I found out last Tuesday that we'd be playing a really nice and heavy version of Joy to the World this past weekend. So, with short notice and to practice, I decided to record it at home and have my 10 year old daughter sing the lead vocal, and my brother who was in town visiting sing harmony. We had a lot of fun recording and I thought I'd share.

This is just me playing guitar and bass, my daughter and brother singing, and a free drum track I downloaded. Hope you like it.

The band does several Christmas songs each year, but this was the first time doing this one (the original is from an album called Jingle Jam).

As far as recording with my daughter, I've recorded my own stuff, and she sings in school programs and things like that, but this was the first time I've had her record a song with me.

Ha, great reference. I love the Breakfast Club. In fact, my wife and I just watched it again about a month ago. Great movie.

That's cool Steel! I've been working on a fingerstyle arrangement of Sleigh Ride that's been giving me headaches but I love that song and I love fingerstyle jazz arrangements of Christmas songs. Out of curiosity do you actually put a chord substitution in there and go to the 5? It sorta sounded like it to me but my ear is not exactly what it used to be because I just don't have time to pursue music like I used to with work, pastoral, family, and Steeler demands. LOL. Also do you use Pro Tools or anything? I've never been good with stuff like that. I would just show up at the studio and say "mic me and I'm using my own delay". LOL. BTW kudos to your little girl. I never get sick of hearing children sing about my Lord. Well done!

The whole song is more or less 5th cords (G5, C5, F#5, D5, and an E5 and A5 here and there). I haven't used Pro Tools before. I recorded the whole thing using 8 tracks in Mixcraft (2 separately recorded guitar tracks doubled, 2 main vocal tracks doubled, and 2 harmony doubled, plus bass and drums). I have a Line 6 POD HD500X that I plug directly into my computer that was used for both guitar trackss, and the bass was also the POD HD500X using a bass octaver and a flip top amp model to simulate a real bass guitar.

My daughter loves to sing. She had a solo in her school program called "Who would imagine a King" that she really enjoyed singing. She made me proud :smiley1:

I'm a big analog guy but for a while I had a Line 6 HD147. The main thing I liked about it was I could dial up a Soldano type sound and a Hot Rod Soldano is one of my dream amps. I got rid of it though after a little while. Since I don't play live I never really try to go all out on amps anymore. I even had a Spider for a while. Then I got a Marshall Class 5 just because it was a cheap Class A and good "bedroom" amp. I've got a Wampler Sovereign but it was defective from the factory and Wampler wouldn't help me out at all. I think it has a bad jack. It is a SWEET pedal though. I want their Soldano pedal as well. I could then use my Tube Screamer to dirty up my clean sound and use the Soldano pedal for some really nasty distortion. Ala Warren Haynes who is one of my favorite players ever. Also Knopfler and Robert Cray use Soldano as well.

I love the Soldano amp model for my clean patches. I use it with some compression, just a bit of delay and some reverb along with using the neck pickup and it makes a nice Knopfler-like tone.

The patch I used for the Joy to the World recording is a Marshall Super Lead amp with a Tube Screamer in front of it, and then nothing but a little bit of plate reverb. It's a brand new patch I just dialed up and I'm really liking it and got to use it live once so far and I love how it sounded.

I used to use a Peavey amp when I played at church, but to get the volume needed to mic it properly, it had to have too much stage volume. The HD500X is my first Line 6 product. I've never liked their actual amps, but this multi-effects pedal is one of the best guitar related investments I've ever made, and since I no longer need an amp on stage with it, it took care of the stage volume issue.

That's too bad about Wampler not helping you. I've never had any of their products, but Peavey, Ibanez, and Line 6 have all had awesome customer support when I've had to call them. It's not cool hearing that you're stuck with a defect.
