I'll argue that drafting a young QB to be a backup is a waste of time for this team. As long as Ben is here, and the team thinks of itself as a playoff team, the perfect backup is a experienced guy that started some during his career, but can't anymore. A guy who can fill in for a few games if Ben gets hurt. A guy who doesn't have to learn on the job when he's called to make a few starts. Like Grad or Batch before him.

i didn't understand drafting Jones. Nobody in the NFL develops backup QBs, Ben was still relatively young when they drafted him, so it was too early to groom him to be the heir apparent. He wasn't going to play, and if by some miracle he showed signs of being a starter, by shining during a long Ben injury, he'd leave to go elsewhere the first chance he got. So, he was a wasted pick for a team with needs.

    Matt Cassel? 7th round
    Ryan Mallett? 3rd round
Both drafted by New England, I'm sure there are plenty more.

:this!: That's the point of my post they will continue to lose depth at thin positions, while Landry is on the roster. With Kiesel being injured it would've been a good time to put Mauro on the 53 and see what he can do.

I was thinking the same. And Brady, like SC said.

Let's not forget Aaron Rogers. He spent 3 seasons holding a clipboard.

The thing that really scares me about the Landry pick is that if they honestly thought he could be "the future" what is gonna happen when Ben is actually gone? Because it is obvious that Landry is NOT the future. But if they really thought he could be something I just hate to see what's gonna happen when they have to make the next pick for a true qb. With Tomlin's track record of coaching up o linemen we better take another big guy that can scramble and shake off defenders because if we have some puny guy back there he is gonna get killed.

Same with Jarvis Jones. His 40 time was really slow at his pro day and he did the same amount of reps on the 225 lb bench (20) as Dri Archer did. Perhaps I am missing something.
