I know we like to play a bend but don't break D from the 3-4 but it simply wont work . As the field gets shorter we should be able to guard Teams better this is simply not happening ....After watching some old tape from Teams that I coached with weak DB play I found the most effective playbook to cover it up ..

We have no choice but go to a 4 or 5 man front with a Cover 2 or Cover 3 Behind it .This means we must take some LB'S off the field and insert more coverage type guys.. Basically get in a base 4-2 with the 3rd. LB being a Safety type. Slide a LB out on a TE . Invert the Safeties get bigger guys up in press and get our faster guys at the Safety spots...

What this would do is put Mitchell and Troy at or near the LOS and put Gay and the 3rd. Safety Thomas back in cover 2 or cover 3 ..DL experimented with it some ,but never inverted the Safety spot or added a extra DL to help add pressure..

The cover 3 would allow our weaker DB'S to man up and take away quick hitters this should afford our DL a little more time to get to the QB ,plus the added guy would work well for stunts up front..

This is a basic approach not to complicated and not a lot of thought needed ,,we can't fool other QB'S into mistakes and we lack the talent to simply take the ball from a WR 1 on 1 . The DL are no beast either , this is the best solution to just let our guys play faster and give each unit a little more help...

In the Dallas game last night, they had Brees at like third and 18. rod marinelli put three on the line and the rest at the first down line. Brees had no clue where to throw and Dallas shut then down. That's how you adjust. We don't do stuff like this.

Exactly! How TB completes a 2nd and 22 (ok they only got 20 of it but you know what I mean) at such a crucial point in the game is just mind boggling.

And the sad thing is, I didn't have a single doubt that they would.

Will Allen and Shamarko are still on the team right? I remember them, in particular Allen, being pretty decent when they played last year. I would like to see more of them.

I almost agree here, if we are not going to get pass rush by sending 6, might as well only send 2-3 and drop more back into coverage. It should only help.

I thought you said our guys couldn't run, jump or catch or cover anybody. You said Lebeau doesn't play them up because they get torched in practice. So now you are saying there are ways to scheme around our deficiencies at CB. So now whose fault is it. Don't mean to sound harsh but which is it?

Not harsh at all ....A very valid and reasonable question . And both statements are true so being we can't get guys who can run jump and catch it's up to the Coach to think outside the box he has made very successful to make this group of guys play to their highest level ...

I don't really blame the Coach as his way is great his methods are great and he wants to believe in his players ability to step up and run the scheme.....All I am saying is its time for him to step back and take another look...

Mark Madden is a blowhard but he sometimes makes sense.

"The Steelers drafted linebacker Ryan Shazier in the first round. Shazier, currently injured, may yet be very good."

"But it’s another example of the Steelers trying to impose their outdated version of football on an ever-evolving game. Linebackers are important. Cornerbacks aren’t.
Well, except when a waiver-wire wonder is running by one of your corners to win the game in the last minute."

Thanks for taking it well, sometimes things come across a little rough on the Internet. I like your idea ,in fact I like any idea that's different from what we've been doing. Where I disagree is that his way is great and his methods are great, maybe they used to be but we've been seeing this defense get abused for a few years now.Our secondary has been a problem for quite a while. What is taking so long to at least try and do something about it scheme wise. I can't help but think there is a big issue when players and ex-players have made comments about our predictability . Not only is our secondary weak but our front seven hardly ever generates consistent pressure. Something has to change or something's gotta give.
