I still don't understand the Steelers thinking not putting him on the practice squad, because they fear some team will claim him. Really, he hasn't shown anything in the 2 preseasons to think he could be a starting NFL QB. He has no pocket awareness, he looks like another one of college QBs who played in a shotgun spread offense but won't amount to anything in the NFL like Blaine Gabbert. I just don't see another team putting Jones on their 53 man roster.

We can call back Charlie Batch to fill the role of third string quarterback. Landry Jones was a waste when we picked him.

Maybe they fear that he knows enough of the offense to give away secrets.

Right wrong or otherwise, we needed younger on our backup QB's. Batch, Leftwich? Come on..... most backup QB's hold clipboards, so what's it matter if it was Landry Jones or Terry Hanratty.

    Yep.

Not to resurrect an old bugbear of mine, but I would rather find someone who can be both a long snapper and play another position, or a punter who can also kick FGs, than lose the 3rd string QB, whoever it is.

I talked to Charlie on that after game show he is always on. I told him he needed to get back on the team cause, WE WE'RE ALL CHITTING OUR PANTS if Ben were to go down. He just laughed. The pants part I changed to scared to death. Didn't think they wanted me saying stuff like that on live radio

this is in answer to steelers5859. Forgot to do the quote thing

The Jones pick reminds me a lot of the Tee Martin pick that never paid dividends.

I didn't understand the Ziggy Hood pick either. The guy didn't fit our defence when we picked him. He was a wasted pick

Can we really afford players like this? Archer?
And you wonder why we are mediocre?
Who is making these choices? KC/MT?
A clean sweep is needed folks.

If it was Batch, you would at least be valuable in that he would be like having an additional coach that Ben could bounce ideas off of. They both had a pretty good relationship when he was here. Landry Jones absolutely has no value.

Amen to you on this. I still don't know why he is on active roster. We have lost several quality players off our practice squad this year such as Wesley Johnson and Josh Mauro. It makes no sense, he is always inactive for game days anyways. If Ben ever got hurt you can promote him up to 53 man from the practice squad. He has never shown anything special in pre-season, so I think it's safe bet no one would pick up Landry Jones.

People often say this, but - as much of a fan of Batch as I am - I just don't see where this all this great coaching and advice was. Did it help Ben improve? It seems more that things like checking down to the RB, throwing less INTs and so on actually happened after Batch left...

Because, like most teams, we have a third QB. It's simple as that.

Of course, teams don't have to carry three QBs, but it's a risky gamble. Say Jones was on the PS. Say Ben gets injured one week. If I'm the next team we play, I'm snapping up Jones straight away, regardless of what shuffling I have to do, because that leaves the Steelers with only one usable QB.

Like I said before: the argument as to whether we should carry a 3rd QB, and the argument as to whether we should carry Landry Jones, are two separate things. If you don't want a 3rd QB, then it doesn't matter whether it's Jones or not. You just want that roster space used for someone else. If you don't want Jones, then good sense dictates you get another QB to sit behind Gradkowski, and that doesn't free any extra spaces up at all.

Agreed. Yes Batch looked the part of a mentor and coach when he was here, but who know if he was actually any benefit? It's not like he retired and instantly became a QB's coach somewhere.

Well you got the first two letters right! BA! ;)

I think a NFL-caliber coaching staff should be able to tell after one camp if a QB has what it takes to be something different, to be something worth holding on to. Usually it's not the physical stuff, but the intangibles like moxie, confidence, and film study. I don't get to watch the preseason games being in a way different TV market, but from what I read Landry Jones has none of the intangibles that would lead us to believe he could be a starting-quality NFL QB. So why keep him?

I'm all for keeping a 3rd QB on the roster if he has some kind of trait that every other college QB may not have. They all have good enough arms and stuff like that (generally speaking), but if we are going to keep a guy around to hopefully develop, why not keep an attitude guy? Heck, I'd rather have Tebow than Landry, and I'd be fine with that. At least Tebow offers some kind of leadership quality and maybe, just maybe could improve his fundamentals. He's the kind of guy I want to keep around a few years as my 3rd stringer. Not someone who has zero chance of doing anything, and everyone knows it.

This isn't meant as a sign Tebow post, but rather, we kicked the tires on Jones for nearly three years now and it's clearly time to move on to give someone else a chance, so hopefully they do. Draft a late round QB every year until we find one that raises an eyebrow in camp. It's too important of a position not to. Heck we spend 3rd round picks on gimmick players so what's the harm throwing a 6th or 7th round selection at the QB spot?

    Lol.

I was intrigued during the preseason to see if Kay might make a run at the 3rd spot, but he seemed to be even further away that Jones.

At the moment, I wonder if there are two possible things going on:
    a) Jones is being held on to because he was a 4th round pick, and we want some return from that, if only in the longevity of his clipboard-holding.
    b) Jones is actually better than what the majority see of him, the coaches can see some things that are worth holding on to, and he still has the potential to surprise us.

Yeah I think those are two very realistic scenarios. Here's to B! :drinks:

A lot goes on behind closed doors so maybe he's got something that we can't see during the limited time in camp and preseason.

Very true. We don't actually get to see him at all.. Coaches see him in practice and as you suggest see something in him they like so far other than his ability to grip the clipboard tightly and never drop it lol

We never even hear reports about his growth

When was the last time we drafted a young QB and he has become a tried and true back up QB for us. They are usually gone after 3 years.

Steelers just sign FA vets that are somewhat proven to be a back up.
