The team had its share of good defensive players such as Greg Lloyd, Hardy Nickerson, Rod Woodson, Thomas Everett and Dwayne Woodruff but the D-line was awful and the offense didn't help matters with turnovers and lack of scoring. The result was the defense giving up 421 points and a 5-11 season. That was also the year that Bubby Brister made his, "We should just punt on 1st down and get it over with" comment to the press. Imagine of Ben said something like that now.

 

Sad and I don't think 5 first round draft pics would help. Developing the talent has been weak. So many problems.

 

So true. All the draft picks in the world are useless if the GM can't draft the right players and the coach can't develop them or coach them up.

The thing is, Colbert used to do well in the draft, only since Tomlin came to town has that changed.

 

No comment other than I predicted another 8-8 and right now that's being optimistic.

I think we wish the defense and offense were independent of one another but more often then not we get poor play from both

 

To be fair, Brister said that in the context of Tom Moore's offense being too complicated, not just due to poor play. However, based on the first 2 games, it does kind of feel like one of those 80s seasons. I just hope they turn it around. They've come back from worse than this before.

 

I remember that team, and this team is better than that one.Merriweather's holdout killed that defense that year. Our offense is much better than that one.
Last year did remind me a lot of 1986, I will say...

 

I agree. We had a far less explosive offense. The potential wasn't there, and there weren't as many playmakers.

Chuck Noll was coming to the end of a long and illustrious coaching career and quite honestly had lost some effectiveness and enthusiasm when it came to coaching. He had Bubby Brister as his QB. Tomlin has Ben Roethlisberger.
