Coach Tomlin's Post-Game Comments at Browns

Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin talks following Sunday game against the Browns.

Coach Mike Tomlin: We failed in all three phases. We didn’t produce points that reflected the way we possessed the ball and the yards that we gathered because we didn’t execute situationally, particularly in the red area. We missed an opportunity to put points on the board in the red area because we mishandled a field goal snap. Particularly in the first half we gave up plays that flipped the field and produced points. They had two catches for about 100 yards and 14 points there. We’ve got to play better, it’s just that simple. But you also have got to acknowledge that they played well. They executed their plan better than we executed ours and for that I give them credit. We have to swallow this one and we will. Hopefully it will be a learning experience for us moving forward, but obviously it is what it is today. From an injury standpoint Steve McLendon has a shoulder sprain, Mike Mitchell has a knee sprain, Brett Keisel has a knee sprain. Those guys are being evaluated. A couple of the other guys that went down during the game were able to go back into the game. We’ll see what those guys look like in the next couple of days or so.

You held them in the first quarter then it turned around. How did it turnaround?
They hit two 50-yard plays, or whatever. They threw a throw-back to the tight end that took them down to the four and they scored on the next play. They hit a play-pass, the tight end got behind them on 3rd and 2 for a touchdown. You can’t give up big plays. It changed the flow of the game in a positive way for them, a negative way for us. You couple that on the front end of that, we missed an opportunity to put points on the board prior to that possession because we botched a field goal operation. We failed on several fronts.

Why come out running as much as you did today?
We are running it effectively. We were 4.5 or whatever for the day, I think we were better than that in the early stages of the game. We’re going to run the football because we can and we will. We’ve got good backs. That’s always going to be part of our operations.

Are you more perflexed or frustrated that the offense isn't putting up points?
I think I am frustrated like we all are because we are capable of moving the ball and possessing the ball, but the points are not reflective of that. We have to knuckle up and get better in some situational areas, particularly red zone and goal line.

Are you convinced you have the right approach and people?
I am sure of it but we are not executing. We have to look at all areas. We missed some throws, etc., etc. We have people in position to make plays that didn’t. The bottom line is we came up short in that area and we can’t.

Did the long passes to tight ends come out of nowhere or did you see something that made you expect them?
I think the tight end hit a 40-yard catch on us the first possession in the first game, in the opener. We know he is a vertical tight end but our play didn’t reflect that. We have to give them credit and obviously we have to get back to work.

I get the impression that Tomlin believes if we just work harder, just practice harder, that our problems will fix themselves. I hope I'm wrong...

All that's missing is "we didn't get to our game."

Tomlin has has been spewing this dribble from his mouth for the last 4 years, and we just get worse , How can Art/ Colbert not see this and do something abot it .. unless they are both to inept to solve the problem....

It's Dan Bylsma bud and yes the Penguins are playing better as a team post Bylsma. At least one franchise in Pittsburgh gets it.

SAME BS.. What do you expect him to say? He and Colbert are destroying this proud franchise. The team lacks an identity and discipline. Hey Steelers fans.....we are in for some LONG years ahead of us.

I'm afraid that Ben will depart and we don't quite understand yet how long those years may actually be. He ain't sticking around for this circus that's for sure!

Without Ben, this team would be lucky to win four games, and Ben played an awful game today.

I think Ben has heart but without a commitment from the rest of the organization he will split. Didn't see the game though so I can't have a constructive argument.

Steel1031...I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that they might win a game or two at home with Ben.

Not advocating getting rid of Ben, but how can you say we would be lucky to win four games? Maybe we end up with QB that's better than Ben?
    Maybe worse? W

SteelerGlenn....do you watch the NFL? Who are you going to get to play QB for the Steelers, currently, that is better than Ben? Do you think Hoyer would win more than four games if he was the QB for the Steelers? If Ben went down, how many games do you think they would win??

Are you really going to get on here and insult me? Really? If Ben goes down with an injury we're in trouble yes. If we trade or don't sign Ben in the future it doesn't ensure we will only win four games.
