throw two picks, botch a snap, fumble twice, drop an easy INT, get his ankles broken by Vick, drop passes, shank a 23 yard fg, or kick a lame onside kick.

Just thought in case other posters were trying to lay blame on the coaching staff lol

I have to agree with this. This game came down to a slew of really lame turnovers and mistakes. This team's performance seems to hinge on big plays. One or two in our favor and our guys get pumped and dominate. If they go in the other direction we completely deflate and things start snowballing in the wrong direction.

The "coaching staff" didn't win a Super Bowl either, but gets credit for it anyway.

Are the coaches ever to blame for losses? Do they ever deserve credit for a win? If you truly believe the answer is no to both (which some around here appear to believe), why even have coaches since they apparently do nothing and are responsible for nothing?

I agree. Just think of the money the Rooneys could save by replacing Tomlin with some high school coach at a fraction of the cost.

Here is the problem that I have with the coaching and Mike Tomin in particular with yesterdays game plan.

If you have the hottest QB in the league coming off back to back 6 TD huge chunks of yardage performances then why in the heck do you ELECT to put your swiss cheese defense on the field knowing there is a good possibility that you will be playing from behind almost immediately.

Take the ball and put it in Big Bens hands to lead this team to early points and have the JETS play catch up.

    It's really that simple.

And they did not have this team mentally focused and ready to play. That is what coaches are supposed to do.

I was irritated by the opening kickoff decision ... but nothing got me more riled up that bringing Deebo onto the field on the goal line and running a pass play for him in the 4th quarter when we're down by 17. That's a dumb play under any circumstance, but to do it when you desperately need the points???

Mike Tomlin and Todd Haley, the turk wants to see both of you ... :butcher:

It's even more irritating when you have never practiced the play and your QB is confused by the fact that Harrison is even on the field. Brilliant

I disagree. Were you irritated by the opening kickoff decision in the Baltimore game?

PIT wins the coin toss and elects to defer. BLT elects to Receive, and PIT elects to defend the north goal.
S.Suisham kicks 65 yards from PIT 35 to end zone, Touchback.
    Baltimore Ravens at 15:00

    That worked out pretty good.

Even though the Jets did move the ball on their 1st series TS [the Steelers] did stiffen and held then to a FG. Meanwhile, they got a good look at just about everything the Jets planned to do and also assured getting the ball to start the 2nd half.

PIT wins toss, elects to Receive, and CLV elects to defend the West goal.
B.Cundiff kicks 71 yards from CLV 35 to PIT -6. D.Archer to PIT 14 for 20 yards (B.Mingo; J.Bademosi). Steelers call tails for the coin toss
Pittsburgh Steelers at 15:00, (1st play from scrimmage 14:56)

How did that work out? Fact. In just about every game Pit lost the other team won the toss and deferred.

On Deebo. Why not? He does just about everything else. I was thinking of putting him in at QB. Long Snapper Uhh No. :smiley1:

I agree to a point, when you have a fumble, pic or penalty it is on the player, but a total meltdown on all 3 sides of the ball in a game Tomlin KNEW would be a possible letdown game, I have to pit this one on Tomlin. This team was not prepared, focused or managed from the end of last week to take the field to win a game impacting the division lead. Given Tomlin's history playing games like this vs. teams with loosing records, yep, this one is on TOMLIN.

Ugh… here we go again. Because we can point to a few stupid pivotal plays by individual players, the coaches are completely off the hook. They obviously pulled all of the right strings, and the stupid players screwed it all up. However, the coaches DID throw 12 TD passes over the prior 2 games, and DID force the Texans to suffer an almost unprecedented meltdown at the end of the first half. That's how it works, right?

    1st Bal game:

    Play By Play 9/11/2014
BLT wins the coin toss and elects to defer. PIT elects to Receive, and BLT elects to defend the east goal.
J.Tucker kicks 65 yards from BLT 35 to end zone, Touchback.
    Pittsburgh Steelers at 15:00

TB wins the coin toss and elects to defer. PIT elects to Receive, and TB elects to defend the north goal.
M.Koenen kicks 65 yards from TB 35 to end zone, Touchback.
    Pittsburgh Steelers at 15:00

Just having some fun here. The only reason I am posting this is because I only made one freaking post in all those Jet type game threads. It was "If they win the coin toss I hope they defer" :smiley1:

Seriously now though, with all the mistakes and everything does anyone really believe that game was lost on a coin flip. C'mon man!

This^^^ . The coaches are supposed to have this team ready to play, and while I appreciate the strategy of deferring the kick, I hate it because the defense seems to give up first possession scores every single time and if they manage to hold the team to not score, it ends up with the offense pinned deep and results in opposing teams score eventually anyway. I know they want to run the ball but lets let the QB play and get a lead and maybe when you're up by 2 or 3 scores or if the defense looks like it can stop the other team, then go and implement a combination of running and passing. Face it, our defense is going to give up 20+ points per game along with long drives, the only way this team wins is by throwing it and getting scores, this isn't the Cowher teams that were close to unbeatable with a 2 score lead, this team requires we score almost every possession, even against bad teams. We lost to a team with no wins and a team with 1 win, how bad is that? The coaching staff has a job to keep guys focused and make sure they know that just wearing the jersey doesn't mean a win and they need to be up for every game no matter who they are playing and that disaster we saw looked like the team took the week off after the 3rd straight win, that IS ON THE COACHES.

Exactly. Our team was not prepared to play on Sunday, again, and that is on the coaches.

Apparently. I don't get at all how anyone can think the coaches are not responsible for this meltdown.

Not sure anything would have made much of a difference yesterday, but considering the Steelers hadn't played on the road for nearly a month - meaning not having faced hostile crowd noise - and the last time we did we got our butts kicked in Cleveland, I say the deferring to receive the KO to the 2nd half wasn't the worse decision they made all day and as it turns out, could and should have got them right back in the game. Very winnable game even until mid-4th Qtr - but obviously they were not hungry enough nor synchronized enough to maintain their Division lead. Blame goes all around although 20 points should not have been such a mountain to overcome based on the previous 3 games (all at home).

Ben is the one that decides what to do with the coin toss. Tomlin has delegated that power to him. He said that Ben just "does what he feels" about it. If he thinks the d should get the ball first then he lets them. Tomlin has given him that responsibility. Spread the word about this because I've seen a lot of people blaming Tomlin for the coin toss when he really DOESN'T pick what to do. I know he has his deficiencies but we know that this isn't one of them. Now if you want to have a conversation about whether or not he SHOULD decided what to do that is a different story.

Tomlin knew that there was a possibility of a let down. I am sure he and the other coaches expressed their feelings to the players. The coaches can tell the players until they are blue in the face not to do X, Y, or Z or to do X, Y, or Z.

The players are grown men that know what it takes to win games. They also know they cannot take the opposition lightly regardless of records. The players failed the coaches by not executing and by making costly mistakes. The coaches didn't give the ball away.

Everyone is to be held accountable.

The players for piss poor execution.
The coaches for piss poor preparation and game planning.

Ask yourselves, IF Bill Belichek were coaching our team yesterday, who would have won?

If his players turned the ball over 4 times and played poorly the Pats would had lost.

Now there is some stellar head coaching. Forget planning, tactics, or reasoning through a decision. Let your QB decide based on how he "feels". Perhaps this is the best insight into how Tomlin coaches - based on feelings, not thinking.
