I agree with everyone regarding bad coaching, bad execution and just general malaise .. Time to get rid of DL and Tomlin and even Munchak because the Oline play is questionable from a week to week basis and lacks consistency

A large part of the field position or lack there of is directly related to the change in kickoffs. I haven't looked at any recent articles on it, but after a full season the number of kickoffs returned dropped from 80% down to under 17%. Haley needs to adjust his offense to be able to compensate for all of those starts at the 20.

We are hard to watch, 4000 yd passer and nothing to show for it. Another Detroit Lion Team
Thank you KC/MT. When if ever will we ever
get back to Steeler football? A change is needed.

Doesn't work quite as well with no RBs in the backfield.:smiley1:

Haley's play calling in the redzone sucks for the most part, those stupid screen passes to AB are wasted plays. Or Ben throws a dump off pass for a short gain, JB is a big WR throw the ball in the endzone fade patterns.

They tried a couple of times yesterday, but Ben didn't pull the trigger. He decided to stand back there and do pump fakes.

The defense needs to get a lot more turnovers if they are going to improve average starting field position. They need a better punter too. In the redzone they need to go tall. Stop worrying about who it will offend and put your tallest receivers/TE's in there. Let the munchkins have the first 80 yards of the field then give it up to the big boys.

The last two games Ben has not been on form. I think I said last week, he's started looking for the gamebreaker every time. Now, it's fair enough that he's not throwing INTs, but he's also started to ignore the RB out in the flat, which was something that used to frustrate me about his play a few years ago.

Haley has in the past been good at playing the long game - focus on some types of plays for a few games, then changing it up and catching the defense off guard. I hope that's the plan this year, because we won't be able to keep doing "3rd and long, throw to AB" all season long.

Yes they did throw numerous bubble screens and short throws to the line of scrimmage but you saw very little of the 5-7 yard crossing routes, quick slants to the middle or slants to the outside from the slot. Someone started a thread about how the Jags DL looked and how they got pressure without blitzing but if you look at how the Steelers tried to counter it, they were using the wrong scheme everytime. They would go spread offense no RB, the Jags countered by having the LB's drop almost ten yards off the LOS and rush the front four. The coaching staff didn't counter this by having anyone in the gap between the DL and LB's, Ben would get pressured as he waited for guys to find the holes in the coverage between the LB's in zone and the DB's. They could have made a killing off 3-4 yard dumpoffs to RB's coming out of the backfield or Heath just running a five yard route and turning to catch the ball. Force them to bring all seven into the box or even eight and then start the 15-20 yard stuff to Brown or Wheaton on slants or go routes, play action with throws to Heath after he looks like he is blocking and releases past the LB's. Lots of little adjustments that could have and should have been made.

Just Like Del said.. Poorly coached. It has not been a secret that Coach T is not the field strategist that Cowher or CHN was.. nor will he ever be. I always felt that he was brought in until a real suitable replacement for Cowher could be found, but then everyone "settled" for him. He should go.

Can you imagine Tomlin being a Sunday morning talking head?

Our redzone offense has been awful or average at best since the Tomlin/Ben era established itself independent of the Cowher legacy. I thought it was Arians and now folks seem to think it's Haley. I'm looking at the only constants and I think it comes down to Ben doing what he wants to do and Tomlin not correcting it.

There is no excuse for not running the ball more against the Jags and why we have no slants or quick passes that aren't bubble screens is beyond me.

All these weapons, all those yards and ratings and we're 19th in scoring and 26th in redzone scoring - different year, different coordinator, same story.

    wait

run more against the 32nd ranked pass defense?

this board would have gone ballistic in a loss and trying to pound the ball

The Steelers won. So that's a good thing.

Stop acting like the Steelers have ever consistently blown teams out. It hasn't been the Steelers M.O.

I think the coaches put these players in great position to make a lot of plays and the players blow it.

Ben should be leading that offense to 30-40 points per game. I checked the scores of the other Sunday games. 30 points seems to be enough to win most of them. This offense needs to step up.

They were getting SIX yards a carry and went pass happy in the redzone. They got ONE touchdown to show for it. They passed all day against the 32nd ranked pass defense and put TEN points. TEN. So, yeah run the football. Especially in the redzone and especially with two of the strongest running backs in the league.

8-8 two years in a row and it's not because we got run happy all of a sudden.

10 points against a team that was giving up 38 a game. Brilliant coaching job.

I read this on the Steelers they have one of the better rushing attacks in the league, but they throw 70% of the time in the redzone. Ben can't be holding the ball and fumbling in the redzone, they need some quick hitting plays.

I think our red zone offense will look a lot better once Martavis Bryant gets up to speed. With Heath and AB on the field, he will see single coverage in the corner of the end zone. 6'4" with hops will make a difference.

I actually think it's the opposite, we have 3 bonafide weapons...

    Bell, Brown and Heath...

How about focusing our efforts on getting these 3 the ball and let the "others" play their respective roles?

We try to be everything instead of simplifying and installing an identity...

Oh wait, we have Archer, Heyward-Bey, Blount, Wheaton.. We need to use them all...

Hell no, use the best 3 and let the other's step up when it's required...

Red zone needs some more leg churning for sure, but between J brown Heath and Matt, you have height o plenty. But we seem to not use it? Get used to it folks Bryant ain't gonna see much time. That's just how it is. We had Moye and regardless of his lack of upside or his this and that's etc... Had the required height but never got the required snaps.

I like Haley but loathe him at the same time. We have tools that aren't properly/cleverly utilized consistently.

When you are running against a team, it matters not where they are ranked against the pass... You simply do what's working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No brainer!

now that was between the 20s and never given a heavy dose between 2 backs that can handle and semi split the load.

this offense could blow people's minds, but no matter how much we add to it, we settle into the same O'l same.

Get friggin creative already, and lean some more on the old tried and true of pounding it out!

Once we get in the redzone it should be two backs ,run, run and run.No passing till we finally establish our dominance in the zone. Worst case, we STAY in field goal range. If it takes sitting Ben till he gets with the program no loss .Both back-up qbs are better at hand-offs(Ben has no moves and actually telegraphs the play) amybe it will drill home to BEN IT IS NOT ABOUT HIS STATS OR HIS PLAYING HERO BUT ITS ABOUT WINNING!

I agree that running the ball will probably improve our red zone offense.... But benching Ben? Come on pastor, that's a joke. He's never been the guy that complains about his stats, or pads his stats. We're not gonna bench a 10 year vet that's won multiple Super Bowls just to prove a point. I think you are aiming your frustrations about the play calling at the wrong guy.
