While I concur that that specific run play did work some throughout the game and this season, I am over the run play from shotgun formation at this point. Our line is not consistent enough and it was stopped a handful of times that game, as well. Execution counts yes and tremendously so... But when you're 50/50 on executing that play I'd go a different route lest we stay dare I say it, PREDICTABLE?

Out of the entire 2014 Steelers coaching staff from the top down to the bottom, Haley is really the only coach that I have confidence in. His playbook is excellent but the execution and dicipline of the unit is piss poor. Especially the Oline.

Thats a bit of over simplification dont you think Elvis? You line up and try and beat the guy across from you, are you suggesting that with proper coaching they'd never lose those battles? Come on, that play worked several times during the course of the game, unfortunately they were beaten that time.

The play has a good success rate. It was a run pass option, with the way the defense lined up, the best option was to run it. The other guys did a better job then ours.

As I've said elsewhere, Haley equates to about 5% of the total problem, if that. The talent is there, the discipline is not. DISCIPLINE, or lack-thereof, is the problem!

They did do a better job and I agree with you... Just stating the obvious that it equally has a failure rate game in and out. I realize 3 yd losses or mired by a couple of big gains. Is what it is, I got tired of the shotgun/delay hand off years ago and especially on a meaningful 3rd down. That *****ing existed long before the net hahahaha

The talent is there on offense not on defense, they might need to score 30 points a game to win the defense can't even stop average teams.

Agreed. But even with all that offensive talent they are not getting it done. Ben, Bell, Heath, AB, Wheaton and a slightly improved O-Line. They should be hitting about 35 pts/game. They are lackluster, though. AB should have had 2 more TDs (missed flea-flicker and overthrow by Ben).

I find it hard to believe they're getting these plays wrong in practice...

I was wondering the same thing about the other side. Apparently you feel that with proper coaching, a player will never lose his one on one battles. Nice fantasy. Believe it or not, players are responsible for executing, shocking, I know.

Thats what coaching and practice is for, to improve on execution. Last time I looked coaches run the practices. Coach them up, have them prepared, have them EXECUTING at a high level.

So once again, proper execution means never losing your one on one battles? Ever? Surely hope you don't really believe that. They ran that play several times during the game, which produced 3 good gains, unfortunately they couldn't pull it off the last time.

I'm being a smart ass because I'm getting tired of your passive aggressive comments in your posts directed at everyone who doesn't happen to agree with your point of view. If you don't like it, don't dish it out.

    Thats a fact.

I can see both points here too. gilbert for instance. this is year 4 for him and we are seeing the same things over and over. while possibly improving slightly in some area's we are still having the same bad play in others that has been going on way to often. (I'm not focusing on him alone but as an example.)

same with the penalties. same with ben being careless with the ball when being sacked. same with no turnovers. some or most of these things can be coached, but we seem to keep doing or not doing the same things that kill us during games. that's where MT comes in. it's his job to make sure we are practicing and beating into the players heads these things. fixing the same problems that keep happening year in and year out. it has to be coached to become second nature to these players.

Would that not fall on the line coach? Whom Gilbert has had several of since he's been here? (That part however definitely falls on MT, bringing in the right coaches.) But lets just say for arguments sake that Gilbert never gets any better, now you are getting into a different argument which would be the ability to evaluate talent in the draft. As far as execution goes though, there are a lot of young new faces on this team that are still learning. Even guys at the top of their game will not execute 100% of the time.

Players lose battles and make mistakes. All players have bad plays. If they cut or benched players simply because of the bad plays, well there wouldn't be a team to play on Sundays.

The Steelers had a few bad games in regard to penalties. There were seasons where the team was among the least penalized teams in the league.

I am trying to determine what problems continue to happen year in and year out?? I guess it's a matter of one's focus and perspective. Sometimes it's subjective.

Ben's fumbled the ball every year he's been in the league. Is that a sign of a reoccurring issue? I don't think so. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad with Ben or any player. NFL players are difficult to replace.

What people often characterize as the same problems year in and year out isn't always the case. It's a given that some issues will happen throughout the course of a season. Some issues might happen in one game and not show up in another game, ie special team breakdowns, penalties, turnovers or something else.

So you believe the coaches are not coaching these players? The players are professionals. They are not children. The common sense thing to believe here is that the players are coached and know what they should or shouldn't be doing out on the football field.

as far as ben not tucking the ball away when being sacked has always been a problem for him. that can be coached. gilbert allowing himself to be pushed back into ben can be coached, weather in the offseason or during the season. nobody said cut a guy that makes a mistake, but you also have to think about doing that to players that continually affect your team by doing the same mistake over and over for years. if not your team will never improve. one player is not bigger than the team.

of course every player has a bad game or a bad play, but when it happens week after week perceived or not it's a problem and MT is the head coach that has to be accountable for these mistakes weather they are by coaches or players. it's his team and why he gets the big bucks.

garvin with his blocks in the back on punts and kickoffs are a problem that can be coached, but he keeps doing it. our defense creating turnovers mostly fumbles can be coached. foster coming in over weight and slowing down what the unit wants to do as a whole can be coached. celebration penalties, taunting, yelling at officials can be coached. things that can be fixed should be fixed and then you can decide on individual players tenure.

deciding that some players that continually hurt your football team should get long term contacts is insanity. do MT and Colbert even discuss players that should stay or go? I would like to think yes but I'm not sure sometimes. we have seen this fail often on the O-line no matter who is coaching them. from starks, colon, gilbert, adams with no viable plan in the wings. it's tough to watch year in and year out.

someone has to be accountable coach and player wise or we will continue to see the same mediocrity as we have had for 3 years running so far. 8-8, 8-8, 2-2 in the last 3 years. are we improving and are we seeing anything change? who is responsible if not the coaches and players? KC, MT, Co-O's, position coaches, players, chit runs down hill.

the thinking that this is good enough is not what we are used to here. as we see it over and over, something has to give. what will our young players see if gilberts play is the standard and he gets a new contract? will this make them strive for better? the standard is pretty low right now. that has to change. the little things under coaches control have to change. details in play have to change. being in the proper shape coming into camp has to change. if not by the coaches than who?

I liken this to the Sanders effect. He dropped 3 passes last year but you'd think he had 25 from reading the board. Same thing with these "recurring" problems.

Steelers are fifth in total offense. If this continues it would be the best offense during Ben's career and 24.2 ppg is solid.

It isn't Haley's fault his HC handcuffs the offense by demanding he be ultra conservative. Haley was one of the coaches in the NFL most willing to gamble (went for more 4th down conversions than anyone). Tomlin would rather have Suisham try a fifty harder everyone at home knows is out of his range than try to convert a 4th and 2.

Total offense means very little without the point production. The Steelers are around 15th in the league in ppg. The offense will probably need to score more points if this team is to make the playoffs.

Let me see if I understand this. Our last oc was much maligned in large part because of his lack of a running game and too many deep passes. Now we have Haley who lives and dies largely by the 6" pass and 3rd and a mile draws, but Tomlin has handcuffed him.

And what freaking good is it to convert 4th and 2 with 4 seconds to play? THE SMART PLAY WAS TO GO FOR THE POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Tomlin did actually call the play that pretty much gave TB the ball back last week. I wonder how many plays he does call after hearing about that. I would like to know what Haley had planned to call before Tomlin overruled him? They should have called that play action to Heath that pretty much sealed the deal today. That was a great play. I think that Pouncey fumble also screwed up the plan last week as well.
