Mike Tomlin and his wife were featured on HBO's State of Play last night. It wasn't what I was expecting, but it was cool to get a look at his private life (though he wasn't in it much). I thought it was interesting that he doesn't know what their phone bill is, or how much their monthly mortgage is.

    Did anyone else watch?

If I was a millionaire I wouldn't know how much my bills were either. They would just come out of an account and I would pay no attention to them

With the weird stuff we do on timeouts, perhaps there's just a general aversion to numbers there....

The impression I was left with was that he is so 24/7 football for most of the year that he doesn't have any space for handling their finances.

In one segment his wife was saying that she made flight reservations for them from her phone, and he was surprised, because he didn't know that could be done. Later, she was telling a story about how he thought they still made big CRT TVs, and that Circuit City was still around.

Interesting, I thought you were about to discuss the 2009 movie starring Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck. The reason? Crowe's character is a journalist from Pittsburgh. Check this still from the film, where a Steeler mini helmet is visible. Crowe is often seen sipping from a Steeler mug.

Yeah, I was confused for a bit too - the film was based on a British series, which was much better as it took longer to build the suspense and complexity... a bit like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in that regard. Though the series obviously lacked any Steelers references.

Circuit city isn't still around? Wasn't that your big electronics store? What else is there besides Best Buy? Or is Best Buy pretty much the only store of that kind?

Not surprising at all. I used to work with some guys that were pretty senior in the military before they retired and took Govt. civilian jobs and were working on getting PHD's. Plenty of times I've had to explain some mundane detail I thought everyone knew to them, while they sat doe-eyed like they'd never heard of it....

Yes, the life of an NFL coach leaves little time for anything else.

Heck, I don't even know what my bills are to the exact zero and cents, just ball park figure, I use automatic bill pay for pretty much everything.

He doesn't live in his fears so he must not be afraid of his wife taking all the money and leaving him. In all seriousness I'm sure as a head coach he is focused primarily on football and like most couples myself included one spouse takes care of the finances. I hope his wife has a good head on her shoulders or has hired a good accountant because the NFL has some special tax rates that have to be accounted for when figuring out what money to set aside for such things. Take this weekend for example they play in Georgia and so they have to pay GA state tax out that game check, so every road game they have to pay the state they are in's state tax. That would confuse the heck out of me and I am sure I would end up paying a penalty if I didn't have an accountant I could trust.

It's known as "the jock tax" as it applies to out of state athletes. It is not in every state, though.

Yes what he said. I only know about it because I watched an ESPN documentary on athletes and their money and that was one that Bernie Kosar brought up, the things they don't stress to NFL players. Interesting enough the number one mistake athletes make in spending/investing their money...openning a restaurant.

H.H. Gregg is another big one. They are generally more expensive but I think when they have a sale it is much more of a deal than what Best Buy does. Also people can get tvs and things like that through Amazon and Wal-Mart and other chain stores. I got 2 of my tvs at Best Buy and one at H.H. Gregg. I got my laptop at H.H. Gregg because it was a much better deal than anything they had at Best Buy. Also Best Buy's customer "service" is horrible and the "Geek Squad" are all just a bunch of posers.

He makes 5 million a year and has a mortgage? Sounds like he needs to take a course in money management....
