Thoughts on a rule change: Sit for a down after personal foul?

Obviously there are arguments against this but this keeps popping into my head as a way to cull egregious personal fouls (though I worry about throwing the baby out with the bathwater).

Last week L Webb made a really nasty horsecollar tackle against Joe Morgan. I'd say it was pretty obvious it was a no holds barred, last ditch effort to keep him out of the endzone. IMO he should have sat a down in addition to whatever yardage (and $) he was fined.

Dunno... probably an overreaction to a really f-ed up tackle but I wonder... is there a case to be made to application of such a penalty (and a reasonable way to objectively discern the foul)?

    Interesting thought.

Something I never really thought of but it is intriguing. Im inclined to go further and say 5 plays or even the rest of the series if you really want to get punitive (don't think 1 play is a big punishment).

But then again as you state you are opening up for more controversy. What about those close roughing the QB/helmet to helmet fouls? In those cases the 15 yards can be damaging enough without losing the player for any amount of time.
