletes running at full speed it's just too difficult to judge in the moment. A challenge would be fine there for me. That crap can cost people games on perfectly legal plays.

It's also hard for me to believe the league had it out for the lions when Suh CLEARLY should have been suspended for what he did to Rodgers and they still let him play. I can't stand the cowgirls and will never root for them and I'm not glad they won but I'm glad Suh lost.

Beyond the call the coach for Detroit made the wrong call in my opinion. 4th and 1 on the Dallas side of the 50 and a chance to win a playoff game for the first time in over 20 years and you punt?

Purposely standing on a guy's hurt calf and pressing your weight on it, which you can see his muscle flex on his left leg if you watch it close, is really pretty bad in my mind. It's amazing how Suh wants to be a tough guy all the time and has always acted like he's not gonna take any crap from anybody but when Rodgers is clearly hitting him to get his attention and he doesn't even react. It's pretty obvious what he was up to. I just think if the league really wanted the cowgirls to win they would have kept Suh out of the game.

Listen I am not a fan of Detroit or Dallas. Facts are this game was brutally called and the NFL should investigate. Detroit SHOULD HAVE WON THAT GAME. If anybody knows football and actually watched the whole game would know that.

One poster mentioned Dez Bryant running onto the field without a helmet screaming at the head ref, that alone is a 15 yard penalty and a possible ejection from the game.

The call was announced 1st down and 10, ball was placed at the 25 yard line, players ready to lineup and then you see the head ref march them back without a proper explanation? this has VEGAS, written all over it, sorry. Money talks, money betting is bigger than the sport don't kid yourselfs, small market or big market....

BTW, $$$$ KEEPS players calm because im shocked with emotions running high there is not many players actually punching refs because I would have been suspended if I was a detroit players, calling the ref every name in the book, with the temptation to b!tch slap him, but these guys make millions what do they care, lose and go home to their mansions while the fans that pay their paycheck go back to ther 9-5 work week struggling to make ends meat....

Yep, especially the Bryant part! Bottom line, the refs got overrun by the Dallas sidelines.

I agree with this pretty much 100%.

There's no conspiracy theory, but some of the rules have become complex, and sometimes eyes just aren't in the right place. I put the non-call on Heath on Saturday to the ref simply not seeing it.

Complete consistency is impossible, but the technicalities of the rules are making it easier for inconsistency to appear. In just about every game except the Bengals-Colts, the refs have been a factor (not necessarily a decisive factor, but a factor nevertheless) in the outcome. And that simply cannot happen in this day and age.

On a different note: another poster mentioned about how nobody with any weight talks about this publicly. In other sports, such as soccer, the refs are always under scrutiny, and bad calls are always focused on by analysts (usually negatively). In one case, the manager of one team replayed an entire match with the team he'd beaten, because of a botched referee call. I tend to find that NFL Network meanwhile will pick out two or three "storyline" points from a game and repeat them endlessly.

Sorry, I just watched the slow-motion replay of that non-call, and I think they made the correct call. The defender did not turn around for the ball, but just having your hand in contact with the TE is not pass interference. There was no intentional push of the TE, who basically turned backwards and fell down himself. That would have been a very questionable PI call in my opinion.

I think the Lions got hosed. Not just on that call. Reading through the comments here reminds me of what Raiders fans STILL say about the immaculate reception game. All these years later, they claim the refs called it as they did because the fans would have killed them otherwise. My oldest brother is one of those conspiracy theorists. That's why it's (usually) good to have home field.
Now, if Hochuli were calling the game, we'd still be listening to his explanation of why the flag was picked up!
Somebody should have taken a moment to clarify to the Lions.

I heard jones say in an interview this year, that if he could buy a superbowl he would, truth is I have seen their girly man coach garret cry to the refs every time they get a penalty and especially at home iv'e seen these refs pick flags up after they called a foul too many times before when garret and that whiney ass dez throw their baby tantrems, but all will end in green bay sunday when the pack kicks their ass back to dallas, greenbay favored by 6 1/2 in this game, and they dont lose at home, cow pukes are one and done.......

The retired head of officials disagrees with you, he said the defender didn't turn his head around to play the ball while in contact with the receiver which under the rule makes it a PI..............

At a minimum you have to call something there. It was obvious something happened. At worst how about offsetting penalties facemask penalty on the receiver and PI on the defender and replay the down. It was a complete screw-up on the part of the refs.

And the heads linesman agreed with me, what does that matter? I'm just saying that regardless of he made a play on the ball or not, having a hand on the jersey itself does not constitute PI. For that matter, the TE was pushing off the defender prior to attempting the catch.... a call could have gone either way offensive or defensive..... it's a judgement call made on the field.

Okay, I just saw this play for the first time. The problem I have with it is......the judgment call was ALREADY made on the field. There was hand-fighting, clear defensive holding, possibly an offensive facemask, etc.... but eliminate that, the defender didn't play the ball, and contacted and pulled on the receiver's arm prior to the ball getting there. It's clear. The call was made, the call was announced, the ball was spotted........and THEN someone decides nope, it never happened. If that had been Steelers/Ravens and Thuggs had been making the contact, the entire city of Pittsburgh would have exploded in conspiracies....especially given Morelli's involvement (how is that guy still an official???? He should've gone the way of Luckett). There have been few times when announcers have been at a loss for words about what they're seeing happen. If the head linesman had thought it WASN'T pass interference, shouldn't he have been running and trying to wave it off prior to the initial meeting, announcement, and ball-spotting? I have no dog in this fight, but just watching it as it happened with no explanation -- even the Cowboys players seemed confused....is it really 4th down???? Morelli should be gone.....should've been gone years ago...

If by fluke ( refs) they win in GB, I'll have to walk my dog on another route, there's a cowboy lover just up the street from me who has a man crush on Romo. I can't handle listening to him, I can only stand there if his hot daughter is standing next to him, then I can handle it :innocent:
