The Steelers had not lost at home to a winless opponent (of 0-3 or worse) since 1985. That happened vs. Cincinnati.

It nearly happened in 1997, when the Steelers eeked out a win vs the 0-5 Colts.

That was a dark day. Wins were few and far between in general during the Malone years.

Instead of the preferred "warm fuzzy" feeling this gives me a "need to take a shower and day drink" feeling.

We are reincarnating into the 80's Steelers, except without block numbers

Bringing back block numbers is the first step on our way to recovery. Make it so, Tomlin!

And the next week we lost a game in Florida making our record 2-3 ... and we finished the season 7-9. Lets hope history doesn't repeat itself.

sad thing is not even that can save us from this sorry comparison. I became a Steelers fan in 1992 but was not old enough to have a concept of the 80's teams but I can imagine that the defenses fielded in the 80's were not as bad as 2014. You can blame "the changes" to the game all you like but it's managements fault for not adapting to what is a "good defense" for todays game.

The 80s weren't as bad as some would think. It's just that compared to the 70s and 90s, it was a down decade. The team made the post-season in four of those ten seasons, made an AFCCG, and only suffered three losing seasons (85, 86, and 88).

In the early part of the decade, the older vets (like Greene, Greenwood, Blount, and Harris) were slowing considerably. Injuries were taking a toll, too. They rebounded somewhat in 1982, made the playoffs, with a team in transition. As Bradshaw retired, Stoudt and Malone still managed to take that rebuilt team to division titles--the 1984 team made the AFCCG and was the only team to defeat the 49ers that season. The 1985 team, to me, was the one that seriously disappointed. I think everyone expected them to build off '84, and in week one, it looked like they'd done that. Malone had a monster game. But after that, they sputtered. They had a bad '86, an uneven '87 (with replacements playing three games*), and a disastrous '88.

We all know how 1989 went. Talk about turning something around.

That's my quick history lesson for the day.

*Steve Bono was the scab (er, "replacement") QB in '87.

that was kind of my point...i'd take those teams then over our pathetic 2014 group any day of the week. I thought of those teams as a tougher mentality despite shortcomings

If only we had Marino in the eighties!! We'd probably have two or three more super bowls.
