Since we seem to have Spence and Williams for the time being, and Worilds might be leaving free agency, what do u guys think of moving Timmons outside, Jones on the other side, Shazier, and Spence/Williams on the inside, I think that might help in probably drafting an immediate starter at strong safety, since we probably are going to be drafting too high for a impact corner

No, tried it before and it didn't work. Williams maybe would be worth a try on the outside.

Timmons wasn't very good a few years back and I don't think much has changed. What I would really like to see is Shazier to get some opportunities starting this week especially if Harrison can't go. Even just for a few snaps from here on out. Since VW and Spence seem to have a leg up at ILB for now why not give Shazier a chance to use his speed coming off the corner. I think he could provide a big lift down the stretch. Lebeau are you listening? Thoughts?

You want Shazier, who's upside comes from his speed and ability to change direction, to try being an outside speed rusher that needs to engage then break off the Tackle or hold the edge?

Shazier Doesn't have the strength or size to play OLB in the 3-4.

If you watched him in college he has shown the ability. Why does he have to engage the tackle when he can run around him. I'm not talking permanently. I'm talking situationally....
I've quite aware of what it takes to be a 3-4 LB ,all I'm saying is instead of him not playing at all because of VW and Spence why not give him a couple of snaps especially if Harrison is out. We need to generate a pass rush from somewhere and its a helluva lot better than watching Troy fail miserably time and time again

At that rate, just play the speedster at the FS spot. Troys always up near the box anyhow.

No! He can't go outside... It might work for a series or two (situationally) but I'm willing to bet the OC or the QB notices and checks down to a run at his side and he'll be demolished. No upside unless you come out with a crazy roaming package and that's his job.

I just posted a thread that I think they are going to move Shazier to SS like Lake did.

No. Ideally, Shazier starts getting snaps at ILB and works his way back into his starting position. That way we can draft a pass rusher to replace Worilds. Fowler from Florida would be a good option. JJ,Shaz, Timmons, Fowler could be pretty solid for us.

If we switched to a 4-3 I believe Shazier would be an excellent weak side LB. Just think of him running down ballcarriers.Getting back to original question no he isn't a replacement for Worilds.

I'd rather move up Howard Jones from the practice squad to fill in at OLB, than move someone from another position.

I thought Zumwalt was an ILB, for some reason.

    Yeah, Moats.

When Worilds is gone I think we should put Moats over in his spot, rather than move Timmons to OLB where he hasn't made very many splash plays during his pretty significant playing time there.

The only way Shazier sniffs OLB is in a 4-3.

I think he could do it in packages. Not full time but in certain situations. He has plenty of speed to get around guys.

It would have to be a successful DL stunt for him to avoid the OT's, otherwise I think he'd get swallowed up.

Good case study would be what Mingo is doing in Cleveland, and Irvin out in Seattle. Both smaller, lean guys who are very athletic with a quick first step. Irvin had some early success, but other than that haven't heard much from those two guys.

I could see Shazier at OLB in gimmick plays, but not a full time role.

I've seen it suggested before, but I can't figure out why.

No I want to see Timmons at his natural position as well as Shazier. Timmons was the good solder but he is no natural pass rusher. This team cannot afford another season of no pass rush, and I believe that Wourlds has been used way to much in coverage because, well, the secondary and LeBeau. I do feel with Ike on the bench the pass rush will get better due to better corner play. Moats is a decent player and can start. Wourlds will be gone. As far as Mitchell I to would use him at SS and draft a FS. Or as Mac suggested, move Allen to the FS position. Also need to stabilize the front 3. Tuitt needs to start as he should. I hope JJ comes on strong to end the fears of another Alonzo Jackson. He needs to step up and step up big. This Defense really puts no fear in opposing offenses. A changing of the guard might remedy this next season.

Also, suggestions that JJ switch positions. Steelers didn't draft these guys in the first round to switch positions. JJ will be an OLB and Shazier will be an ILB and both will be successful there.

*edit* got my threads mixed up, thought this was the one about moving Shazier.

You don't have to wonder how good Timmons will be at it. You just have to remember. He's already done it.

he's played both and has the size to do it. hopefully they are putting some more muscle and a little more weight on him as he sits and learns this year. if they can put 10 lbs. of muscle on him, at 6-4 245 he could definitely play OLB for us.

Exactly what I'm trying to say. Also I'm only talking about the immediate future ,not forever. 3 and 7 or 8 Shazzam! Go get the QB. That would also eliminate the opposition running at him just because he's on the field. The talk of moving him to safety is even more far fetched....why because he can run fast in a straight line, there is also a ton of agility that needs to be present I doubt he has enough to make it at safety. No one else seems to be getting home with any regularity why not try him a few times a game, better than being relegated to specials only.

No to Timmons moving to OLB, he didn't do a good job a few years back. They should re-sign Moats even if he doesn't start they could use the depth. They will probably draft another OLB in one of the first 3 rounds, maybe Zumwalt and Howard Jones can contribute next season. Shazier might want to bulk up for next season.

:this!: I have been liking what I see of Moats from the right side. Has played from the left side at all this year?
