The NFL has just announced that an independent investigation will be conducted by former FBI chief Robert Mueller. Our own Art Rooney and Giants owner John Mara will oversee the investigation, and the report will be made public.

So the NFL initiated this? Either they truly didn't see this video or they know there's no proof they watched it.

It's a CYA attempt. And someone (or several) will burn in the fallout anyway.

Oh I love this! How fitting would it be for Mr. Rooney to topple the empire?! They made us the poster children for "dirty" play but now maybe we can REALLY get dirty with the emperor! May the Force Be With You Mr. Rooney!

They don't really have a lot of choices at this point. They've painted themselves into a corner in the court of public opinion. One could criticize this independent investigation as not being all that independent since it's overseen by two NFL team owners, one of whom publicly backed Goodell on this matter recently. Mueller has no legal authority to subpoena anyone or seize evidence etc, so I wouldn't set my expectations very high here.

Also, Mueller works for WilmerHale. The law firm that has represented the NFL in its Sunday Ticket deal with DirecTV.

Got to agree with you here. The owners do not want to get rid of Goodell over this. He's made them all money and has been key to growing the sport outside the USA (Whether we want to admit it or not) He's central in all the further talks about teams outside the USA and other ongoing deals.

I see them slapping a wrist of a few executives and concluding that missteps were made, but not enough to warrant the Commissioner getting relieved....

You think the Rooney's like him? I would REALLY like to know the answer to that question.

How did they pick which two owners would oversee the investigation? And was Rooney selected because we were the one team who opposed the new CBA?

Sounds about right. This whole time I was thinking that the NFL obviously realized there was no proof that could be uncovered in this investigation, and now I realize that it's not even a real investigation, it's a sham.

    Dang it.

    The fix is in.

Might as well have Rooney Mara oversee this thing.

While I don't think the Rooneys personally like him, that may have no bearing on what they see as a financial stability.

I would say they don't like him but ya know we all keep saying how Goodell makes a lot of money for owners. But wouldn't ANY commish these days? I mean the NFL is insanely popular and how many people would say "well I'm not supporting this league anymore because they got rid of Goodell". I would guess that most people don't even know who the guy is. They know players and only watch it on tv once a week or so and couldn't care less about the "business" side of things. That's more for guys like us. I'm not saying I think the league is gonna get rid of him. I'm just saying if I were an owner I wouldn't feel like I was gonna take too much of a hit by getting rid of Goodell. Get rid of peyton? Yeah you're gonna take a hit. Get rid of Goodell? Probably not. People tune in for players and not owners, players association reps, commissioners, or anyone else. It is ultimately a player driven league.

They aren't worried about the people. They worry more about the high level deals that hinge on relationships. It's like pulling an ambassador as he's negotiating something with his host nation at that level. Of course if Goodell takes a bigger beating from the result of this "investigation", it may prove to be enough that those "partners" want him gone before they move forward with any plans.

I guarantee you if people even took so much as a weekend and boycotted the league for keeping Goodell IF he knew about this you can bet they'd drop him like a bad habit. That would be so awesome.

Oh I'm not arguing with you on that point. I'm just saying there's got to be a reason they've been keeping him.

Problem is I don't think a boycott would even happen. What would they do if ratings dropped below a daytime talk show....lol!

Yeah there's no way a boycott could happen. I mean I'm sure some feminazi group is gonna protest but we are as addicted to football as a junkie is to their drug of choice. I mean we are called "junkies" for a reason. Can you even IMAGINE try to sit out a weekend of watching the Steelers? In principle, it would be the absolute right thing to do but I just don't think people could even give up the game for just one single Sunday. The league knows that and that's why they can pretty much do what they want to. I mean even if football fans WANT Goodell gone until it becomes a "bottom line" issue he will be there. If they REALLY wanted to show that they are ACTUALLY against domestic abuse the would say "you know what? goodell was wrong in his soft response to this and we are gonna hold him accountable for this even if it costs us." but you can bet they aren't gonna do that. IF it comes out that he DID know they very well might oust him. Oh what a day that would be.

At the very LEAST, any shred of credibility Goodell had is gone.

Once a leader becomes a punchline, he loses respect and control of his organization. I don't see him lasting much longer whether they fire him for this or not. He has been exposed as a liar, a manipulator, and a fraud.

Vince McMahon couldn't get this kind of heat when he turned heel as Commissioner of the WWE. And he hit people with chairs!

Under these circumstances I smell some more manipulation just to polish the image again.
A new commish would have nothing to lose and could present real results of such an investigation. Now there might be only one outcome: NFL is perfectly fine and the Ray Rice incident was just an individual case.
This is how politics work guys :frustrated:

Well he got quite a bit of heat from Bret Hart! LOL! Bret said "his face accidentally ran in to my fist". HA! I hope you're right that his days are numbered though.

Fun fact: Ravens president Dick Cass spent 30 years with WilmerHale before joining the Ravens in 2004.
